Installing the printer on a wireless network Wireless network ompatiility Your printer ontains an IEEE 802.11g wireless print server. Your printer is ompatile with IEEE 802.11 /g/n routers that are Wi-Fi ertified. If you are having issues with an n router, verify with your router manufaturer that the urrent mode setting is ompatile with g devies, as this setting varies depending on the router rand/model. Information you will need to set up the printer on a wireless network To set up the printer for wireless printing, you need to know: The name of your wireless network. This is also known as the Servie Set Identifier (SSID). If enryption was used to seure your network. The seurity key (either a WEP key or WPA passphrase) that allows other devies to ommuniate on the network if enryption was used to seure your network. If your wireless aess point (wireless router) is using Wired Equivalent Privay (WEP) seurity, the WEP key should e: Exatly 10 or 26 hexadeimal haraters. Hexadeimal haraters are A F, a f, and 0 9. or Exatly 5 or 13 ASCII haraters. ASCII haraters are letters, numers, puntuation, and symols found on a keyoard. If your wireless aess point (wireless router) is using Wi-Fi Proteted Aess (WPA) seurity, the WPA passphrase should e: From 8 to 63 ASCII haraters. ASCII haraters in a WPA passphrase are ase-sensitive. or Exatly 64 hexadeimal haraters. Hexadeimal haraters are A-F, a-f, and 0-9. If your wireless network is not using seurity, then you will not have a seurity key. Using a wireless network with no seurity is not reommended eause it an allow intruders to use your network resoures without your onsent. Note: Make sure you opy down the seurity key and SSID exatly, inluding any apital letters, and store it in a safe plae for future referene. Use the tale provided elow to write down this information. Bypassing seurity warnings during software installation Third-party appliations, inluding antivirus, seurity, and firewall programs may alert you aout the printer software eing installed. For your printer to work properly, allow the printer software to e installed on your omputer. Installing the printer on a wireless network Before you install the printer on a wireless network, make sure that: You have ompleted the initial setup of the printer. Your wireless network is set up and working properly. The omputer you are using is onneted to the same wireless network where you want to set up the printer. Using Windows 1 Insert the installation software CD. 2 Wait a minute for the Welome sreen to appear. If the Welome sreen does not appear after a minute, do one of the following: In Windows Vista a Clik. In the Start Searh ox, type D:\setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD or DVD drive. In Windows XP and earlier a Clik Start. Clik Run. Type D:\setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD or DVD drive. 3 Follow the instrutions on the Welome sreen to set up the printer. Using Maintosh 1 Insert the installation software CD. 2 Wait a minute for the Welome sreen to appear. Note: If the Welome sreen does not appear after a minute, lik the CD ion on the desktop. Note: If you do not know the SSID of the network that your omputer is onneted to, launh the wireless utility of the omputer network adapter and look for the network name. If you annot find the SSID or the seurity information for your network, see the doumentation that ame with the wireless aess point (wireless router), or ontat your system support person. 4

Wireless installation instrutions (Frane only) The following instrutions apply to ustomers using a LiveBox, AlieBox, N9UF Box, FreeBox, or Clu Internet. 1 Make sure your ox is wireless-enaled and ativated to work on a wireless network. For more information aout onfiguring the ox to work wirelessly, see the doumentation that ame with your ox. 2 Before installing the printer, make sure your ox is turned on and that your omputer is on and onneted to your wireless network. 3 Set up your printer using the setup instrutions provided. 4 If there is an assoiate/registration utton on the ak of your ox, press it when you are prompted to hoose a network. Note: After pressing the assoiate/register utton, you have five minutes to omplete the printer installation. 5 Return to the omputer sreen, and hoose the network you want to onnet to. If you want to use the network shown, hoose Connet to <network name>, and then lik Continue. If you do not want to use the network shown: a Choose Connet to another network, and then lik Continue. Choose the network you want to use from the list of availale networks, and then lik Continue. 6 Enter the Network key, and then lik Continue. Note: Your WEP, WPA, or WPA2 key may e otained from the ottom of the ox, the user s guide that ame with the ox, or from the ox We page. If you have already hanged the key for your wireless network, use the key you reated. 