Exercise 4 - Practice Creating Text Documents Using WordPad 1. Open and use WordPad by doing the following: A. Click on the Start button on the left side of the taskbar to open the Start window. B. Click on the WordPad icon in the left column of the Start window. C. A blank WordPad document appears where text can be entered. D. You can either start a new document or open a saved document. Note: For this exercise we will use a document already created in WordPad to practice using the editing, formatting, and other features found in WordPad. 2. To find the My Family History folder in the Documents library, click on the WordPad button, and then click on Open. The Open window appears. In the space to the right of the Navigation pane, double click on the My Family History folder, and then double click on the RFL_History.rtf file to open it. This document was created in WordPad. Note: If the document does not open in full screen, click on the Maximize button. A. Find the following: The title bar at the top with the title of the document and the name of the program. The Quick Access toolbar with the commands that are used frequently. Mouseover each icon to see what function it performs. The Word Pad button. Click on the button to see the drop-down menu. The Home tab on the Ribbon. Study the buttons and icons in the five groups. (If a menu item is black, it is usable. If a menu item is gray, it is not usable at this time.) The View tab on the Ribbon. Click on View and then study the buttons and icons in the three groups. Click on the Home tab on the ribbon. B. To create a new paragraph using the Enter key: 1. In the first paragraph, place the I-beam pointer at the beginning of the Among the State s... sentence, and then click to place the cursor there. 2. Press the Enter key twice. C. To indent a paragraph using the Tab key: While the blinking cursor is still at the beginning of the Among the State s... sentence, press the Tab key once. D. To delete one or more letters using the Backspace key: 1. Place the I-beam pointer to the right of F. in the title Richard F. Lambert, and then click to place the cursor there. 2. Press the Backspace key twice to delete the F. leaving the title as Richard Lambert. (There will be an extra space between the two words Richard Lambert. Leave it that way as it will be needed later in the exercise.) Page 1
E. To delete a word using the Delete key: 1. In the first line of the third paragraph, go to the fifth word which is son. 2. Place the I-beam pointer on top of the word son and double click to highlight it. 3. Press the Delete key to delete the word son. F. To delete more than one word or a line of text: 1. In the first line of the third paragraph, find the words in Salt Lake City, and highlight that text using the instructions below. a. Move the I-beam pointer to the left or right of the text you want to highlight. b. Press and hold down the mouse with the pointer finger. c. Drag the pointer over the text to highlight it. d. Release the pointer finger. 2. Press either the Backspace key or the Delete key to delete the text. G. To insert one or more words: 1. Move the I-beam pointer between the words Richard Lambert in the title and then click. 2. Type: Franklin The title will now read Richard Franklin Lambert. H. To add additional text to the document: 1. Place the I-beam pointer to the right of County in the third line of the title and then click. 2. Press the Enter key twice. 3. Type: Photo taken in 1905 3. Edit text using the Clipboard group in the Home tab to do the following: A. To cut text and undo the last action: 1. In the second line of the first paragraph, highlight the word endured. 2. Click on Cut in the Clipboard group. Notice that the word endured has been cut from the text. 3. To undo the last action, click on the Undo icon in the Quick Access toolbar. Notice that the word endured reappears in the text and is highlighted. 4. With the word endured highlighted, right click the mouse and click on Cut in the menu. Notice that the word endured has been cut from the text. 5. To undo the last action, click on the Undo icon in the Quick Access toolbar. Notice that the word endured reappears in the text. B. To cut and paste text: 1. In the first line of the first paragraph, highlight the word early. 2. Click on Cut in the Clipboard group. The word early is now on the Windows clipboard and is ready to paste in another location. Note: You can right click the mouse and click on Cut in the menu, OR do a keyboard shortcut: press Ctrl + X instead of doing Step 2 above. Page 2
