The number of tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers is rising steadily: some 21,000 people work at over 200 companies today. Increasingly, deeper value chains are a key feature of this development. The companies cover a wide spectrum of areas: they range from major original equipment manufacturers (OEM) such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW to global players in the supplier industry such as Gestamp Umformtechnik, ZF, MAGNA Intier and MAGNA Steyr, Goodyear Dunlop, Takata-Petri, Continental, Visteon, Knorr-Bremse, Pierburg and a great variety of strong medium-sized companies. A qualified, flexible and efficient workforce Automotive companies can rely on well-trained and motivated employees in Berlin-Brandenburg. The quality of skilled personnel is guaranteed by three years of professional technical training from the highly specialised automotive mechatronics engineer to the bodywork and vehicle construction engineer. The region s universities train the managers of the future on courses such as automotive engineering (Technische Universität Berlin and Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin) or industrial engineering (Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin). Berlin Partner for Business and Technology and the Brandenburg Economic Development Board (ZAB) support companies in recruiting and training new employees and in boosting their level of innovation with extensive service packages. The automotive sector as a mainstay of the Cluster Transport, Mobility and Logistics Within their Joint innovation strategy, Berlin and Brandenburg are the first German states to cooperate in the field of innovation policy. Here the German capital region is focussed on high-growth clusters. One of the most prominent is the Cluster Transport, Mobility and Logistics with its automotive sector. The economic and technology development boards in both states have set up a common cluster management system to support the development of the cluster. A team of experts links leading figures in business, science and the public authorities, in order to boost added value and the industry s competitive position on the international stage. www.mobility-bb.com Partnership with prospects Innovative and complex topics such as electromobility demand the support of technology and economic policies at various levels. Alongside the funding programmes offered by the region, the government and the EU, networks play a key role here. automotive BerlinBrandenburg e.v. (abb e.v.) cooperation network abb e.v. is a cross-state network of the automotive industry in Berlin and Brandenburg. Its work aims to boost international competitiveness, innovative potential and the cooperation between partner companies. The needs of small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) are given special attention. www.ac-bb.de Network for Innovative Vehicle Concepts (NIF) The network for Innovative Vehicle Concepts (NIF) provides a platform for the development and support of new projects which preferably intersect with traditional industries. It supports companies and research institutions in developing interdisciplinary R&D projects. The body responsible for the project is the Association of Innovative Vehicle Drive Systems Berlin-Brandenburg (INFABB e.v.). nif@infabb.de Berlin Agency for Electromobility emo The Berlin Agency for Electromobility is the one-stop agency for the topic of electromobility in the capital region. It pools the expertise of companies and institutions, develops and supports projects and coordinates strategy development in this field. As a public-private partnership, the emo is operated by Berlin Partner for Business and Technology. www.emo-berlin.de Electromobility in the capital region The development and realisation of innovative transport systems and with it answers to the great challenges presented by climate protection and resource conservation are key objectives of the Transport, Mobility and Logistics Cluster in Berlin- Brandenburg. The capital region is growing into a leading international metropolitan region for electromobility. It covers the entire value chain from research and development via production and testing to marketing and use. Training and qualification play a role at each of these stages. In 2012, Berlin and Brandenburg emerged successfully from the federal government s competition and was named one of the four German showcases of electromobility. The capital region s solution particularly swayed the selection panel with its integrated synergy of regenerative energy generation in Brandenburg and its use of new electromobility concepts in the metropolitan region. More than 30 closely related projects with a total volume of some 100 million euros will turn electromobility into reality in Berlin and Brandenburg by 2016 and effectively help the market to get up and running. Around 150 companies and institutions are involved with great dedication and they provide their own resources as part of the Berlin and Brandenburg showcase projects, which are supported by the federal government and the two states. The Berlin Agency for Electromobility emo is responsible for overall coordination. Electric cars in commercial fleets and car pooling solutions form part of the showcase portfolio just as much as urban logistics solutions with e-commercial vehicles and electric buses in public transport. The charging infrastructure in public spaces is also due to be considerably upgraded. The incorporation of e-vehicles in innovative smart grid concepts integrates energy and transport systems. The range of electromobility systems and components from the capital region will be expanded, with science institutions and research-related engineering contractors forming the foundation of industrial value creation in Berlin and Brandenburg. An active ICT sector provides key innovations in vehicle engineering and driver assistance systems as well as for controlling complex synergies of energy and transport systems. In developing modern hybrid drives and battery systems, stakeholders in Berlin and Brandenburg are already working with internationally recognised expertise. The integrated energy management of electric vehicles is a regional focus just as much as lightweight solutions that benefit from the experience of the aerospace industry and other industrial applications. In addition, recent years have seen the development of innovative vehicle concepts that have the potential to conquer the market.

The Berlin-Brandenburg Capital Region: local advantages, facts, services Where your investment makes sense Berlin-Brandenburg offers excellent customized funding programmes for businesses which are new to the region or excel in innovation. Investment incentives come in the form of direct subsidies. Funding programmes pool resources from the EU, the German federal government and the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. High quality of life Quadriga with Reichstag dome in the background The region offers the unique combination of Berlin s international metropolitan flair and Brandenburg s fascinating countryside and historical places of interest.