7 Follow the instrutions on your sreen to omplete installation. Interpreting the olors of the Wi-Fi indiator light The Wi-Fi indiator light helps you determine the network status of the printer. The following desries what the olors of the Wi-Fi indiator light mean. Off may indiate that the printer is off, the printer is in the initial power-up state, the internal print server is not installed, or the internal print server is not properly onneted. The light should e in this state: When the printer is turned off When the printer is in power saver mode When the printer does not have an internal print server installed and you want to onnet the printer to the omputer using a USB ale Orange may indiate that the printer is eing onfigured for use on the wireless network, the internal print server is not onfigured in infrastruture mode, or the internal print server is waiting to e onfigured for ad ho mode. The light should e in this state: When you want to use the printer without a omputer When you want to set up the printer on your wireless network When the printer is set up for an ad ho network and is roadasting its wireless network name (SSID) Blinking orange may indiate that: The printer is out of the range of the wireless aess point (wireless router). The printer is trying to ommuniate with the wireless aess point (wireless router), ut the wireless aess point (wireless router) may e turned off or not working properly. The printer is trying to estalish ommuniation with the wireless aess point (wireless router). This is true if you have already onfigured the printer for use on your wireless network. When the printer has een onfigured, any time you turn the printer off and then turn it ak on, the internal print server in the printer will try to onnet to your wireless aess point (wireless router). The wireless settings of the printer may no longer e valid. Green indiates that the printer is onneted to a wireless network. The light should e in this state when you want to start using the printer that is already set up on your wireless network. Blinking green indiates that the printer internal print server is eing updated. Configuring an IP address manually The printer will e assigned an IP address automatially through DHCP on most wireless networks. During wireless setup, you will e asked to manually assign an IP address to the printer in the following situations: You manually assigned IP addresses for the other network devies. You want to assign a speifi IP address. You moved the printer to a remote sunet. For more information, ontat your system support person. Changing wireless settings after installation To hange wireless settings on the printer, suh as the onfigured network, the seurity key, or other settings: Using Windows 1 Do one of the following: In Windows Vista, lik. In Windows XP, lik Start. 2 Clik Programs or All Programs, and then selet the printer program folder from the list. 5

3 Clik Tools Lexmark Wireless Setup Utility. Note: If the ale is not already onneted, you may e prompted to onnet the printer to the omputer again using the installation ale as part of the setup proess. 4 Follow the prompts on the omputer sreen to reinstall the software, and then make the hanges that you want. Using Maintosh 1 From the Finder desktop, doule-lik the printer folder. 2 Doule-lik Lexmark Wireless Setup Assistant. 3 Follow the instrutions on the omputer sreen. Installing the printer on other omputers One the printer is onfigured, it an e aessed wirelessly y any other omputer on the network. However, you will need to install the printer driver on every omputer that will aess it. You do not need to onfigure the printer again, although you will need to run the wireless setup on eah omputer to install the driver. Advaned wireless setup Creating an ad ho wireless network The reommended way to set up your wireless network is to use a wireless aess point (wireless router). A network set up this way is alled an infrastruture network. If you have an infrastruture network in your home, you should onfigure your printer for use on that network. If you do not have a wireless aess point or would like to set up a standalone network etween your printer and a omputer with a wireless network adapter, you an set up an ad ho network. In Windows Vista 1 Clik. 2 Clik Control Panel. 3 Clik Network and Internet. 4 Under Network and Sharing Center, lik Connet to a Network. 5 In the Connet to a Network dialog, lik Set up a wireless ad-ho (omputer-to-omputer) network, and then lik Next. 6 Follow the instrutions in the Set up a wireless ad ho network wizard. As part of the setup: a d Create a network name or SSID for the network etween the omputer and your printer. Write the name of your network in the spae provided so you an refer to it when running the wireless setup. Make sure you opy the exat spelling and apitalization. SSID (name of your wireless network) Go to the Seurity Type drop-down list, hoose WEP, and then reate a seurity key (or password). WEP keys must e: Exatly 10 or 26 hexadeimal haraters. Hexadeimal haraters are A F, a f, and 0 9. or Exatly 5 or 13 ASCII haraters. ASCII haraters are letters, numers, puntuation, and symols found on a keyoard. Note: Seurity is optional for ad ho networks. The range of an ad ho network is muh less than the range of an infrastruture network, making it less likely that intruders will onnet to it without your knowledge. Write the password for your network in the spae provided so you an refer to it when running the wireless setup. Make sure you opy the exat spelling and apitalization. Seurity key (if network is seure) Windows Vista will enale the ad ho network for you. It will appear in the Connet to a network dialog under Availale networks, indiating that the omputer is onfigured for the ad ho network. 7 Close the Control Panel and any remaining windows. 6

