I was a housekeeper, and I did some waitressing, and some office work as well. As a housekeeper, the work was quite hard and boring, but my colleagues were so friendly, and we only worked in the morning, so we could go to the beach in the afternoon, which was great. That s really cool. What about the other job? I waitressed in Byron Bay, and there were loads of tourists, so the tips were really, really good. But the work was quite hard, it was long hours. And office work was okay, it was just nine to five. 12

The past simple is the same for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they). 2 Choosing a Career Emily Tom What are you doing now? Are you going back to college? Emily I studied Accounting before I went to Australia, but I stopped. I want to go back to school in September, but I m not sure yet what I m going to do. Tom Why did you decide to break off your studies? Emily I thought accounting was really boring. I hate sitting at a desk all day. I prefer doing something more active. But I don t know yet what exactly. How about you? Tom I m working as a sales assistant at the moment. In September I m going back to college, to study Electrical Engineering. Emily Cool. Why did you choose that subject? Tom I like doing something technical. I also think that there are good career opportunities for electricians. When you decide what you want to study, you should keep that in mind too. Emily I don t care about having a great career. For me, the most important thing is that I enjoy my work. I want to find a job that suits me. Tom That s important too, I agree. But what if your studies are really interesting, but you can t find a job after leaving school? There s a lot of unemployment at the moment, and it s not always easy for young people to find a job. While I was there, I was working as a waitress, a housekeeper, and in an office. Before I went to Australia, I was studying Accounting, but I found that boring. And now I m not sure what I want to do. Hopefully I want to go into an active job, like working in the police force or in security. My hobbies are travelling and horse riding. 2 My Travels CHAPTER 1 Emily: During my working holiday in Australia, I had many wonderful experiences. My favourite experience was our boat trip to the Whitsunday Islands. We chose a 2 days 2 nights trip on a racing boat, which was brilliant. The beds were uncomfortable, so I didn t get much sleep, but the experience was worth it. We watched the sunset out at sea, visited Whitehaven Beach, saw sea turtles, and saw a family of dolphins, two adults and a baby, swimming in the lights of the boat at night. The highlight was diving the Great Barrier Reef. EXERCISE 4 How can you say the following sentences in English? Say them out loud. Twee maanden geleden ben ik op vakantie geweest naar Spanje. GRAMMAR: COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS Countable nouns are nouns you can count. You can make them plural. For example: one chair, two chairs. Uncountable nouns are words you can t count. You can t make them plural. For example: money. I s okay to say: I ve got some money. But you can t say: I ve got 2 moneys. EXERCISE 5 Which of these nouns are countable and which are uncountable? 3 Working in Australia CHAPTER 1 Emily: My first job in Australia was housekeeping in a hotel. I was really lucky and got this job through an advert on a hostel notice board. Although the work wasn t glamorous, I was working with great people and we had lots of fun. The best part was that the work was mainly in the mornings, so we had time to enjoy the beach in the afternoons! I also worked as an office worker for a while. It was easy to get an office job because I already had some experience and I studied Accounting before I came to Australia.
