Using BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM discs This manual contains the minimum information necessary to use BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM discs with the Blu-ray/DVD-RAM Drive. When using BD-R/RE discs, please use the drive for Blu-ray discs. When using DVD-RAM discs, please use the drive for DVD-RAM discs. About the icon display under Windows XP In the case of the Blu-ray drive which supports a DVD-RAM disc, or a DVD-RAM drive, on Windows XP, it is recognized as a DVD-RAM drive. When a DVD-RAM disc supported drive is connected A DVD-RAM disc is recognized by the shell of Windows XP, however a BD-R/RE disc is not recognized. Therefore, an icon does not change at the time of BD-R/RE disc insertion. Logical format of the disc You must logically format a BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM disc before writing files on the disc. Once you have logically formatted a BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM disc, it can be used to write files just as you would do with a floppy disk or hard disk. The writing and deletion of a file are made to a formatted BD-R disc, however even if it deletes a file, the free space of a disc does not increase. If the writing and deletion of a file are repeated, the free space of a disc will decrease. Since the file once written in the BD-R disc cannot actually be deleted from on a disc, it is for the recording mode which deletes a file in pseudo by not being visible and carrying out a file. The formatted BD-R disc cannot be reformatted. Only a blank BD-R disc is possible in a format. Format types Format types are UDF () type or FAT format type. Use the format appropriated to your needs. Format.8 GB (8 cm)/9.4 GB double-sided DVD-RAM discs one side at a time. UDF () type UDF is a united standard type for Blu-ray/DVD family products. FAT Format type FAT is the standard format type for Windows. BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM discs cannot be formatted with the NTFS type supported by Windows. Starting up the formatting software About executing format software (DVDForm) When using the format software, you must logon with the user name that belongs to the account of the administrator of the computer. You must exit all operating applications used on a BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM disc prior to formatting. When formatting a BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM disc under Windows XP Set the BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM disc you want to format into the drive. Open [My Computer]. About format window The following window is shown. Follow the instructions below. Format soft starting window Click to start formatting. Click to exit DVDForm. Input a volume name. You must input a volume name when you select UDF format. When you do not input one, the volume name is set as "UDF + year + month + day" automatically. Check this when you want to perform quick formatting. The detection of all sectors is not performed. Not check this when you want to perform regular formatting. All sectors are detected and the defective sectors are detected. This is the standard format type for BD-RE disc. This format is designed to be used with Blu-ray recorders that use the Blu-ray Disc Association's video recording standard and with the recording software designed for personal computers that is based on the above standard. About the handling of BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM discs recorded by a Blu-ray/DVD VIDEO Recorder When you record onto a BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM disc with a Blu-ray/DVD video recorder, a Blu-ray/DVD video camera, or computer software that follows the Video Recording Standards developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association or the DVD Forum, a folder labeled BDAV or DVD_RTAV, in which all the relative video recording standard files are stored, is created. Do not access this folder and the files it contains with a computer. If any of the files are deleted or changed, you may not be able to play the video with a Blu-ray/DVD video recorder or the video software for computers. To access these files with a computer, you will need the special software. 6
Using Write-Protection Tool About the write-protection tool This write-protection tool is the software which enable/disable the write-protection on a BD-R/RE/DVD-RAM disc by software. This cannot enable/disable the write-protection in hardware. In the case of a DVD-RAM disc with a cartridge, write-protection can be enable/disabled in hardware by using the write-protection tab of a cartridge. The soft write-protection (enable/disable) is possible only for BD-R/RE, 4.7/9.4GB DVD-RAM, and.4/.8gb DVD-RAM disc. The soft write-protection (enable/disable) of the BD-R/RE disc with password setting cannot be changed. Starting up Write-Protect Tool From the [Start] menu, select [Programs] [Blu-ray] [BD Driver] [WPTool]. The following window is shown.