8 If this is the first time you will e setting up the printer for use on a wireless network, insert the installation software CD, and then follow the instrutions on the Welome sreen. Otherwise: a Clik. Clik All Programs. Selet the printer program folder, and then lik Tools Lexmark Wireless Setup Utility. 9 When the availale networks are displayed, provide the network name and the seurity information you reated. The installer will onfigure the printer for use with your omputer. 10 Store a opy of your network name and seurity information in a safe plae for future referene. In Windows XP and earlier 1 Clik Start. 2 Clik Control Panel. 3 Clik Network and Internet Connetions. 4 Clik Network Connetions. 5 Right-lik the ion for your wireless network onnetion. 6 Clik Enale, if it appears in the pop-up menu. Note: If Enale does not appear, your wireless onnetion is already enaled. 7 Right-lik the Wireless Network Connetion ion. 8 Clik Properties. 9 Clik the Wireless Networks ta. Note: If the Wireless Networks ta does not appear, your omputer has third-party software that ontrols your wireless settings. You must use that software to set up the ad ho wireless network. For more information, see the doumentation for the third-party software to learn how to reate an ad ho network. 10 Selet the Use Windows to onfigure my wireless network settings hek ox. 11 Under Preferred Networks, delete any existing networks. a Selet the network to e removed. Clik Remove to delete the network from the list. 12 Clik Add to reate an ad ho network. 13 In the Network Name (SSID) ox, type the name you want to give your wireless network. 14 Write down the network name you hose so you an refer to it when running the wireless setup. Make sure you opy the exat spelling and apitalization. SSID (name of your wireless network) 15 If Network Authentiation appears in the list, selet Open. 16 In the Data enryption list, selet WEP. Note: Seurity is optional for ad ho networks. The range of an ad ho network is muh less than the range of an infrastruture network, making it less likely that intruders will onnet to it without your knowledge. 17 If neessary, lear the The key is provided for me automatially hek ox. 18 In the Network Key ox, type in a seurity key. 19 Write down the seurity key you hose so you an refer to it when running the wireless utility. Make sure you opy the exat spelling and apitalization. Seurity key (if network is seure) Note: For more information aout passwords (seurity keys), see Chek your seurity keys in the Wireless trouleshooting setion of the Trouleshooting hapter. 20 In the Confirm network key ox, type the same seurity key. 21 Selet This is a omputer-to-omputer (ad ho) network; wireless aess points are not used.. 22 Clik OK twie to lose the two open windows. 23 It may take a few minutes for your omputer to reognize the new settings. To hek on the status of your network: a Right-lik the Wireless Network Connetions ion. Selet View Availale Wireless Networks. If the network is listed ut the omputer is not onneted, selet the ad ho network and then lik Connet. If the network does not appear, wait a minute and then lik Refresh network list. 24 If this is the first time you will e setting up the printer for use on a wireless network, insert the installation software CD, and then follow the instrutions on the Welome sreen. Otherwise: a Clik Start. Clik All Programs or Programs. Selet the printer program folder from the list, and then lik Tools Lexmark Wireless Setup Utility. 25 When the availale networks are displayed, provide the network name and the seurity information you reated in steps 11-16. The utility will onfigure the printer for use with your omputer. 26 Store a opy of your network name and seurity information in a safe plae for future referene. Using Maintosh 1 Make sure the omputer is on. 2 From the menu ar, lik Go Appliations. 3 From the Appliations folder, doule-lik Internet Connet. 7

4 From the toolar, lik AirPort. 5 From the Network pop-up menu, lik Create Network. 6 Create a name for your ad ho network, and then lik OK. 7 Write down the network name you hose so you an refer to it when running the wireless utility. Make sure you opy the exat spelling and apitalization. SSID (name of your wireless network) 8 If this is the first time you will e setting up the printer for use on a wireless network, insert the installation software CD, doule-lik the installer ion for your printer on the Finder desktop, and then follow the instrutions on the Welome sreen. Otherwise, from the Finder desktop, doule-lik the printer folder, and then doule-lik Lexmark Wireless Setup Assistant. 9 When prompted, provide the network name and/or the seurity information you reated. The utility will onfigure the printer for use with your omputer. 10 Store a opy of your network name and seurity information in a safe plae for future referene. Adding a printer to an existing ad ho wireless network 1 Do one of the following: In Windows Vista, lik. In Windows XP and earlier, lik Start. 2 Clik All Programs or Programs, and then selet the printer program folder from the list. 3 Clik Lexmark Wireless Configuration Utility. 