Railway Research and Technology in China Today Lan Wang China Academy of Railway Sciences

1 INTRODUCTION The railway as the backbone of integrative traffic transportation system in China is main artery of the national economy In 2005, the operation mileage of Chinese railways reached 75438 km,, the number of passengers dispatched of the complete railway was 1.15 billion persons,, and the tonnage of freight dispatched was 2.68 billion tons. To 2010, the operation mileage of Chinese railways aim at 90000 km,, the number of passengers dispatched of the complete railway 1.5 billion persons,, and the tonnage of freight dispatched 3.5 billion tons.

The Eleventh Five-Year Plan of Chinese Railways In 2010, the length of national railways will reach 90000 km, and more than 45% are double-track and electrified lines.

2 MAIN RAILWAY RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY The main task of Chinese railways is to aim at the forward position ion of science and technology of the railway in the world. The main research fields include operation safety, train speed-up program, passenger dedicated railway lines, heavy haul and IT etc.

2.1 Speed-up Program for Passenger Train and Freight Wagon Since 1997 Chinese railways have accomplished five big speed-up programs Fifth Speed-up,in 2004 Fourth Speed-up,in 2001 Third Speed-up,in 2000 Second Speed-up,in 1998 First Speed-up,in 1997

The sixth speed-up program will begin in 2007 The overall mileage of the 160 km/h speed lines will reach 14000 km, and the mileage of the 200 km/h speed lines will reach 6003 km The speed of freight train will increase to 120 km/h Double-deck container trains will be operated in some lines

2.1 Speed-up Program for Passenger Train and Freight Wagon For years, the researches are carried on Speed-up line plan over the entire railway network Rational match between speed, density and weight of train on existing line Rolling stock and equipment Operation stability and comfort ability Testing

2.2 Operation Safety Technology Operation safety supervision system Class from ground to Train from train to train from train to ground from ground to ground Monitoring system Trackside monitoring system for the train operation Testing system for transportation of freight car Infrared axle temperature inspection system Alarming system for train passing the pavement in the railway station etc. Monitoring system for locomotive failure The monitoring and recording system for passenger train (the black box for passenger train) Monitoring and recording device for locomotive operation etc. The integrated safety inspection car Track geometry inspection car High-speed rail flaw detection car Track dynamic inspection device on the train Locomotive signal inspection recorder etc. Turnout status monitoring system The supervision system for the computer interlocking at station etc.

2.3 Information Technology Computer ticketing and reserving system The passenger ticket centers of three levels About 25 regions and about 1700 stations in the network An enormous ticketing and reserving system of automation over the whole Chinese railways Traffic dispatcher's control system To develop centralized traffic control (CTC) intensifying safety control and advancing traffic efficiency To built up the new generation of CTC system on each main busy line To construct the integrated dispatching management information system (DMIS) covering with 70 main lines of all the bureaus in China

Chinese Train Control System To research the Chinese train control system (CTCS) To use the experience of ETCS for reference To make the development layout and the systemic design about the whole CTCS Intelligent Railway Transportation System To research the systematic framework To develop the key technolohies To build up a demonstration and simulation engineering

2.4 Passenger Dedicated Railway Line Technology China is building passenger dedicated railway lines on the busy traffic channels, to realize distributed-line transportation for passenger and freight, and to form a fast-speed passenger transportation network. China plans to build about 7000 km passenger dedicated railway lines in 2010, and to structure a 20000 km fast passenger traffic network. The network will take Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Wuhan as the centers.

2.5 Heavy Haul Transport Technology The transport capacity of Datong-Qinghuangdao coal line is 250 Mt/year in 2006, and aims to reach 300 Mt/year in 2007 A coal traffic network with big transport capacity will be constructed

2.6 Special Technology on Qinghai-Tibet Railway Germu Xining A symbol engineering of the development of west China The distance from Xining to Lhasa is 1956 km long Lhasa An operation railway at the highest altitude in the world

2.6 Special Technology on Qinghai-Tibet Railway Solved the Altiplano problem Average temperature in a year is below 0 C The lowest temperature is -45 C

2.6 Special Technology on Qinghai-Tibet Railway Solved the frozen earth problem frozen earth

2.6 Special Technology on Qinghai-Tibet Railway Solved the environment protection problem Yangtze Source Tibetan Antelopes

3 COOPERATION PERSPECTIVE Strengthen the understanding of European research projects: Framework Program5, Framework Program6 Deep understanding of new progress and trends of railway technology in Europe, the United States, India and Russia

3 COOPERATION PERSPECTIVE Perform international cooperation in railway transportation, locomotive & rolling stock, communication and signal, track engineering, information technology, safety technology, standard system, etc.

3 COOPERATION PERSPECTIVE Especially in such areas: Heavy-haul technology (eg. Locotrol technology, Slack action technology, Wear-reduction technology, Simulation technology, etc.) Trackside safety monitor technology ERTMS system Passenger service information system Analysis and management of RAMS Railway standard system

3 COOPERATION PERSPECTIVE Establish long-term cooperation mechanism. Strengthen project team s cooperation and contact. Enhance information communication and exchange.
