ED 101 Educational Technology Lab - Fall 2010 Boston University School of Education WEB-BASED LESSON PLAN Requirement Your Answer Grade LESSON BASICS (21 pts.) Your Name Victoria Bado ED 101 Lab Section G1 School (1 pt.) Bowman Elementary School Grade/Grades Observing 3 rd (1 pt.) Supervising Teacher Mrs. Kuschel (1 pt.) Content Area(s) Science (1 pt.) Setting (in class or in Computer Lab computer lab) (1 pt.) Title of web site (1 pt.) The Water Cycle Topic of Lesson (1 pt.) The Water Cycle Goals of the Lesson (4 pts.) Students will know how the water cycle works, and how it affects their lives daily. Three Objectives (10 pts.) - Students will be able to identify all four stages of the water cycle. - Students will be able to describe how water changes from one stage to another by adding or taking away heat. - Students will be able to explain how the actions of people can change the quality of the water cycle. TECHNOLOGY (23 pts.) Technology needed to complete lesson (3 pts.) One computer for each student is required (for Mrs. Kuschal s class this means approximately 24 computers) 1 st Technology standard G3-5: 2.13 Recognize and demonstrate ergonomically sound and safe use of equipment. How your lesson will help students meet this standard Students are given the freedom to use a computer independently, and will be reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate and respectful manner while in the computer lab. This behavior includes proper use of computer stations, following directions, etc. If they are unable to demonstrate such behavior, they may be removed from a computer station and given deskwork to do.

2 nd Technology standard How your lesson will help meet this standard Describe how students are grouped in the setting you listed above (3 pts.) Materials needed (2 pts.) List any teaching help you may have (2 pts.) Introduction of Lesson (3 pts.) Curriculum Framework that your lesson will help the students meet Lesson Procedure (8 pts.) G3-5: 2.6 Analyze media messages and determine if their purpose is to inform, persuade, or entertain Each video and audio clip is introduced with questions. Students are expected to take time to analyze each question, and thoughtfully answer them either to themselves or on a piece of paper. LESSON PROCEDURE (36 pts.) Each student will be sitting individually at a computer station KWL worksheet Assessment worksheet The classroom teacher will available to help during this lesson First the students will be given a KWL worksheet (what you know, what you want to know, and what you learned). They will be asked to fill out the first two sections (K and W). Then the students will be led to the computer lab, where they will each sit at a station and be allowed to roam the website freely (with the exception of the quiz page). 3 rd grade Earth Science: The Water Cycle In grades 3 5, students explore properties of geological materials and how they change. They conduct tests to classify materials by observed properties, make and record sequential observations, note patterns and variations, and look for factors that cause change. Students observe weather phenomena and describe them quantitatively using simple tools. They study the water cycle, including the forms and locations of water. The focus is on having students generate questions, investigate possible solutions, make predictions, and evaluate their conclusions. Learning standards for grades 3 5 fall under the following six subtopics: Rocks and Their Properties; Soil; Weather; The Water Cycle; Earth s History; and The Earth in the Solar System. First the students will be given a KWL worksheet. They will be asked to fill out the first two sections (K and W). Then the students will be lead to the computer lab, where they will each sit at a station. The website will be presented as a giant review, since they have been working on the topic for a few classes already. They will be instructed to

How web site is used during lesson (8 pts.) Wrap Up of Lesson How will students be assessed? How will you know if students have met the objectives stated above? Web-based Quiz (10 pts) roam the website individually for a set amount of time, and they will not be allowed to attempt the quiz until that time is up. Following that, each student will attempt to complete the quiz. After they finish the quiz, they will be instructed to go back to the worksheet and fill out the last column. Finally, the teacher will ask the entire class to share at least one item from each column, and select a few students to present to the class. The website will provide a review for the students, and hopefully answer any questions they still have on the topic. Also, as the students roam the website they are expected to add to their KWL sheet (in the L column). After a certain amount of time designated by the teacher, the students will test their knowledge with a short quiz. The teacher will ask the entire class to share at least one item from each column of the KWL sheet, and select a few students to present to the class. Also, the students will be asked to full out a quick assessment sheet. ASSESSMENT (20 pts.) After the students are done sharing, another worksheet will be passed out with a few questions on it. This includes fill in the blank with a word bank, and various simple short answer questions. This is to be assigned as homework the day the lesson is taught. All objectives will be directly connected to questions on the assessment sheet. Questions include multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer. 1. The stages of the water cycle do NOT include: a) Weather b) Condensation c) Accumulation 2. The four forms of precipitation are: a) Thunder, lightning, storm, blizzard b) Sunshine, rain, clouds, wind c) Rain, hail, sleet, snow 3. What helps the water cycle move from one stage to the next? a) Wind b) Heat

c) Pressure 4. Run-off from a watershed adds to : a) Precipitation b) Accumulation c) Condensation 5. The water cycle affects: a) Animals b) Humans c) All living things

Name: What you KNOW ALREADY What you WANT TO KNOW What you LEARNED

Name: The Water Cycle Wrap Up Questions The four stages of the Water Cycle are: A) Rain, snow, sleet, hail B) Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, accumulation C) Run-off, water shed, pollution, dirt D) Earth, wind, fire, water The sun produces, which helps create water vapor so water can evaporate. When water molecules down they turn into different types of precipitation. What are a few things humans do that hurt the Water Cycle? What can humans do to help the Water Cycle?
