Nikon Firmware Update for Coolpix 5000 Version 1.7 Notes: 1. It is most important that you follow the supplied directions; failure to follow all of the steps may result in your camera being disabled. 2. This update is for Coolpix 5000 cameras only! It is strongly suggested that you avoid any background process that may disrupt the Updater communication process. 3. It is advised not to touch the mouse or keyboard once the uploader starts to ensure against accidental launch of an application or other process. 4. This Software and Firmware is Licensed and Copyright of Nikon Corporation Japan 1.0 System requirements CPU: Hard Disk Space: RAM: Interface: Pentium 120MHz or greater 5MB or more 32MB or more USB interface (built-in only) Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (note 1) Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME) Microsoft Windows XP Professional (note 1) Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (note 1) Notes 1) You must have Administrator authority on your computer to install, uninstall, or run the Uploader Software. See your network administrator if you require this authority. 2.0 About software and firmware The Firmware Uploader Software for the E5000 Ver.1.7 is a computer program that updates the firmware in your COOLPIX 5000 (E-5000). The firmware is a program, which runs inside the camera and controls its operation. By running the Uploader Software you will install the new firmware in the camera. The process of transferring the new firmware from the computer to the camera is sometimes called Uploading, Upgrading or Updating the firmware.

If your camera is version 1.6 or 1.5 it is recommended that you update the firmware in your camera to 1.7 in order to benefit from improved operating performance. The entire package (Uploader software and new firmware for the camera) is supplied in a single file, which is compressed for distribution over the Internet. Before performing a firmware update, you must de-compress the files back to their original format. 3.0 Improvements and bug fixes in version 1.7 1) Support for RAW (NEF) Image Quality A RAW image-quality function has been added to the COOLPIX5000 firmware. When an image-quality setting of RAW is selected, HI blinks in the camera s control panel. Additionally, RAW images can be converted to TIFF using the cameras menu. 2) Control options for Shutter Release Speed The Monitor Options item in the setup menu now contains a Shutter Release Speed setting that controls the speed of shutter response as follows. Option Normal : Priority given to quality of preview displayed in monitor. Option Quick Response : Reduces the time lag between pressing the shutter-release button all the way down and shutter being released to take a picture. 3) Internal Flash Off option The Speedlight Control menu now contains an Internal Flash Off option that allows you to turn the built-in Speedlight off entirely. The built in Speedlight will still fire if red-eye reduction is on only to reduce red-eye; it will not fire during the actual exposure. Additionally, the internal flash will fire a monitor pre-flash (but not an actual exposure flash) if a Nikon Speedlight is connected. 4) Support for Picture Transfer Protocol PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) option is now available in the USB menu in the Interface setting for the setup menu in User Sets 1, 2 and 3. 5) Support for Exif 2.2 The COOLPIX5000 firmware version 1.7 now supports Exif (Exchangeable Image File Format for Digital Still Cameras) version 2.2, a standard that allows information stored with photographs to be used for optimal color reproduction when images are output on EXIF-compliant printers. PRINT Image Matching (PIM) is no longer supported by COOLPIX5000 firmware version 1.7. Users who require PIM should not apply this update.

6) Improvements in LCD monitor display The LCD monitor has been improved to allow better display of images when viewing in dark surroundings. Monitor brightness has also been improved. 7) Shutter speed information corrected when using BULB exposure Previously when shooting an image with a BULB exposure time of more than 100 seconds, the shutter speed information recorded in the shooting information was incorrect. This has now been fixed. 8) Improvements in autofocus performance Autofocus performance has been improved. 4.0 Restrictions on Usage This utility will update the firmware in your COOLPIX 5000 to version 1.7. It can only be used if the version of the firmware in your COOLPIX 5000 is version 1.6 or 1.5 and is not suitable for use with any other model of Coolpix camera. This version of the firmware can only update NTSC cameras. 5.0 Warnings Your COOLPIX 5000 could malfunction should any of the problems listed below occur while the firmware is being upgraded. Please exercise all necessary caution during the upgrade. The upgrade can be performed for you at a Nikon-authorized service center in the event that you do not have the equipment necessary to perform the upgrade, or are otherwise unsure that you would be able to perform the upgrade yourself. Your COOLPIX 5000 could malfunction should any of the following occur during upgrade: 1. The camera turns off during the upgrade process 2. The data cable is disconnected 3. A problem occurs with the computer 4. The upgrade is performed in a place where there is excessive electrical noise. The camera could also malfunction if you make a forced exit from the uploader or another application interferes with the uploader during the upgrade. Be sure to exit any other applications before running the uploader software. 6.0 Confirming the current firmware version 1. Turn the camera off 2. Hold down the MENU button (center LCD button). 3. Turn the camera On while continuing to hold down the MENU button until an image appears. The screen will display the current firmware version like: E5000V1.6 or 1.5. If it reads other than 1.6 or 1.5, your firmware should not be updated.

