Message from the Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu India and Ghana are traditional allies and have warm and friendly relations whose foundation was laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, and the Ghana s first President, Dr. Nkrumah who enjoyed a close friendship. The two countries have signed a number of agreements for various collaborative programmes on education, trade, culture and scientific exchange, including setting up a Centre of Excellence for Training in Information Technology in Accra which has been operational since December 2003. These programmes are aimed to foster healthy people to people relationships which are being strengthened by the 6000-7000 Indian community, some of whom have been settled in Ghana since 1940. As a part of the Industry-Academia collaboration in education and training, the Children s Education Programme on Petroleum Geology, Global warming and Energy Efficiency: Climate and Environmental Concerns was launched in Jammu by the University of Jammu, eni india ltd and University College London in 2008 and subsequently organised at different places in India. Keeping in view its resounding success and popularity, eni Milan and the University of Jammu have decided to organise this programme at international level from 2010 onwards starting with Ghana. I am glad to see that this industry-academia collaboration has got recognition at an international level. I am thankful to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana who agreed to host this programme. I must also thank eni ghana e&p ltd who sponsored the programme. This collaborative academic activity in co-operation with the University of Ghana will further strengthen the existing relations between India and Ghana. I send my warm greetings to the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ghana, the eni management, particularly Giuseppe Moscato, Country Manager, eni ghana e&p ltd, and the participating children and wish the programme a grand success. Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and Environmental Concerns A Children s Education Programme Accra (Ghana), 15 th September 2010 Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and Environmental Concerns - a Children s Education Programme Accra, Ghana (West Africa), 15 th September 2010 Background History The University of Jammu, India hosted an International Conference on Geology and Hydrocarbon potential of Neoproterozoic- Cambrian basins in India, Pakistan and the Middle East in February 2008 in Jammu. This conference was organised jointly by the University of Jammu and MPRG, University College London and was co-sponsored by eni india ltd; EGI, University of Utah; ONGC, India; Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, J & K State Council for Science and Technology and the Department of Geology and Mining, J&K Government. During the course of discussions among the technical conveners of the conference, Dr. Bindra Thusu (one of the Conveners of the conference) tabled an idea of organising a workshop for the children of Jammu and Kashmir State on petroleum geology. The idea behind the workshop was to infuse interest among the students of grade 10 to 12 towards the geological sciences. The motto behind selecting this age group of students was, firstly, to motivate them to opt for geoscience as their career, so that the future industrial needs are taken care off. Secondly, they are the future of the nation and sensitising them is an investment to deal with Global warming and Climate Change perhaps the greatest challenge before the human race at the present times. The idea was appreciated by Dr. Jonathan Craig and Prof. G. M. Bhat and it was decided to organise the workshop on the sidelines of the conference on 19 th February 2008. The first edition of the workshop booklet and CD was presented to Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon ble Prime Minister of India at his residence in New Delhi on 16th February 2008. The organisers of the conference with the help of Director, Department of School Education of the state selected 150 students and 15 accompanying teachers from 75 High and Higher secondary schools from 14 districts of J&K State. The day-long workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, the then Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu. On this occasion a booklet on Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency was published and distributed among the participants. Interestingly, higher officials of the state Education Department including Commissioner/Secretary of Higher Education, Director of School Education, faculty members of the University and affiliated colleges, members of the state bureaucracy and members of the civil society 5
The presentation of the first edition of the booklet on Energy Efficiency Campaign and CD to Hon ble Prime Minsister of Inda, Dr. Manmohan Singh on 16th February 2008 at his residence: The delegation included Prof. Alan Smith (Cambridge University, Dr. Jonathan Craig (eni Milan), Dr. Bindra Thusu (MPRG, University College London), London) and Prof. G. (numbering about 100 including the children of the age group of 70 years!) also attended the workshop for the whole day. Dr. Jonathan Craig delivered a series of lectures on petroleum geology, global warming & climate change, and energy efficiency. The programme was well received by all who attended this workshop. Subsequently, the state government requested a repeat of the workshop for the children of Jammu and Kashmir in three regions separately. Keeping in view the popularity and resounding success of the workshop, the University of Jammu in co-operation with MPRG, University College London organised the workshop in Kargil and Leh (Ladakh) in July 2008 which was funded by eni india ltd under their corporate social responsibility charter. The response of the students and the teachers in Kargil and Leh was overwhelming. It was at the Leh workshop that the component of poster presentations on Global Climate Change and Energy Efficiency by the students was introduced and the workshop came to be known as eni Children s Education Programme : a modest beginning made at Jammu became a Mission in a very short period of 5 months. Subsequently two workshops were organised under the banner of the eni Children s Education Programme on the eve of the first exploration well by eni India in Rajasthan. The second edition of the booklet was published for distribution among the children in February 2009. These two workshops were organised in association with the Rajasthan State Education Department in Jodhpur in October 2008 and in Jaisalmer in February 2009. Later, in May 2009, the workshop was organised at S. P. College, Srinagar, Kashmir in which about 400 school children and teachers, and faculty members from S. P. College, civil servants and members of the civil society participated. These workshops became very popular among the students and their teachers throughout north India. