CANCER CENTER SERVICES GUIDE
A Place of Hope and Healing Since 1999, The Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health has combined medical expertise with advanced technology and access to clinical trials for the most promising new treatments. We are able to provide cancer treatment services to patients and their families close to home. Upon an extensive on-site survey process conducted by the Commission on Cancer, the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health received a perfect score, the highest possible level of accreditation a comprehensive community cancer program can receive and the third time the cancer center has earned this prestigious rating. In April 2013, Martin Health System was also presented with the 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Martin Health System is one of only 79 U.S. health care facilities and just five in the state of Florida with accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor. Radiation Oncology The department of radiation oncology of the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health System is an integral part of the most comprehensive cancer treatment program on the Treasure Coast. Our board-certified radiation oncologists create and direct cancer destroying radiation therapy plans customized to each individual. Martin Health System is committed to providing our community with state-of-the-art technologies for fighting all types of cancer. Our Varian Linear Accelerators utilize advanced modes of high-precision radiotherapies such as Rapid Arc, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery to precisely target all types of tumors while sparing healthy tissue. Additionally, we offer partial breast irradiation, a specific five day course of radiation treatment given after lumpectomy that delivers radiation therapy directly to the tissue surrounding the original tumor. 1 Robert & Carol Weissman Cancer Center
Center for Lung Health Led by Dennis Tishko, MD, FACS, who is a board certified thoracic surgeon dedicated solely to advanced cancer care and surgery, the Center for Lung Health is committed to a multidisciplinary approach to diagnose and treat cancers of the lung, chest and esophagus. Dr. Tishko pioneered a minimally invasive surgical technique single incision video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, or VATS that uses the smallest and least invasive operation possible to address lung cancer. By using a single small incision, VATS extends surgical options to those not usually thought of as operative candidates and allows for less pain, quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay and increased patient satisfaction. A lung health navigator from the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center is available to provide support and assist with the patient s overall experience, from scheduling to referrals and the development of a treatment plan. Most importantly, the navigator works proactively with patients and their families to ease the burden of arranging for access to cancer care. Infusion Suite The infusion suite offers chemotherapy and medical infusion services performed by oncology-certified RNs with a clinical pharmacist on site. It is located on the third floor (Suite 302) of the cancer center and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Patient comfort is our priority. Oncology Rehabilitation Martin Rehabilitation offers a complete and comprehensive multi-faceted treatment approach. Clinical Social Work Services A clinical oncology social worker is an integral part of the health care team at the cancer center, collaborating with other disciplines to provide the team with an understanding of the patient s individual situation. In addition, the social worker acknowledges the psychosocial and spiritual concerns of family members and respects each patient s personal dignity by providing care focused on his or her specific needs. To contact the social worker, please call 772.223.5945, ext. 3719. Oncology Patient Navigators Oncology patient navigators are clinical professionals who act as a pilot or compass to help patients through the confusing process of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. Our nurse and social worker on the navigator team serve as advocates, educators and supporters throughout the cancer journey. In addition to providing facts about cancer treatment and what to expect, the navigators provide individuals with counseling, support and referrals to community resources. They can also assist with financial/insurance questions, transportation to appointments and other barriers or challenges that a person may experience. Patient navigation is an integral part of cancer care and the multi-disciplinary team. We currently offer navigation services to patients with breast or lung cancer. Often times challenges arise during this already overwhelming experience and we are here to help. (continued) 4
The patient navigator might also talk with a patient s physician to clarify information for a patient. We want to help our patients make informed decisions and eliminate any barriers that may keep them from receiving the health care they need and deserve. Support Groups A general cancer support group is held regularly at the cancer center. Additional support groups include the Breast Cancer Support Group, Leukemia and Lymphoma Patient and Family Support Group, a Women with Lung Cancer Support Group, and Prostate Cancer Support Group.
