6.CW.1A TFL CUSTOM FIREPLACES WITH MASONRY BRICK LININGS wood or gas standard INSTALLATION SPECIFICATION INTO TIMBER FRAMING The Fireplace Ltd is able to design and fabricate custom brick open masonry fires. These fireplaces are not intended for primary heating and are considered as open flame fires in the traditional sense, for aesthetic and entertaining purposes only. A Custom Brick Open Masonry Fire installed to the wood fire specification, may be converted to a gas fired one at a later date, without any change to the fires installation requirements into timber framing. Performance tests on TFL Masonry fires are in accordance with AS/NZS2918:2001 Appendix B and as tested by John Yolland and Associates, Consulting Engineers Test report 02/10. WoodGas6CW - 11/2012
Firebox installation 6.CW.2B FIG. 1.1 Please Note: Each firebox may have differing external / internal dimensions, depending on the design and use. However, some clearance spacing s shown are generic and typical to every installation. Flue Inner/Outer (Size as determined) 75mm Hebel Block Heat Cell abutting timber framing. The Hebel heat cell is to terminate a minimum of 150mm above the top of the gather flue spigot. Rockwool to be placed between the hebel Block Margin Lintel on the top of the steel firebox Internal brick lining to suit. NOTE Bricks are to be spaced off the sides and rear of the firebox by a minimum of 5mm to allow for expansion and contraction. 100mm min. 50mm air gap to the sides and rear of the firebox and the hebel Heat Cell The front floor protector must be to the dimensions as shown in Table A 2 x 80mm dia air vents from outside to vent through the middle of the Hebel floor. Where the fire is not positioned near an outside wall or where the house floor has no under floor ventilation to draw from, please consult The Fireplace for possible alternative solutions. ALL Installations Must COMPLY WITH NZS2918:2001 The Fireplace Ltd recommends all installations be carried out by an SFAIT Accredited installer technician
TRIM OUT DIMENSIONS For wood Fires 6.CW.3C Custom steel fireboxes incorporate integral gathers as part of the overall fabrication and therefore will require higher openings in the frame-out to enable the firebox to be slid into place. The following are the dimensional frame-out requirements to accept custom steel fireboxes. W Overall firebox width +250mm (min). H D Overall firebox height at the top of the gather spigot +150mm (min). Overall depth of the firebox base + 125mm (min). The internal walls and rear framing surfaces are to be lined with 75mm Hebel Block. MARGIN LINTEL AND MARGIN LEGS All front nogs to be installed on edge H FIG. 1.2 Air Vents Each firebox has a shelf above the firebox opening to which the gather is attached and welded in place. This shelf can support the Margin Lintel which is to extend the full width of the opening and to a height 150mm above the top of the flue spigot. Rockwool or similar must be placed between the Hebel Lintel and the firebox to cater for any heat expansion. Where an internal wall board or plastered or painted finish is required around the fire opening, ensure allowance is made to place heat resistant board (eg. 12mm Supalux) to cover the Hebel Margin Lintel and Legs. Directly touching the firebox with any board or plaster finish may cause cracking from heat expansion and a 2mm minimum space away from the firebox is recommended. Please note: Some small changes to framing depths from the finished wall surface may be required, depending on the type of heat resistant board used. Bond Hebel blocks together using approved Hebel adhesive or Gorilla Grip or similar (non-solvent based) and secure with screws for added strength where appropriate. Air Gap under firebox 25mm FIG. 1.3 Air Vent W Fireplace opening width & Height D 150 Hebel Top Lintel Timber Framing Hebel heat cell 50mm Air Gap Brick Masonry Lining 75mm min Hebel Block or 100mm Concrete Firebox base and floor protector sizes - for wood fires The underlying base of a wood fire must be seated on 75mm thick Hebel Block or 100mm concrete as a minimum. The projecting floor protector must also be constructed similarly. The Floor Protector (Hearth) projection into the room must be to the following projections and at least 100mm either side of the firebox opening. The base and floor protector must be adequately supported with suitable timber framing where applicable. Table A Projection B Opening Width FIG mm For firebox opening widths up to 600mm 400mm For firebox opening widths 605mm to 700mm 450mm For firebox opening widths 705mm to 850mm 100 min. 750mm For firebox openings 855mm to 1200mm B 850mm - For firebox openings greater than 1205mm 100 min.