4 Follow the instrutions on the Welome sreen. Trouleshooting a printer on a wireless network Wireless trouleshooting heklist Before eginning to trouleshoot the wireless printer, verify the following: The power supply is onneted to the printer, and is on. Your SSID is orret. Print a network setup page to verify the SSID the printer is using. If you are not sure if your SSID is orret, run the wireless setup again. Your WEP key or WPA passphrase is orret (if your network is seure). Log into the wireless aess point (wireless router) and hek the seurity settings. A seurity key is like a password. All devies on the same wireless network using WEP, WPA, or WPA2 share the same seurity key. If you are not sure if your seurity information is orret, run the wireless setup again. The wireless network is working properly. Try aessing other omputers on your wireless network. If your network has Internet aess, try onneting to the Internet over a wireless onnetion. The printer is within the range of the wireless network. For most networks, the printer should e within 100 feet (30 meters) of the wireless aess point (wireless router). The printer is loated away from ostales that ould lok the wireless signal. Remove any large metal ojets etween the aess point and the printer. Make sure the printer and wireless aess point are not separated y poles, walls, or support olumns ontaining metal or onrete. The printer is loated away from other eletroni devies that may interfere with the wireless signal. Many devies an interfere with the wireless signal, inluding ay monitors, motors, ordless phones, seurity system ameras, other wireless networks, and some Bluetooth devies. The Wi-Fi indiator light is lit. The printer driver is installed on the omputer from whih you are performing a task. The orret printer port is seleted. The omputer and printer are oth onneted to the same wireless network. 8

Printing a network setup page 2 Attah the small, square onnetor to the printer. A network setup page lists the onfiguration settings of the printer, inluding the IP address and MAC address. This information is very helpful when trouleshooting the network onfiguration of the printer. For more information on printing a network setup page, refer to the User's Guide on the installation software CD. Wireless onfiguration does not ontinue after the USB ale is attahed Chek the USB ale If the onfiguration software does not allow you to ontinue onfiguring your printer wirelessly after you attah the USB ale, there may e a prolem with the ale. Try one or more of the following: Make sure that the USB ale is not damaged. If there is any visile damage to the USB ale, try using a new one. Attah the ale diretly to the omputer and the printer. Hus, swith oxes, and doking stations an sometimes interfere with the USB onnetion. Make sure the USB ale is orretly attahed. 1 Attah the large, retangular onnetor to any USB port on your omputer. USB ports may e on the front or the ak of the omputer, and may e horizontal or vertial. Cannot print over wireless network If you enountered prolems while installing, or if your printer does not appear in the printers folder or as a printer option when sending a print jo, you an try uninstalling and reinstalling the software. These are possile solutions. Try one or more of the following: MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER IS CONNECTED TO YOUR WIRELESS ACCESS POINT (WIRELESS ROUTER) See if you have aess to the Internet y opening your We rowser and aessing any site. If there are other omputers or resoures on your wireless network, hek to see if you an aess them from your omputer. MOVE THE COMPUTER AND/OR PRINTER CLOSER TO THE WIRELESS ROUTER Although the possile distane etween devies in 802.11 or 802.11g networks is 300 feet, the maximum range for optimal performane is generally 100 150 feet. MOVE YOUR ACCESS POINT TO MINIMIZE INTERFERENCE There may e temporary interferene from other devies suh as mirowave ovens or other applianes, ordless phones, ay monitors, and seurity system ameras. Make sure your aess point is not positioned too losely to these devies. 9

CHECK WHETHER THE PRINTER IS ON THE SAME WIRELESS NETWORK AS THE COMPUTER The SSID of the printer must math the SSID of the wireless network. Using Windows 1 Type the IP address of the wireless aess point (wireless router) in the We address field of your rowser. If you do not know the IP address of the wireless aess point: a Do one of the following: In Windows Vista 1 Clik. 2 Clik All Programs Aessories. 3 Clik Command Prompt. In Windows XP and earlier 1 Clik Start. 2 Clik All Programs or Programs Aessories Command Prompt. Type iponfig. Press Enter. The Default Gateway entry is typially the wireless aess point. The IP address appears as four sets of numers separated y periods, suh as 192.168.0.100. Your IP address might also start with the numers 10 or 169. This is determined y your operating system or wireless network software. 2 Type your user name and password for the wireless aess point (wireless router) when prompted. 3 Clik OK. 4 On the main page, lik Wireless or another seletion where settings are stored. The SSID appears. 