Content Area: The content that will be covered will be inventions produced in ancient and modern China. The students will gain a better understanding of Chinese They will be able to identify and understand important details about each invention. 2. Topic: The topic of the lesson is inventions that were developed by the ancient and modern Chinese. The students will be able to associate a given invention with a particular time period. They will have a basic understanding of the use and function of each of these They will also be able to relate ancient inventions to their modern counterparts 3. Goals: I would like the students to gain a better understanding of the contributions that ancient China has made to the modern world. They will have a basic understanding of how the inventions work and how they are constructed. 4. Objectives: The lesson will give the students more knowledge of specified Chinese My students will be able to identify important inventions from China. My students will be able to associate a given invention with the time period in which it was created by correctly answering questions that test their knowledge of the material. My students will demonstrate that they have a basic understanding of the use of each of the inventions that are covered in the lesson by correctly answering questions that test their knowledge of the material.

2 My students will demonstrate that they have a basic understanding of how each invention was created and implemented by correctly answering questions that test their knowledge of the material. My students will be able to identify the modern counterpart of each of these My students will be able to identify at least one item in school or at home that was originally invented in ancient China. 5. Technology, materials and aids: The technology used will be the projector and computer that are in the classroom. The website will be the primary aid for the lesson plan. The website will contain images and brief bullet points that summarize the lesson that the teacher will give on the subject. The lesson will be given similar to a lecture, in which the speaker will present information to the students. Questions will be interspersed to encourage discussion and insure that the students understand the material. The assignment that accompanies the lesson will be to find at least one item at home that was originally invented in ancient China. The students will then have to write a brief paragraph explaining what the item is and why it relates to an ancient Chinese invention. 6. Procedures/methods: a. Overview: The lesson will be given as a lecture. The speaker will present the information that is summarized on the website. The website will be the primary source of images and visual references for the lesson, and is therefore necessary for the students to understand the material. Questions will be interspersed into the lecture to insure comprehension and promote discussion. The homework assignment will be to identify one item in the home that was originally invented by the Chinese and then write a brief paragraph describing it and its ancient counterpart. b. Introduction: The lesson will begin with the first time period and the earliest invention. The speaker will then proceed in chronological order and describe the important inventions as they occurred in Chinese history. The lesson will conclude with more modern inventions and developments. c. Activities: The students will remain at their desks. They can take notes to help them understand the material. The speaker will stand at the front of the class and utilize the projector to display the website on the board. The website will be used to cover the material as one would use lecture slides. Each invention would have a page with images and brief bullet points that summarize the information that the speaker will present.

3 The inventions will be covered as they were created historically. The lesson will proceed in chronological order from the earliest to the most recent Questions will be asked of the students throughout the lesson to insure their comprehension and to promote discussion. They will be encourage to ask any questions that they might have. The creation, development, and function of each invention will be briefly described. Modern counterparts will be described when applicable (paper, the compass, gunpowder, etc.) Fair use for Internet resources will be discussed briefly to insure that the students have some basic understanding of proper procedure for finding and using copyrighted materials. The technology frameworks will be discussed in order to insure student comprehension of how the website was designed and created using the resources and the proper citations. When the lesson has concluded, the assignment will be given to the students. For homework, they are to find at least one item at home that was originally invented by the ancient Chinese. They are to write a short paragraph describing the item and the developments and changes that have occurred since ancient times. d. Follow-up: The lesson will connect to the entire unit that the students are covering in the Social Studies curriculum. The homework assignment, as described above, will be to identify one item at home that was invented by the ancient Chinese and then write a paragraph describing it and the changes that have occurred over the years. For example, the differences between modern paper and the paper that was used in ancient China. 7. Technology Frameworks: G3-5: 2.3 Explain Fair Use Guidelines for the use of copyrighted materials (e.g., text, images, music, video) in student projects. G3-5: 2.6 Analyze media messages and determine if their purpose is to inform, persuade or entertain. G3-5: 3.8 Create projects that use texts and various forms of graphics, audio, and video (with proper citations) to communicate ideas. Adapted from an assignment by Prof. T. Soefijanto
