Introduction The VPR-451 passport reader is a specialized device to read the OCR-B information printed in machine readable passports which comply with the regulations of ICAO and ISO 7501 standard. The reader operates with a single, hand-swipe motion and captures two or three machine-readable codelines simultaneously. Wired readers (marked /USB) use USB interface to communicate with a host. Wireless models (marked /Blue) send data over Bluetooth link. VPR451e variant uses built-in RFID reader to retrieve data from e-passports. Unpacking Carefully remove the reader from the box and ensure that all items have been supplied and are undamaged. Installation 1. Insert two AA cells, taking special care of right polarization (consult drawing on the underside of the reader). Vicomp recommends NiMH cells, but NiCd or alkaline batteries can be used too. 2. USB models : install supplied drivers on the host computer. Driver installation is described in the separate manual. Plug the reader into USB port of the host computer. Do not use USB cable extenders! Bluetooth models: configure the reader to communicate with specified host. Usage Take a document in such a way that a machine-readable area is visible to you. Gently put the document into the slot of the reader starting from the left side; ensure the document touches the bottom of the slot. Move the document smoothly and firmly through the slot. Do not raise the document, especially in the last phase. The reader is capable of reading at various speeds, but avoid extremes (see parameters). A few tests will enable you to understand its simplicity. when reading e-passport proceed into reading RFID data (VPR451e only). Immediately after OCR readout close the booklet and hold it flat on the back cover of the reader. Data readout takes several seconds; keep the passport still during that time. 4 www.vicomp.com.pl

LED Status Indicator VPR451 reader is equipped with bi-color LED status indicator. During normal use of the reader following states are indicated : LED off reader in low-power (sleep) state LED blinking fast: reader busy (connecting or disconnecting to the host, searching for RFID chip, processing RFID or OCR data) LED blinking slowly: reader idle, connected to the host. If the battery is properly charged LED blinks in green; the color turns to red if low battery voltage is detected. The meaning of status indicator is different in special setup state of Bluetooth readers. The setup state is entered by putting blank sheet of paper into the OCR slot before connecting battery. During setup reader enters following states in sequence: green LED blinking fast: reader prepares for setup red LED blinking fast: reader waiting for connection from the host green LED blinking fast: connected to the host The LED is switched off when hosts disconnects from the reader. Reading errors Clean the slot. Bad quality of reading Check the quality of the document. Any damages of characters like the smears or low intensity ink can influence the quality of reading. If the quality of reading is still unsatisfactory please return for service. E-passport readout problems (VPR451e only) Make sure the passport is hold flat on the back side of the reader (marked with e-passport symbol). Place the passport immediately (max. 5s) after swiping it through the slot. If you want to repeat the readout, swipe the document through the slot again, then put it on the back side of the reader. Some passports have metal screen in the cover. Open such passports before read and put only the page containing chip on the back side of the reader. The reader does not read Make sure the reader is connected with the system. Do not use USB cable extenders! Change battery. Maintenance The reader should be kept clean at all the times. Gently wipe the cover using a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt. The slot of the reader should be cleaned from dust and any other materials. For this purpose use a soft dry brush. Do not put any hard or metal objects into the slot. CAUTION If you have any problems with your reader please notify the service at the address given by the distributor. Interface VPR451/USB, VPR451e/USB use USB 2.0 interface to communicate with the host (USB 1.1 hosts can be used too). Supplied driver creates virtual serial port on the host computer. The port is used by the software to send and receive data from the reader. VPR451/Blue, VPR451e/Blue use Bluetooth link to communicate with the host. Bluetooth stack running on the host creates virtual serial port. The port is used by the software to send and receive data from the reader. The reader works with any Bluetooth enabled computer which accepts incoming SPP (Serial Port Profile) connections. 10 www.vicomp.com.pl