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State, Mr. Omar Abdullah sent an appreciation letter of to the eni top management in Milan and requested to continue the programme in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere in India. The Governor of the J&K state, Mr. N. N. Vohra, appreciated the collaborative programme (funded by eni india ltd) between the University of Jammu and MPRG, University College London and wished the programme and the organising team a grand success in future. Based on the success of the Programme, Jammu University nominated Dr. Jonathan Craig for the prestigious Getenergy award (Mentor of the year Award ) and eni india ltd/milan for the Corporate Social Responsibility Award in 2009. Both the nominations were short listed by the panel of experts for global online voting. The success story of the Children s Education Programme was uploaded on the Getenergy website for open voting. Both Dr. Jonathan Craig and eni india ltd/milan won their respective award categories, with Jonathan winning by a record number of votes. 7
e&p division Subsequently, the University of Jammu was shortlisted for the Education Partnership Award for the Year 2009-10 by Getenergy Limited. The University of Jammu won this prestigious International Award for Children s Education Programme and Industry Academia interface in the energy education, research and Training with eni india ltd and University College London. The Award Ceremony was held on 23rd March 2010 in Kuala Lumpur. Following these achievements and global appreciation for the programme, eni Milan decided to organise the programme at global level and fund this programme in different countries at the world. In the first phase, Ghana, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Angola, Congo and Pakistan were shortlisted for 2010-2013. 19 & 22 July 2008, Children s Education Programme at Kargil and Leh (J&K, India) His Excellency, Governor of Jammu And Kashmir State and the Chancellor, University of Jammu Sh. N.N. Vohra addressing the Inaugural Session of the Workshop on Energy Resources of J&K State, 20th May 2009 In his inaugural address the Governor had words of praise for the Children s Education Programme which was conducted th on 19 of May 2009. The Governor in his address laid emphasis on three main points: 1) Efforts required to be made to bridge the gap between availability and requirement of energy. 2) The need for tapping non-conventional resources of energy like wind, solar, bio- and geo-thermal besides hydro power. 3) Generating clean energy in an efficient and cost-effective manner. 8

Mr. Jerry Greenfields welcomed the guests and participants of the workshop. Jerry deputised for Mr. Jerry Smart (the man behind planning for the workshop in Accra), Exploration Manager, eni ghana e&p ltd who couldn t attend himself because of an urgent overseas official assignment on the workshop day. We had two pre-workshop pre-review meetings with Mr. Smart and his colleagues in eni ghana e&p ltd office to make the arrangements for the workshop and postworkshop field trip. 10
Prof. G. M. Bhat briefly presented the history of the children s education programme and its journey from Jammu University to three regions of Jammu and Kashmir, two regions in Rajasthan (2008-2009) and then to Ghana (2010). On this occasion, Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu (who was scheduled to attend the inaugural session of the workshop but couldn t make it because of some excegency) sent his message which was read by Prof. Bhat. Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ghana inaugurated the workshop. In his address, Prof. Aryeetey appreciated the efforts of eni ghana e&p ltd and the University of Jammu for selecting Ghana for the international workshop on Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Climate Change. He advised the students and the accompanying teachers to take full advantage of the workshop and prepare themselves to take on the challenge of mitigating Global warming and climate change. He expressed his desire that eni organise more such programmes in other parts of the country in the near future. Highlighting the need for petroleum exploration and other energy resources for development of the country, Prof. Aryeetey laid emphasis on judicious use of the energy to combat climate and environmental concerns. On this occasion, Mr. A. Badoo, expressed his thankfulness to the Vice- Chancellor, University of Jammu and eni Management in Milan and Ghana for selecting Accra as the venue for the first international Children s Education Programme on Energy Efficiency. He described the programme as one of the most innovative and important for the school children to motivate them to take Geoscience as their career and contribute to the mitigation of the global warming and climate change. Mr. Badoo expressed his views on the India-Ghana relationship and hoped the existing friendly relations would be further strengthened by this gesture by the University of Jammu and eni ghana e&p ltd. He expressed his desire to see the programme repeated in near future in Ghana to cover more schools and to involve more children in the programme. He asked Prof. Bhat to express sincere gratitude and thanks to the Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu for sending his faculty members and research scholars to organise the workshop in association with eni Ghana in Accra. Mr. Badoo highly appreciated the untiring efforts and commitment by Dr. Jonathan Craig to launch this Children s education programme in India and planning to organise it globally, starting in Ghana. Mr. Jerry Greenfields, Geoscientist, eni ghana e&p ltd conducted the proceedings of the inaugural function of the workshop. The vote of thanks was presented by Mr. Daniel Asiedu, Dean Faculty of Sciences, University of Ghana. Proceedings of the Workshop Energy Efficiency Campaign (EEC): A lecture series was delivered by Dr. Jonathan Craig, Vice- President, Regional Studies and Exploration Opportunities Selection, eni e&p division, for the school children of Ghana. About 50 children from different government and private schools from various provinces of Ghana (Annexure 1) attended the programme. Teaching materials provided to each student and the accompanying teachers included a booklet on Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and Environmental Concerns, a set of CD s of the eni presentation on Petroleum Geology & Exploration, Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, eni T-Shirts, writing pads, pen, pencils, and workshop bags. 11
