Why cmpetency-based interviews (CBI)? Cmpetencies are frward-lking; they describe skills and attributes that staff and managers need t build human capital and meet future challenges Cmpetencies help rganizatins clarify expectatins and define future develpment needs CBI questins ask abut past prfessinal experiences that can demnstrate that the applicant is cmpetent The thery is that if yu can demnstrate that yu have dne it in the past r have learned frm the past, chances are that yu will be able t d it in the future When assessing the applicants respnses, panels will ascertain the depth and cmplexity f the respnses given by applicants CBI is smetimes referred t as behaviral r situatinal interviewing 4

CAR (L) Principle Cntext: Yu will be expected t give an verview f the situatin: what the situatin was abut, hw yu first gt invlved, what were the key events and the time frame Actins Yu will be expected t cver significant events, specific instances, that were clearly attributable t yu rather than the team Results What was the utcme, impact r results f yur actins: Yu may be asked questins such as hw did it turn ut? Preparing and Practicing Be flexible and nn-demanding with timing Prepare fr the interview: learn as much as yu can abut the rganizatin (mandate, publicatins, rganigramme, strategic directins, news, etc.) understand the psitin and lk at the cmpetencies in the jb pening review yur applicatin/php and select real examples matching yur accmplishments t the cmpetencies (i.e. hw did yu wrk in a team, slve cnflict, mbilize resurces, etc.) Practice, practice, practice befrehand (refer t yur applicatin and the requirements f the jb pening) If invited t an interview: face-t face, knw what yu are ging t wear and err n the side f cnservatism telephne (r Skype/VTC) make sure yu are in a private lcatin and equipment is wrking 6
