2 Thermally Broken Bolt on Balconies Introduction What is a thermally broken bolt on balcony? Introduction Regardless of who you are, where you live or what you do, the world is going green like never before and everyone has a part to play. With such a need to reduce the amount of energy that we are using, there has never been more emphasis placed on conserving the amount of fuel and power used within buildings then there is now. Insulá are world leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke metal work, specialising in ThermConX thermal break connections and thermally brocken bolt on balcony systems. Insulá are proud to introduce the first ever range of thermally broken bolt on balconies designed specifically to be manufactured to specification off site and then attached to the building at a later date in the build schedule, when all of the scaffolding has been removed. What is a thermally broken bolt on balcony? The Modular System Our modular systems allows us to attach thermally broken bolt on balcony systems to buildings without the need for scaffolding. The system is comprised of a first and a second fix attachment. 1st Fix A specially manufactured sub frame comprised of a thermal break connection, a stub connection & a strap connection are built into the structure of the building, leaving a connection point in the insulated cavity. 2nd Fix This stage takes place when the structure is at the point where the mainframe is completed and the balconies can be safely installed. A completed bolt on balcony is delivered to site and attached to the first fix connection points quickly and efficiently, by our team of highly skilled engineers with the use of our specialist access equipment. Advantages of the Modular System It keeps time on site to an absolute minimum and ensures no risk of damage to external items as the building is being erected. It allows for structural connections to be made between the internal floor slab and the external balcony chassis, without interrupting the continuous thermal insulation of the building. It comes complete with all necessary ThermConX thermal break connections to ensure compliance with all thermal bridging regulations. It is available in a wide range of styles and sizes to suit all architects design and threshold details. It suits all methods of construction from brick and block and wind post through to cast in situ & timber frame. It allows all balcony systems to be manufactured and stored off site. Our Specialist Access Equipment Insulá s range of thermally broken bolt on balconies are modulised balcony systems designed to eliminate thermal bridging. They allow structural connections to be made between external balconies and the internal floor slab, without compromising the continuous thermal insulation of the building. Completely negates the requirement for scaffolding to install external items. Allows for numerous items to be attached in a single day in all weather conditions. Has a footprint of just 1m 2, making it ideal for tight sites where space is at a premium.

3 Thermally Broken Bolt on Balconies Balcony Types What makes the bolt on balcony system different? What type of balconies do you supply? We supply Juliette, Access & Walk on balcony systems, all available in a wide range of styles and designs to suit all tastes & design detail. Juliette Balconies Are available in a range of styles to compliment the access and walk on balcony systems that we supply. Access Balconies Are generally used to provide a means by which service persons (ie window cleaners) can safely access and clean the outside of otherwise awkwardly positioned windows or doors. Aside from this purpose, Access balconies also enable a touch of the outside to be bought inside, making them perfect for hot summer nights and long summer days. Walk on Balconies Are available in a range of modern and contemporary styles and can be designed to suit any specification and projection from the building. Because we are able to supply all types of balconies, it is possible to have the same design detail following through all types of balconies on the same development. This allows for aesthetically pleasing and balanced design detail. What makes the bolt on balcony system different? Aside from the unique nature of how the bolt on balcony system works and can be incorporated within all types of construction, there are also other unique features that come as standard: Drainage system All of our balcony systems come supplied with an in built drainage system. The system involves insetting the timber decking into the balcony chassis so that it rests 5mm above the chassis frame. A plastic drip tray is then set underneath the decking to channel any spillages to an outlet pipe mounted to the side of the balcony chassis. This system is essential as it ensures that any water which may find its way on to the balcony floor (via rainwater or spillages) is safely and discreetly chanelled away from the balcony. Anchor Points All of our balcony systems have the option of attached anchor points. Anchor points provide a safe and secure means by which service persons (ie cleaners) are able to securely attach themselves to ensure no risk of accident whilst working at heights. Undertrays Undertrays offer an aesthetically pleasing finishing touch to the balcony. They are available in a range of materials and styles to suit all designs and requirements, from light weight open mesh to a solid metal or plastic panel. Undertrays also ensure that birds are unable to perch or roost in the underside of the balcony chassis and protect neighbours from any spilages etc which may occur. Thermally Broken Bolt on Balconies Eurokobra Thermal Imaging 4 Testing ThermConX thermal performance We used the EUROkobra computer program extensively in the development and testing of our thermally broken bolt on balcony system. The following diagrams show the dramatic difference between a cantilevered balcony member which bridges the insulation layer and one which does not. This thermal image shows how effectively our ThermConX halts the conduction of heat energy into and out of the building. Thermal Imaging This thermal image shows the cold bridges created by bridging the insulative cavity of the building envelope. Heat energy is conducted in to the balcony chassis via these thermal bridges and then radiated into the atmosphere. As much as 30% of the buildings total heat energy can be wasted in this way. This thermal image shows how a non-thermally broken connection reduces the temperature of the fabric of the building. This thermal image shows how solar heat energy is absorbed into the balcony floor. This heat is then conducted back into the building through the insulated cavity, causing a considerable rise in room temperature. Subsequent energy use is then required by means of air conditioning in order to cool the room down again. Room temperature of +20 degrees C. Relative humidity in the room 60%

