1 HOAG FAMILY CANCER INSTITUTE Case for Support
2 HOAG FAMILY CANCER INSTITUTE KEEPING THE PROMISE OF HOAG FAMILY CANCER INSTITUTE Dr. Eisenberg and his team of renowned physicians meet regularly to discuss strategies for advancing care. Thanks to philanthropy, Hoag Family Cancer Institute is making significant strides. Already, our renowned clinical leaders are building a model for change. We are creating a convergence of the best cancer care available today with a phenomenal patient experience. That means multi-disciplinary collaboration personalized to a patient s specific tumor, cancer type and genetics. That means diagnostics and treatments based on the latest research and evidence available. That means an organized system, built around patients, that guides and supports them every step of the way through every decision, through every experience. This type of extraordinary innovation takes extraordinary support. The Hoag Promise Campaign creates the path to our bigger vision a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, personalized and patient-centered experience for every patient, every time. We believe that this approach will give cancer patients the best care and quality of life. It s what they deserve. It s what they should expect. It s what we expect from ourselves. Aligning on Behalf of Our Community Eighty percent of cancer care in the U.S. is provided in the community setting. One of our greatest opportunities lies in leveraging the advanced research and subspecialization from academic institutions. The alliance between Hoag Family Cancer Institute and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center brings new programs, new research and new science to Orange County. This alliance gives Orange County residents access to subspecialized cancer care not previously available locally. That means Hoag patients will receive the latest cancer treatments right here in our community. Advanced imaging aids in cancer diagnosis and treatment planning BRINGING THE LATEST IN ADVANCED CANCER CARE TO OUR COMMUNITY Across the country, cancer care is broken. Our health care system is failing the 4,500 people in the U.S. who, today, will hear the news that they have cancer. And the 4,500 tomorrow. And the next day. And so on. Too many are falling into the gap between evidence-based and educated guess. Too many are struggling to make life-and-death decisions in a fragmented, disorganized system. Too many are suffering almost as much from the process of getting care as from the cancer itself. We can do better. We must do better. That s the promise of Hoag Family Cancer Institute. It always has been. Today, we are poised to make our greatest impact yet: nothing short of revolutionizing the cancer care continuum.
3 HOAG FAMILY CANCER INSTITUTE FUNDRAISING PRIORITIES The Hoag Promise Campaign is transforming the Hoag Family Cancer Institute into a world-class cancer program. Our clinical leaders have prioritized the programs, innovation opportunities, education, research, technology, facilities and clinical staff to realize our vision. The campaign goals fall into one of three overarching themes that connect fundraising priorities to meaningful community benefits. The Promise of Big Ideas When it comes to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, we intend to lead, not follow. The Hoag Promise Campaign invests in the latest advances in the quickly evolving field of cancer care. We are committed to continually innovating to offer leading-edge therapies that increase survival rates. Center for Molecular Oncology Bringing applied genomics, personal cancer care and targeted treatments to Orange County and providing the best hope for cancer patients in our community all in familiar and trusted surroundings. Developmental Therapeutics Providing access to the newest therapeutic agents (drugs in phase 1 and 2 clinical research trials) before they become widely available. Clinical and Translational Research Leveraging alliances with academic and industry partners to provide access to the most promising new and leading-edge treatments. The Promise of Empowering You Patients experience cancer care as a disorganized maze of confusing options and conflicting information all while fighting for their lives. We are creating a system where our patients are supported every step of the way. The Hoag Promise Campaign priorities empower patients with the right resources, tools and information, at the right time. Comprehensive, Site-Specific Programs (Breast, Lung, Melanoma, etc.) Providing a multi-disciplinary team approach for each patient through disease-specific specialty programs that focus care on the unique pathology and behavior of individual cancer types. Nurse Navigation Assisting patients with all tumor types by guiding them through every step of the continuum of care, from diagnosis through treatment, recovery and beyond. Hoag Health Center Irvine Cancer Center Bringing the Hoag brand of comprehensive cancer care to the Irvine community. The Promise of Extraordinary Leaders We are extremely fortunate that our community has attracted physician and nurse leaders of the highest caliber, dedicating their careers to saving lives. Here s how the Hoag Promise Campaign will support them in their important work. Endowed Chairs Supporting Hoag physician leaders and providing resources for chair holders to advance their areas of specialty. Assisting Hoag in attracting and retaining renowned clinical leaders. Staff Education and Advanced Training Providing continuing education and training for Hoag nurses and clinical staff to maintain the exemplary level of care provided at Hoag and remain in the forefront of new advances in their specialties.
4 03-04 OUR CAMPAIGN TO LEAD, INNOVATE & TRANSFORM Hoag s cancer support groups, led by Hoag Family Cancer Institute staff, provide comfort and healing along with practical tools and resources. The promise of Hoag Family Cancer Institute is to provide the most advanced cancer care available, right here in Orange County. Every patient deserves the best chance to achieve the optimum level of health available to them. We want to give them that chance. Only through philanthropy will we meet that goal. Thank you to everyone who is supporting the Hoag Promise Campaign because you are also supporting the surviving and thriving of those in our community living with cancer. Burton L. Eisenberg, M.D. Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair Hoag Family Cancer Institute Professor of Surgery, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center THE BLESSING OF HOAG IN YOUR CORNER Retired business consultant, David Hartshorn, 56, was daunted by his melanoma diagnosis. Then he had his first appointment with Burton L. Eisenberg, M.D., who acts as one of the surgical oncologists for the Melanoma Program at Hoag Family Cancer Institute and Lori Berberet, R.N., M.S., a Hoag Family Cancer Institute Nurse Navigator. From the speed of his diagnosis to the availability and professionalism of the entire staff, David says he felt Hoag s treatment plan was designed to not only to rid him of potentially life-threatening cancer, but also to comfort him. According to David, previous experiences with other medical facilities in the area did not prepare him for the level of personalized attention he received at Hoag. Lori coordinated his care between specialists, called several times to check on him and talked to him on a personal level that put him and his wife, Sherry, at ease. David felt that he was in very good hands. From the anesthesiology and radiology staff to Dr. Eisenberg who performed his surgery, all of his physicians were available and engaged in a way he had not expected. The care that I received is something I associate with large academic medical centers on the East Coast, he says. To have world-class health care and this very personalized approach locally at Hoag, it blew me away. I felt really blessed to have Hoag in my corner. YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE All of us owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of donors and volunteers who ve come before us. With your continued partnership, Hoag is committed to being the gold standard of care in Orange County, and across the nation. We extend our deepest thanks to the passionate community members and volunteer leaders who are coming together to support the Hoag Promise Campaign. As we move forward, philanthropy will be Hoag s bridge between good and exceptional.