4. Turn the select dial Off. This completes the version confirmation procedure. 7.0 Prepare for the Upgrade Please make sure that you have the following items available 1. Power source - any one of the following: a. The Nikon EH-21 AC Adapter. b. A fresh 6V Lithium battery (2CR5/DL245) new and within the manufacturer s Use By date c. A fully charged EN-EL1 2. Cable a. Nikon UC-E1 SB Cable 3. COOLPIX 5000 User s Manuals NOTE: Please use only authentic Nikon AC adapters and cables; other products may damage the COOLPIX 5000. 8.0 Windows 98 SE Users If you are connecting the camera to your Windows98 SE computer for the first time, you must install the device driver. If connecting the camera to your Windows98 SE computer for the first time, download Nikon_USB_Update from the same page from which this Firmware Uploader Software was downloaded and install the device driver. Follow the instructions displayed on your computer s monitor to install the device driver. 9.0 Upgrading the Firmware 1. Attach AC adapter or insert fresh batteries into camera. Connect the camera to the computer using the USB cable and insert a card into the camera. Verify computer connection to the camera by viewing the marching ants in the camera s display. 2. Download and unzip the cp5000fw17.zip file, after downloading open the new directory 3. Double-click on the Uploader application. The file called firmware.bin is the actual firmware, which will be transferred to the camera. 4. When the text Click Upload button to start the update appears in the dialog box, click the Upload button. Once you have pressed this button, do not stop or interrupt the utility while it is in progress, or damage to the COOLPIX 5000 may result.

5. The firmware upgrade process will begin. (This progress bar may flash during the upload process on Windows PCs.) This should take between three and ten minutes depending on the speed and configuration of our computer. The following messages will be displayed during execution: DO NOT TURN THE CAMERA OFF Writing Firmware 6. When the text Writing Firmware is complete appears in the dialog box, the process is complete. Click Close to close the utility. 7. Remove the camera from the system. Windows XP: Click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon in the taskbar and select Disable USB Mass Storage Device Drive (E:)* from the menu that appears. Windows 2000 Professional: Click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon in the taskbar and select Disable USB Mass Storage Device Drive (E:)* from the menu that appears. Windows ME: Click the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon in the taskbar and select Disable USB Disk (E:)* from the menu that appears. Windows 98SE: Double-click the My Computer icon and select the removable disk corresponding to the camera. Open the File menu and select Eject. *The name displayed for the drive (ex. E: ) may vary between computer systems. Turn the camera off. Remove the battery or disconnect the AC Adapter. Disconnect the USB cable. This completes the update. Connect the AC Adapter or insert the battery 8. Verify the new firmware version in the camera (Step 6.0 above) IMPORTANT: On computers running Windows 2000 and Windows ME, the Windows message Device removal warning will appear during the upload process. This is a standard system message and can be ignored. When the Writing Firmware is complete message appears (step 5, this section), click OK at the bottom of the Device removal warning dialog to exit this warning.

On computers running Windows XP, a Removable Disk window may appear during the upload process. This is a standard system message and can be ignored. When the Writing Firmware is complete message appears (step 5, this section), click Cancel to close the Removable Disk window. If Windows Explorer is displayed, click the Close box to exit the Explorer. 10.0 If things do not go as planned The uploader software may not function as expected on some models of personal computer. 1. Error in writing Firmware message Should this occur, click "Close" to exit the uploader, disconnect the serial cable and follow the steps above to confirm the camera firmware version. If the firmware version displayed is "E5000V1.7," the upgrade was successful. Any other display, "E5000V1.6" for example, indicates that your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. In this case you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center to upgrade the firmware. 2. Compatibility problems may exist between the uploader and certain computers, making normal communication with the COOLPIX 5000 impossible. When the computer is unable to communicate with the camera, the upgrade will stop and start repeatedly. In extreme cases, this process of interruption and resumption may repeat indefinitely. Should this occur, press the Option, Command and Esc keys on the computer simultaneously to force the program to quit. Restart your computer. If this problem occurs, your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. To upgrade the firmware, you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center.