5 Thermally Broken Bolt on Balconies Chassis & Balustrading Inset or Recessed Inset or Recessed? We supply balconies to suit all types of installation, from a simple cantilever to inset or recessed. Balcony Chassis All of our balcony chassis are designed to meet all standard types of doors and doors with side panels (see table below). A bolt on balcony in plan view with the sides abutting the floor slab. A bolt on balcony in plan view showing a simple cantilever. We are also able to offer bespoke sizes if required, to suit all sizes and design detail. For specific dimensions please contact our design department at sales@insula.ltd.uk Chassis Metalwork Typical Door Width Overall chassis width 1200 1800 1600 2200 1800 2200 2000 2400 Balustrading All our balustrading designs are based upon either a P.F.C. toes in or P.F.C. toes out system. The P.F.C. toes in system is used whenever a standard balustrading design such as structural glass is required. (See above right) The P.F.C. toes out system allows for more decorative balustrading designs such as elaborate metal post arrangements. (See above left) This system allows us to accommodate all designs of balustrading, from simple and effective to complex and elaborate. All chassis metalwork is fully welded mild steel which is hot dipped zinc galvanized to U.K.A.S. standard BS EN 1461:1999. All mild steel metalwork is zinc passivated up to 30 microns and treated with an acid primer before receiving the final coat of epoxy polyester paint finish to customer s chosen RAL colour. This combination performs the highest level of protection from corrosion with the highest quality of paint finish. All balustrade panels have weld free junctions for a clean and square profile, and all stainless steel fittings are grade 304 satin finish unless specified otherwise.

Thermally Broken Bolt on Balconies Balustrading Are there regulations regarding balustrading? 6 What regulations are there regarding balustrading? There are two main building regulations relating to balustrading on balconies. Balustrade compliance with building regulation BS6399 All of the balustrading designs we offer with our balcony range comply with the 1100mm rule and exceeds the level of loading required to meet this standard. (See table below) Type of occupancy for part of the building or structure Examples of specific use Horizontal uniformly distributed line load A uniformly distributed load applied to the infill A point load applied to part of the infill C3 areas without obstacles for moving people Stairs, landing, corridors, ramps, etc. 0.74 1.0 0.5 Not suspect for over crowding External balconies, roof edges. Pavements within building curtilage. 0.74 1.0 0.5 Building regulation approved document K2: Protection from falling This regulation sets a minimum height of 1100mm for all guarding. The guarding must be able to resist a minimum force of 0.74kn/m at the top edge. The balustrade must be able to resist a point load equivalent to 50kg through a 50mm square indent when applied to the most vulnerable point. 0.74 knm at the top most point of the balustrading Minimum height of balustrade, 1100mm Finished floor height www.insula.ltd.uk Tel: +44 (0) 1509 844

First Fix Connection Detail What Is A Stub Connection? Thermally Broken Bolt on Balconies What is a stub connection? A stub connection is a section of steel channel attached at one end to a thermal break connection which then passes through the buildings external wall, leaving a connection point on the outside of the building. What are the benefits of using stub connections? The main advantage of using stub connections is that they can be altered independently in order to accommodate any variables that may arise on site, as is so often the case. One example of this is the knock on effect created if the finished floor height (FFH) of a building is not as it should be. This creates a significant problem when it comes to attaching external items such as balconies, which must be positioned exactly flush with the floor level. When using stub connections, should an error like this occur it is possible to simply unbolt and remove the section of stub beam from within the first fix connection point(s). Then it is simply a case of re-measuring and manufacturing a new, specialist stub connection to ensure that the connection plate will once again be positioned correctly on the outer face. The pictures below show how a stub connection is incorporated within a wind post method of construction, before and after the the insulation and external wall has been erected. Before After A typical stub connector within a wind post system before the insulation and external wall have been built. Once the structure has been completed just the connection points are visible.

Thermally Broken Bolt on Balconies First Fix Connection Detail Pre-cast Concrete Construction 7 How does the First Fix system work? There are three separate elements which constitute the first fix detail of one of our ThermConX thermal break connection systems. It is essential that each element of our first fix system is installed correctly as it is this system which determines how the balcony system is attached to the structure of the building. We have a selection of first fix connection details to suit all methods of construction. Below are representations showing the slight differences between our first fix systems which allows for them to be accommodated within these varying methods of construction.