Firebox installation 6.CW.4D 1. Locate Hebel Block firebox floor base in trim out cavity. If on a concrete floor, put down a mortar screed to the underside of the Hebel. If on a wooden floor, screw or dynabolt in place. 2. Locate Hebel side walls and rear wall. Fix to timber framing. 3. Locate 2 x 80mm floor vents in floor base ensuring air is from the outside. Vermin proof vent holes. 4. Slide in integral firebox/gather and space off correctly from the Hebel Block. Dynabolt in place, ensuring air vents are unobstructed and alignment and level is correct. Note: Some prior adjustments maybe necessary to framing depth to ensure finished wall levels are achieved. 5. Place front top Hebel lintel in place ensuring it is sitting on a compressed bed of Rockwool. Glue and screw Hebel lintel to sides of Hebel walls. Ensure the minimum correct top clearance of 150mm from the top of the flue spigot to the top of the Hebel Heat Cell is achieved. 6. Install flue system. 7. Install brick masonry to the required design and shape. 150(min) 80o 75 Hebel 50mm Air Gap Fire Grate 80o Flue Spigot with outer flue supports Gather FIG. 1.6 Rockwool under Hebel Lintel Internal Brick Support Steel Firebox Masonry Brick Lining Floor Protector Projection Refer Table A 25mm Air Gap 75mm Hebel or 100mm Concrete Angle spacers welded to the underside of the firebox base Floor Level FIG. 1.5 Angle spacers welded to back of firebox o Airvent Angle spacers welded to the underside of the firebox base. 80o Airvent Firebox
Flue installation 6.CW.5E 1. Install first length of flue pipe crimped end down, inside gather collar. Rivet flue pipe in 3 places around gather collar. Place bottom flue spider bracket around gather flue pipe collar, secure in position by tightening up coach bolt/screw (supplied). If the flue spigot has outer flue locator bars, a spider will not be required, but a flue spacer will be. 2. Install second length of the flue pipe crimped end down and fix by riveting in at least 3 places around the flue pipe joint. 3. Install first length of the flue pipe casing by positioning on installed bottom flue spider bracket crimped end up. 4. Position flue spacer at the flue pipe joint. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 to the required flue height. As per ASNZS2918: a. the flue pipe shall extend not less than 4.6m above the top floor protector. b. the minimum height of the flue system within 3m distance from the highest point of the roof shall be 600mm above that point. 6. The last length of flue pipe needs to extend past the flue pipe casing by at least 150mm or flush with the top of the casing cover spigot when fitted - sizing / measuring and cutting down should be carried out prior to the flue pipe casing being fitted over the flue pipe. 7. Before fitting casing cover, place the spider in opposition with the spider post facing down between the flue pipe and flue pipe casing. Secure spider in position. Place the casing cover over the flue pipe, press down firmly onto the spider. Check airway around the casing cover is clear, then secure in position using three stainless steel rivets. 8. Fit cowl to top of flue - DO NOT RIVET IN POSITION. In high wind areas, it is recommended that the cowl be secured in position with stainless steel self tapping screw, this will enable the cowl to be removed for cleaning. Discuss Bird Proofing needs with your installer. N.B. In extreme wind areas it may be necessary to consult The Fireplace Ltd or your local agent for further technical assistance. 9. If flue is concealed in a chase, allow for air vents (2 x 80mm dia. or equivalent) at the highest possible point on the chimney chase or alternatively, allow a min 25min air space between the casing cover spigot and the outer casing. Refer to Fig. 1.8, 1.9 and 1.10 NOTE: A minimum 25mm clearance from flue pipe casing to combustible material must be maintained.
