A three-player team from each of the 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia participate in the event. The competition consists of three 18-hole stroke play rounds, with the two lowest scores by players from each team constituting the team score for each round. The USGA allows state associations the option to choose their teams by any method. College players are ineligible due to NCAA restrictions. The Montana State Golf Association has established a system wherein players in selected tournaments are awarded points toward selection for the State Team. These are the qualifying tournaments and the points awarded at each of three levels: Level I (Points awarded to top 10 finishers, from 150 down to 60 points in increments of 10) Fourth of July Tournament (Whitefish) Montana State Amateur US Amateur Qualifier Level II (Points awarded to top 8 finishers, from 100 down to 30 points in increments of 10) Barnett Memorial Day (Missoula) Montana State Match Play Montana State Mid-Amateur Level III (Points awarded to top 5 finishers, from 50 down to 10 points in increments of 10) Gallatin Valley Open (Bozeman) Lake City Open (Polson) Montana Open (Missoula) Montana State Seniors Oilfield (Shelby) Old Works Amateur Yellowstone County Amateur (Billings) In addition, a 50 percent bonus will be given to all tournament winners, so 75 points will be added to the champion of Tier I events, 50 points to Tier II, and 25 to Tier III. Bonus points will be awarded to Montana golfers who do well at Mid-Amateur and Senior qualifying tournaments held out of state (no available in Montana).