A series of lectures was given by Dr. Jonathan Craig with support from Prof. G M. Bhat, Dr. Bindra Thusu and faculty and research scholars of the IERT (Mr. Naveen Hakhoo and Mr. Mateen Hafiz), University of Jammu and University of Ghana (Prof. David Atta Peters, Mr. Mawuli Tay, Ms. Nidra Araba Hammond, Mr. Williams Asigri, Jones Okai Edem, Nana Ayebean Larbi, Rita Akorli Delali, Alordome Peter Kwasi (Research Scholars & Undergraduate Students). The lectures delivered by Dr. Jonathan Craig and Prof. G. M. Bhat covered the following topics: 1. Petroleum Systems and Petroleum Geology 2. The Search for Oil and Gas, Exploration and Development Techniques 3. Climate Change, Global Warming and Environmental concerns 4. Geology of Ghana 5. Climate Change and Himalayan Glaciers: Impact and Consequences 6. Energy Efficiency and Conservation In addition, exercises were given to the students to differentiate various minerals on the basis of colour, lustre, streak and specific gravity. Various rocks of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic origin were introduced to the students. A suite of fossils was displayed and their history and importance in the geological record were demonstrated by the research scholars from IERT, Jammu University and Earth Sciences Department, University of Ghana. A poster session was organised for the students on the theme of Energy Efficiency, Energy Resources and Global Warming. The standard of the posters presented by the students was very high. First, second and third prizes were awarded for the best posters as selected by the judges, which included Dr. Jonathan Craig, Prof. G.M. Bhat, Dr. Bindra Thusu, Dr. A. Badoo and Dr. Sudeep Kanungu (EGI, University of Utah). In addition, two posters were selected for consolation prizes. Books, CDs and certificates were given to the best poster presentations. All the students and teachers who participated in the programme were given certificates of participation. Nkroful High School Consolation prizes The workshop was interactive in nature: questions were posed to the students by Dr. Craig and were satisfactorily and enthusiastically responded to by them. There was a high level of interaction with the students, which demonstrated their clear understanding of the issues raised during the presentation sessions. A questionnaire, based on the HSBC (Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation) 2007 Climate Awareness Survey, was distributed among the students, who were asked to reply in yes or no to the questions posed. The results show that the students of Ghana are very aware of the environmental concerns and the role they can play in managing the environment as is reflected by the results shown in the Table 1. 12

Co-winner of the UCL Second Prize in the Schools Poster Competition on Global Warming, Energy Efficiency, Climate and Environmental Concerns Winner of the IERT-University of Jammu & University of Ghana Third Prize in the Schools Poster Competition on Global Warming, Energy Efficiency: Climate and Environmental Concerns The eni ghana e&p ltd sponsored Children s Education Programme and workshop on Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and Environmental Concerns (first international event) conducted by IERT-University of Jammu, MPRG-University College London in co-operation with Earth Sciences Department-University of Ghana, eni Milan, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation and Ministry of Education- Republic of Ghana has successfully completed; following the astounding success of initial events in India (starting in Jammu, J&K in conjunction with the eni co-sponsored International Conference on the Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential of Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Basins in India, Pakistan and the Middle East in February 2008), second in Ladakh (J&K), third in Jodhpur (Rajasthan), fourth in Jaisalmer 24
(Rajasthan) and fifth event in Srinagar (J&K). The first international Children s Education Programme in Ghana is a firm foundation for similar events scheduled for Karachi (Pakistan), Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Angola and Congo in 2011-2014. The children consider climate change and global warming the biggest challenge of the present times. They are confident that they will be able to take a step forward in the right direction and are committed to make a significant effort to reduce climate change. This pioneering effort has paved the way for some firm steps which will veer the path leading to the destruction of the mankind towards the sustenance of a Clean and Green Earth. The concluding session consisted of prize distribution and concluding remarks by Mr. Badoo, Mr. Jerry Greenfields and teacher and student representatives of the participating schools. The teachers and students expressed their satisfaction on the successful completion of the workshop and desired it to be repeated for a larger participation of the schools from Accra and other regions of Ghana in the near future. The main highlight of the workshop was, in conformity with the earlier workshops conducted in India, that most of the students pledged to take geosciences as their career in future and serve their country as enlightened citizens. Dr. Sudeep Kanungu (EGI, University of Utah) announced the winners of the Children s poster presentation awards. In his remarks, Dr. Kanungu praised the students for their commendable efforts in preparing the thematic posters and advised them to continue their good work and be partners in the Global efforts to combat the Global Warming and Climate Change. Mr. Badoo, while presenting the vote of thanks, again expressed his desire and requested informally to repeat the programme in near future in Ghana. With this the workshop concluded and the participants posed for a group photograph in front of the Centre for African Wetlands. 25
