Growing Containers Plant the Planet www.bccab.com
01. Background Some claim that the North American Indians were the first container growers in the world. They put a seed in the throat of a fish, germinated it and let the seedling grow as long as nutrients and moisture were available in the container. New types of growing systems evolved over the years, but many systems were yet limited in performance due to poor container design and limited practical experience. Paper pots and poly bags were tested and used in the 1930s, plastic bags in the 1950s, styrofoam containers in the 1970 s, to the wide variety of rigid-walled plastic containers in use today. Finding the optimal growing container, both from a biological and economical point of view, is still one of the most important concerns for forest nurseries of today. From a global perspective the most popular growing containers today is made of hard plastic. With the extensive portfolio of rigid-walled plastic containers, BCC has become the natural market leader also in this segment. It is BCC s objective to remain the market leader in the development of modern and advanced growing systems through close cooperation with growing/nursery experts around the world. 3.
02. Concept No single growing container design will ever fill the requirements of every grower worldwide, because of differences in propagation practices, target seedling requirements and infield conditions. The result of our long experience within the industry is an extensive product portfolio of growing containers, each one with special features and characteristics. BCC growing container systems are all designed with the focus on optimizing space utilization, root system development, high quality plant production and efficient handling from the nursery to the field. The BCC collection includes multi-cell growing trays, both fixed and single cell systems, round and square cells, solid wall with ribs, side slit and the Air Cell /AirBock systems with Active Root Guiding. As the industry is continuously changing with new requirements BCC will continue to develop models in close co-operation with experts and growers. 5.
03. Models The well-known HIKO growing container system is designed specifically for forestry purposes. Its compact dimension ensures easy handling in the production process. The Plantek & BCC SideSlit containers ensure optimal utilization of the greenhouse and holding areas. Square cells have a high growing density (cells/m2) and the container is designed to minimize the risk of root bridging between cells by using the patented design of staggered side slits. As a complement to our wide range of growing trays, BCC also offers superior growing solutions to nurseries working with a single cell system. The different BCC Single Cell systems allow for optimizing nursery capacities by consolidation after the germination and rooting phase and also for increased flexibility to allow for spacing, sorting and grading. The design of all BCC growing systems reflects the experience and input we have gained from researchers and nurserymen worldwide. All BCC systems are designed to give your seedlings or cuttings the best possible start in life with a well-developed root system and rapid infield establishment after planting. All our containers are manufactured using highest quality plastic raw material with additives, ensuring a long life expectancy. 7.
04. Quality The quality of a forestry seedling is determined by out planting performance both in initial survival and subsequent growth. Tree seedling survival and growth are directly related to the ability of the root system to rapidly generate new roots and establish into the surrounding soil. For this reason forest seedling container features are designed to encourage the seedling to develop good root systems in the nursery and to protect the roots until the seedling is planted infield. The motto of containerized forest nurseries should always remain: the growing of root crops. Some aspects of container design: Container size for local conditions and type of species Growing density for good propagation and economy Cell design features to control root growth Container and cell design affecting moisture content and temperature of the growing substrate 9.
04. Design BCC growing containers have different design features due to the different growing conditions and climate conditions of our customers. These features are, nevertheless, representing advanced and modern cell designs integrated in BCC s growing systems. Many of our containers share the same outer dimensions (at least in one aspect), which allows for quick and easy changes in the production process (adjustments to filling and seeding line). It also ensures the same handling and transport system can be used in the nursery and out to the field. Operational Benefits & Key Features High quality PP plastic for maximum expected life. UV resistent. Airblock design for active root guiding. Side Slit design for improved aeration. Internal root guiding ribs to avoid root spiraling. Ventilation holes for air circulation. Large bottom drainage holes for drainage. Smooth wall surfaces for de-plugging and cleaning. Rigidity for better handling and mechanization. Designed to be nested and stacked for storage and transport. Used growing containers can be recycled. 11.
