SGC Mission Co-ordinate Swedish R&D within the field of fuel gas technology. Disseminate results from national and international activities.
Biogas Raw biogas is not easily defined in terms of contents and gas families. It is not possible to CE mark a unit for an undefined fuel. A unit can not be sold unless it is CE marked. Suppliers will only spend money on CE certification if there is an obviously large market.
Stirling Electric efficiency only 10-15 % for small units ( 1 kw e ), up to 25 % for larger units. Thermal load for small units is 5-7 kw v for each kw e. Small units typically packaged with condensing boiler raw biogas is not an option. Part load not recommended for smaller units. Small units needs big heat storage. Quiet. Fairly low emissions. Small units best suited for buildings with high heat and/or hot water demands
Otto engines From 1 kw e in any size. Smaller units are condensing but not for biogas use. Electric efficiency is 25-35 % for sizes < 50 kw e. Up to 100 % total efficiency (not for raw biogas), typically >90 %. Natural gas, biogas, LPG and liquid fuels. (Quite) insensitive for fuel impurities and methane content. Rather high emissions. Suited for all types of buildings. You don t need to be a NASA scientist to fix one
Gas turbines From 30 kw e. Only a few suppliers and sizes. Fuel must be pressurized. Sensitive to fuel impurities (water, siloxanes etc). Very low emissions Natural gas, biogas, LPG and liquid fuels. Good part load efficiency until 50-60 % of max load. High λ high exhaust losses. Mainly for large buildings. Mainly for markets with very cheap gas and expensive electricity.
Honda Ecowill Vaillant EcoPOWER 1.0 Otto engine sold in >100.000 units in Japan. Packaged by Vaillant in Europe. Package with CHP unit, hot water tank and back up boiler. 1 kw e and 2,5 kw v back up boiler 26 kw v. Electric efficiency 26,3 % and total efficiency 92 %. 46 dba @ 1 m. On market from June 2011.
Stirling Dachs, Viessmann, Vaillant, Baxi and others. Only for upgraded biogas. 1 kw e and 5-6 kw v. 14-16 % electric efficiency, total efficiency >90 %. On market end of 2011. 8.000 SEK boiler and 15.000 for package. < 45 dba @ 1 m.
Vaillant EcoPower 3.0 & 4.7 3 kw e and 4,7 kw e and 4-12,5 kw v. Modulating to 1,3 kw e 4 kw v. electric efficiency, total efficiency about 90 %. Price 17-20.000. Noise 50-56 dba @ 2m. For upgraded biogas.
EC-Power XRGI 15 Max power 15 kw e and 30 kw v. 30 % electric efficiency, total efficiency 92 %. Modulating 6-15 kw e. Natural gas, LPG, raw biogas Noise < 49 dba @ 1 m. Price 32.000.
Viessmann Vitobloc 200 EM-36/66 and EM-55/88 36 kw e and 66 kw v. 55 kw e and 88 kw v 30/33 % electric efficiency, total efficiency >85 %. Noise 62 dba @ 2m. Available in other sizes as well and for natural gas. Three-way catalyst ensures low emissions. Approximately 75.000 for 55 kw e unit.
Capstone C30 micro turbine Power 28-30 kw Heat 50-55 kw El efficiency 25-26 % Total efficiency 80 % 65 dba @ 10 m. Price 50.000

www.sgc.se Conclusions For raw biogas use, otto engines are still the best choice of technology. Several other technologies are available but most ones only for upgraded biogas. There is a lack of CE certification regarding biogas. Swedish and other Nordic markets are perhaps not exactly No1. priority for suppliers Viessmann solution with prefab container is very attractive, though a little expensive.