5 Write down the SSID, seurity type, and the seurity keys if they are shown. CHECK YOUR ADVANCED SECURITY SETTINGS If you are using MAC address filtering to limit aess to your wireless network, you must add the printer MAC address to the list of addresses allowed to onnet to the wireless aess point (wireless router). If you set the wireless aess point (wireless router) to issue a limited numer of IP addresses, you must hange this so that the printer an e added. Note: If you do not know how to make these hanges, see the doumentation that ame with the wireless network, or ontat the person who set up your wireless network. Wi-Fi indiator light is not lit CHECK POWER Make sure the light is on. Wi-Fi indiator light is green ut the printer does not print (Windows only) If you have ompleted the onfiguration for wireless printing and all of the settings appear to e orret, ut the printer does not print, try one or more of the following: ALLOW THE WIRELESS INSTALLATION TO COMPLETE Do not attempt to print, remove the installation CD, or detah the installation ale until you see the Wireless Setup Suessful sreen. ENABLE THE PRINTER Confirm that the printer is enaled. 1 Do one of the following: In Windows Vista a Clik. Clik Control Panel. Under Hardware and Sound, lik Printer. In Windows XP a Clik Start. Clik Printers and Faxes. In Windows 2000 a Clik Start. Clik Settings Printers. 2 Right-lik the new printer. If you see Use Printer Online in the menu, selet it. 3 Close the Printers or Printers and Faxes window and try printing again. SELECT THE WIRELESS PRINTER If you have previously set up your printer as a loally attahed printer, you may need to selet the wireless printer to use the printer wirelessly. 1 Do one of the following: In Windows Vista a Clik. Clik Control Panel. Under Hardware and Sound, lik Printer. In Windows XP a Clik Start. Clik Printers and Faxes. In Windows 2000 a Clik Start. Clik Settings Printers. 2 Chek to see if you have a printer alled Copy 1 in your folder. If you do, right-lik the Copy 1 printer and lik Use Printer Online from the menu. 3 Close the Printers or Printers and Faxes window and try printing again. SELECT THE WIRELESS PORT If you have previously set up your printer as a loally attahed printer, you may need to selet the wireless printer to use the printer wirelessly. 1 Do one of the following: In Windows Vista a Clik. Clik Control Panel. Under Hardware and Sound, lik Printer. 11

In Windows XP a Clik Start. Clik Printers and Faxes. In Windows 2000 a Clik Start. Clik Settings Printers. 2 Right-lik the printer, and then selet Properties from the menu. 3 Clik the Ports ta. 4 Loate the seleted port. The seleted port has a hek in the Port olumn. 5 If the Desription olumn of the seleted port indiates that it is a USB port, sroll through the list and selet the port with Printer Port in the Desription olumn. 6 Clik OK, and then try to print again. This an our if the laptop hard drive has powered down. If you see this message, wait a few seonds and then try to print again. The laptop and printer require a few seonds to power up again and reattah to the wireless network. If you see this message again after you have waited long enough for the printer and the laptop to attah to the network, there may e a prolem with your wireless network. When setting up the printer on your wireless network, the printer will need to temporarily onnet to a omputer using the installation ale. The signal strength listed on the printer network setup page indiates how strongly a transmitted signal is eing reeived. Many fators an affet the signal strength. One fator is interferene from other wireless devies or other devies suh as mirowave ovens. Another fator is distane. The farther two wireless devies are from eah other, the more likely it is that the ommuniation signal will e weaker. The strength of the signal reeived y your omputer an also affet the onnetivity of the printer with the network during onfiguration. When you installed the wireless adapter in your omputer, the adapter software proaly plaed an ion in your system tray. Try doule-liking this ion, and it will tell you how strongly the omputer is reeiving the wireless signal from the network. To improve signal quality, remove soures of interferene and/or move wireless devies loser to the wireless aess point (wireless router). What is an SSID? A Servie Set Identifier (SSID) is the name that identifies a wireless network. All devies on the network must know the SSID of the wireless network or they will not e ale to ommuniate with eah other. Usually, the wireless network roadasts the SSID to allow wireless devies in the area to onnet to it. Sometimes, the SSID is not roadast for seurity reasons. An SSID an ontain up to 32 alphanumeri haraters. How do I find out what type of seurity my network is using? You must know the seurity key and seurity mode to properly set up the printer for use on the wireless network. How an I improve wireless signal strength? A ommon reason wireless printers fail to ommuniate over a network is poor wireless signal quality. If the signal is too weak, too distorted, or loked y an ojet, it annot arry information etween the aess point and the printer. To determine if the printer is reeiving a strong signal from the aess point, print a network setup page. The Quality field indiates the relative strength of the wireless signal the printer is reeiving. Drops in signal strength an e intermittent, however, and although the signal quality appears high, it may drop during ertain onditions. If you think signal strength is a prolem etween your aess point and the printer, try one or more of the following: Notes: For ad ho networks, adjust the omputer where the aess point is indiated.
