www.osram.com XENARC headlight lamps. Perfect companions for the road. High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and systems.

XENARC 2

OSRAM an arc of stability in the automotive lighting sector. As the world s leading supplier in the automotive lighting sector, OSRAM has been manufacturing lamps for headlights since 1919. In 1991, OSRAM introduced the first xenon discharge lamp. Since then, our XENARC portfolio has been constantly extended and optimized to provide maximum performance and open up new possibilities in headlight and vehicle design. XENARC lamps produce more than twice as much light as conventional headlight lamps, yet consume up to 50 % less energy. And that s just the beginning of the many benefits. 3

XENARC PRINCIPLE The XENARC principle. Better visibility, greater safety, higher efficiency. 4

Light distribution with halogen lights Light distribution with XENARC lights With XENARC lamps, a proven increase in driving safety has been achieved. They illuminate roads much better than halogen lamps, so that drivers can stay focused and can react more quickly to any obstacles, signs or dangers. Furthermore, they are easier on the eyes and usually outlast the average automobile. In order to allow for the most progressive and most aesthetically advanced headlight design, OSRAM provides you with the XENARC solution that suits you best. We offer XENARC lamps for projection headlight systems as well as for refl ection headlight systems and give you the choice between lamps with and without integrated high-voltage igniters in protected lamp bases. The visionary XENARC technology. XENARC headlight lamps belong to the family of discharge lamps and as a defi ning characteristic emit their light through an electrical discharge in the shape of an arc. Conventional halogen lamps, in contrast, generate light from a wire fi lament. The XENARC technology consists of a light arc between two electrodes in a microenvironment of xenon gas and metal halide salts hermetically sealed in a tiny quartz capsule. As XENARC lamps do not run on low-voltage DC current, an electronic control gear is required for operating the lamp. XENARC lamps with integrated igniters (D1 and D3), XENAELECTRON control gear and OSRAM connecting cables create the perfect combination for a complete system solution. Above: Wire element of a halogen lamp Below: Light arc of a XENARC lamp XENARC Main benefits Whiter and brighter light similar to natural daylight Improved visibility and safety Very long average lifetime High reliability Highly compact systems Perfectly suitable for intelligent lighting systems such as AFS Outstanding effi cacy 5

XENARC D1 AND D2 XENARC D1 and D2. Don t call them standard, call them original. Benefits Extremely high luminous fl ux at more than 50 % lower energy consumption High color temperature for less strain on the driver s eyes during long night drives Increased product reliability based on 20 years of experience and continuous improvement by OSRAM The right choice for more safety on the road offers a number of advantages, such as higher luminous effi cacy, reduced heat output and much longer lamp life. XENARC D1 and D2 lamps generate more than twice as much light as modern halogen lamps and still require less energy, which leads to a light effi ciency that is up to three times higher than that of conventional halogen lights. Since the already established XENARC D1 and D2 lamps operate at 4,150 K, in comparison to the 3,200 K of standard halogen lamps, the color temperature of the light is much closer to that of natural daylight. It is therefore whiter and is perceived as being brighter. Contrasts can be seen more easily and thus objects can be detected earlier. Moreover, XENARC D1 and D2 lamps have an average life of 3,000 operating hours, which normally covers the usual lifetime of a car. 6

XENARC D3 AND D4 Mercury-free XENARC D3 and D4. Treating the environment with care. Benefits Same benefi ts as D1 and D2 types Environmentally friendly Excellent color maintenance Most of all, XENARC headlight lamps are famous for their outstanding performance. Since 2006, however, XENARC has also made a name for itself for being kind to the environment. Our innovative research and development team has succeeded in designing a range of environmentally friendly, mercury-free products that do not compromise performance and still offer the advantages of existing XENARC lamps. The light output and color of XENARC D3 and D4 light sources are comparable to D1 and D2 types and their color maintenance is even better. Since they have different electrical properties than D1 and D2 types, they require different control gear. In order to avoid any interchangeability with electronics or other lamp types, each XENARC lamp has its own unique base and connector code. As D3 and D4 lamps are already designed to fulfi ll the requirements of the EU Commission Decision 2010/115/EU regarding directive 2000/53/EC (ELV), they are perfect companions for the road today and for the years to come. 7

XENARC COOL BLUE INTENSE XENARC COOL BLUE INTENSE. Safety meets style. Benefits COOL BLUE effect thanks to very high color temperature (5,000 K) Clear outer bulb and therefore homogeneous light distribution without loss of light due to absorptive coatings High-contrast and precise road illumination Long average lifetime Ideal for design-oriented drivers stylish, modern appearance on the road ECE and DOT-approved, globally applicable OEM quality; interchangeability with D1 or D2 lamps The new D1 and D2 XENARC COOL BLUE INTENSE lamps produce their attractive bluish-white light not by means of blue-coated areas on the outer bulb but with the help of a special fi lling system. With a color temperature of up to 5,000 K and a luminous fl ux of approximately 3,400 lm, these lamps are very effi cient and provide up to 20 % more light on the road compared to coated xenon lamps. Their clear outer bulbs allow for an even light distribution. With their highcontrast light, people, dirt-covered road markings and other obstacles can be recognized more easily during night drives. Furthermore, XENARC COOL BLUE INTENSE lamps provide a particularly stylish look. Best in class: with their bluish-white, bright light, XENARC COOL BLUE INTENSE lamps offer the maximum allowable color temperature in accordance with ECE R99. 8

XENARC + XENAELECTRON XENARC + XENAELECTRON + cable. You only have to stop once to get it all. Benefits of OSRAM D1/D3 systems Perfectly matched to OEM automotive requirements Excellent EMI performance Compact, robust, lightweight and customized housing design of XENAELECTRON control gear Highly fl exible connecting cables suitable for AFS OSRAM offers the perfect system solution consisting of lamp (with integrated igniter), control gear and connecting cable. Our HID system competence, however, goes much further: all system components are systematically customized to meet your individual requirements. Moreover, your fl exibility is increased and an optimum system operation with excellent EMI performance is ensured: our XENAELECTRON control gear provides optimal operation of D1 and D3 HID lamps in 12 V as well as 24 V systems. Their innovative design facilitates use in today s demanding HID headlight applications. With the D3 HID headlight system, OSRAM is the world s fi rst supplier of an entirely mercury-free HID system. OSRAM s fl exible connecting cables are the perfect connection between XENAELECTRON control gear and XENARC lamps. They are available in all required lengths and with all matching plugs for XENARC lamps. 9
