NW Think not of the Martial Arts as combat alone; it is also the study of peace and seeking the way of harmony. Hironori Ohtsuka Another Fantastic Summer at Sentenashi July began with a very special Training Camp featuring Awakara and Shimura Sensei s all the way from Japan. Advanced belt ranks from across Canada and the United States were fortunate to examine the defining details of some of the cornerstone kihon s and kata s of our style Wado Karatedo with these legendary teachers. Next years summer camp will be held in Ontario. Watch for more details and additional benefits of your CZWKA membership. We had great weather and a terrific group of karatiga s for our annual Summer Camp. Mornings were spent fine- tuning our kata s and kumite under the shade of the glorious big trees, while afternoons were spent in a blur of water fun, challenging obstacle courses, outrageous grossonator and creative weapon crafting! The camp is a successful because of the people involved and we had an outstanding group of engaged team leaders aspiring to become future Sensei s. Many thanks to Caroline Popilchak, Craig Fallis, and Karl Norena, Heidi Fell and Rose Buckie for the valued and integral part they contributed. Next year s camp is already booked for the week of July 14 th! Hope you can plan to join us! To wrap up camp week, the dojo hosted our annual Summer Shiai. The competition was friendly, fair and fun for all the karatiga s that participated. Many thanks go to the overwhelming generosity of spectators with their donations to the Calgary Food Bank. Such kindness is a lovely reflection of the compassion we practice at the dojo. Mark your calendars for our next competition, the Winter Shiai, December 14 th. Summer at the dojo traditionally comes to an end with our annual Open House. Once a year we invite family and friends to come and observe what Sentenashi is all about. It is an opportunity for your karatiga to shine, proudly displaying all the skills they have been training so hard at. Please plan to attend on this special Saturday, August 24 th. Students are asked to arrive 10 minutes before their regular class time and are welcome to stay as long as they wish. Please note unlike at our Shiai, no filming is permitted.

NW Sentenashi Karate Academy August starts another season for the Academy, the school team of athletes that focuses on the sport aspect of Karatedo. This program is based on Karate Canada s Long- Term Athlete Development Model (Karate for Life). Please see www.karatecanada.org for more information. Last year the Academy produced numerous provincial champions and three Alberta team members, Sensei Ethan, Sensei Malakai and Sempai Kyle. Autumn at Sentenashi The school is now accepting new members with a special incentive of $100.00 off the registration fee for families and friends. Our greatest advertisement is word of mouth and we appreciate your vote of confidence. Gee tops are once again required after Labor Day weekend as we go back to our traditional uniform for training. The new schedule begins Tuesday, September 3 rd. Please note the few small changes in times as well as the dates for dojo closures. Keep in mind, students are welcome and encouraged to attend make- up classes before and after absences. If you re not sure about available classes, please call the office. The beginning of a new school year is a good time to consider moving your karatiga from the children s class to the adult class. Potential candidates for this move are students desiring more of a challenge or those wanting to streamline their training. Again, please call the office if this is something you might be interested in. Kumite (Sparring) Class Kumite or sparring is an important aspect of your karatedo training. It is where all the basics, punches, kicks and blocks, are applied in a freestyle but controlled atmosphere. We offer two kumite classes each week at no extra charge. Although both classes are built around skills and drills, Thursdays Kumite class focus is on the application of Wado fundamentals in a hands- on environment which is very important to sparring and self defense concepts, whereas Saturdays Sparring class focuses more on competitive development following World Karatedo Federation practices and gives anyone interested in refereeing an opportunity to practice. When karate makes it into the Olympics, these are the rules that will be used. I highly recommend taking advantage of these classes and can t stress enough how important a part of the advanced/shodan grading it is. Therefore, it is advisable to begin this training as early as possible. Sparring is mandatory for all advanced gradings and will provide the physical and mental discipline needed for self- defense skills to reach their full potential.

It s been a truly amazing year in my first term as head coach for the Alberta Team. I m looking forward to conquering new challenges this year as I ve been chosen as lead coach for the Canadian Japan Karatedo Federation Wado- kai in preparation for the World JKF Wado- kai Championships in Japan 2015. Have you given any thought to your martial challenges and goals for this year? The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it but that our aim is too low and we reach it. See you on the floor. Sincerely, -Michelangelo- Hanshi D. JAPAN 2015 Japan 2015 Committee CZWKA members have a chance to participate in a once in a lifetime opportunity, representing Canada at the JKF Wado-Kai World Championships in Japan, August 2015. Besides the prospect of competing, participants will experience the culture of Japan, train in various dojos with different Sensei s, and met other Wado practitioners from all over the world! Along with the actual competing, this trip to Japan will include technical training, seminars and a grading for those that are interested. Sound fantastic? It s going to be. But in order to make this a dream come true for our athletes, we need you! We need people to chip in and volunteer their areas of expertise like fundraising, travel organization, marketing, social media, promotion, managing logistics, finding corporate sponsorship, to just name a few. No one person can do all this but as a committee, together, we will be successful and achieve this goal. If you are interested in adding your skills, whatever they might be, please join our team by contacting Kyoshi Tracy Strohbach at senseistrohbach@canadajkfwadokai.org. Japan 2015 Team Canada The JKF Wado-Kai World Championships is an incredible opportunity for CZWKA athletes to compete in Japan and represent Canada. Divisions available are youth (12-13), cadets (14-15), juniors (16-17), and seniors (18+). There will be a team selection in order to qualify to attend these championships. For more information about the selection process and timing, please contact Hanshi David Strohbach at senseistrohbach@canadajkfwadokai.org. August 2015 may seem far away now, but you know as an athlete to start training and preparing now. Good luck