3. In the first line of the first paragraph, place the I-beam pointer to the left of the word settlement and then click. 4. Click on the Paste icon in the Clipboard group. Note: You can right click the mouse and click on Paste in the menu, OR do a keyboard shortcut: press Ctrl + V instead of doing Step 4 above. 5. Press the spacebar once to create a space after early. C. To copy and paste text: 1. In the second paragraph, highlight the words Richard F. 2. Click on Copy in the Clipboard group. The words Richard F. are now on the Windows clipboard and ready to paste in another location. 3. Scroll to the last paragraph in the document. 4. Place the I-beam pointer after Mr. and then click. Press the spacebar once. 5. Click on the Paste icon in the Clipboard group to paste the words Richard F. Note: Instead of using the Copy and Paste in the Clipboard group, you can right click the mouse and click on Copy and Paste in the menu, OR do keyboard shortcuts for: Copy press Ctrl + C and for Paste press Ctrl + V D. To find text (words or characters) in the document: 1. EITHER click on Find in the Editing group, OR do a keyboard shortcut: press Ctrl + F 2. The Find window will appear. 3. In the Find what search field, type: large 4. Click on the Find Next button. The word large will be highlighted in the document. 5. Click on the Cancel button in the Find window. 6. Leave the word large highlighted. 4. Use the icons in the Font group and Paragraph group for Steps A, B and C below. A. With the word large highlighted, do the following and notice how the word changes each time: 1. Click on the arrow to the right of the Font family field. Find and highlight Arial in the drop-down menu, and then click on it. 2. Click on the arrow to the right of the Font size field. Find and highlight 20 in the drop-down menu, and then click on it. 3. Click on the Bold icon, then the Italic icon, and then the Underline icon. 4. Click on the arrow to the right of the Text color icon, mouseover Vibrant red, and then click on it. Click anywhere outside the highlighted word to remove the highlight and to see the color and underline. Page 3
B. The text setting in the Paragraph group is on Justify, where the text aligns with both the left and right margins in the entire document. To change the text alignment, do the following: 1. Scroll to the top of the document and highlight the first paragraph. (See Page 2, Step F1.) 2. Click on the Center icon. Notice how the highlighted text is centered between the margins. 3. Highlight the second paragraph. 4. Click on the Align text right icon to align the text to the right margin. Notice that the remainder of the document is still on Justify. 5. Click on Select all in the Editing group to highlight all the text in the document. 6. Click on the Justify icon. Scroll up to see that the entire document is now justified. 7. Highlight the title (the first four lines) of the document. 8. Click on the Center icon to center the title. C. Place the I-beam pointer to the right of the last sentence in the third paragraph,... November 25, 1893. Press the spacebar twice. 1. Type: John Lambert was a polygamist and had two wives whose names were: Notice how the text automatically wrapped to the next line. Press Enter. 2. Click on the Start a list icon to turn this function on. The icon is highlighted. Type: Adelia Press Enter. Type: Elva Press Enter. 3. Click on the Start a list icon to turn this function off. The icon is not highlighted. 4. Press Delete to delete the extra space between the two paragraphs. 5. Click on the WordPad button, and then mouseover Print. In the submenu click on Print preview. A. Click on 100% to enlarge the size of the document. B. Click on Next page to see the next page of the document. C. Explore the usable buttons in the different groups. (If a button is gray, it is not usable at this time.) D. Find the Print button in the Print group. E. Click on Close print preview to return to the document. 6. Click on the WordPad button and then either click on Print, OR mouseover Print and in the submenu click on Print. Study the different sections of the Print window. (The Print window at your home may be different than what is shown at the Training Center.) A. In the Select Printer box, the printer to be used will be highlighted. B. In the Page Range box you can select to print all the pages or part of them. C. In the Number of copies box you can choose how many copies of the document to print. D. To start the printer at home, you would click on the Print button. At the Training Center, click on the Cancel button. 7. Click on the WordPad button and click on Save as. A. A Save As window will open. B. Leave the address bar as Libraries > Documents > My Documents > My Family History. C. The File name will already be RFL_History.rtf. Page 4
D. Leave the Save as type setting as Rich Text Format (RTF). E. Click on the Save button to save the changes that have been made to this document. F. A Confirm Save As window will appear asking... Do you want to replace it? This will replace the original document with the added changes. Click on the Yes button. If time permits, do one or more of the following: 1. Continue to edit and format text in the document using the features found in the five groups in the Home tab. DO NOT make any changes to the title of the document (the first four lines), as they will be used in another exercise. 2. Explore more options in the Home tab. Click on the WordPad button and click on Page setup. In the Editing group, click on Replace. In the Insert group, click on Date and time. 3. Click on the icon in the toolbar to access the Window Help and Support window. Study the Using WordPad article. Use the Search Help field at the top to search for information on the following topics: cut text, copy text, paste text, or a topic of your choice. To end this lab session: 1. Close any open windows by clicking on the X in the upper right corner. Note: If a WordPad window appears asking if you would like to Save changes to RFL_History.rtf click on the Yes button. Page 5
