MCC s Student GUIDE To The Disney College Program Revised: 2/15/12 1

Dear MCC student, We at Monroe Community College are excited that you wish to be considered for the Disney College Internship Program and think it is well worth your pursuit. MCC is a top recruiter for the Disney College Program. Since 1982, when Walt Disney College Program representatives began visiting our campus, the college has had hundreds of students participate in this truly unique Living, Learning and Earning, work-study internship away from home. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and one that MCC feels can very significantly contribute to a student s development and sense of self. This experience may also prove to confirm the career choice that s right for you at a crucial point in your life. The Disney College Program is for quality individuals in all areas of study at MCC. Students selected have the option to participate in the program at Walt Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in Anaheim, California for either four or six months, in either fall or spring, working, attending classes, enjoying many recreational and social activities, and then returning to MCC afterwards to complete the requirements for their degree. Credit is available for this experience and is commonly applied to the general elective area of the curriculum major in which a student is matriculated here at MCC. We at Monroe Community College are proud of our affiliation with the Disney College Program. Cordially, Bill Sigismond Bill Sigismond, Director MCC Disney Advisor 2

ABOUT THE PROGRAM The DISNEY COLLEGE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM is an exciting opportunity for students of all majors and backgrounds. It is a paid internship that will stand out on a resume. Below is a list of programs from which students commonly apply. DISNEY S SELECTION PROCESS Interested students must apply on line. Before applying, however, you are strongly urged to contact the MCC Disney office at 292-3219 for details about the program and on line at www.disneycollegprogram.com. Once you have decided to apply, take the following steps: 1) Apply online @ disneycollegeprogram.com (click on APPLY). 2) Disney will notify you by e-mail as to what your next steps are. There will be two: First, you will be required to respond to several questions successfully (what would you do?) under a variety of circumstances. Secondly, you may be as a result of your responses granted a telephone interview. 3) Disney will notify you if you are accepted into the program. 3

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DISNEY COLLEGE PROGRAM What is the College Program? The Disney College Program is a paid internship involving a unique Living, Learning, and Earning experience at either Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in California. You will earn six (6) elective credits for successful completion of the internship. It is an exciting opportunity for students of all majors and backgrounds. While at Disney, you will live in company sponsored housing, a 24 hour gated apartment complex in a multicultural community. The rent varies depending on the number of students living in an apartment. Currently, the weekly rental fee ranges from $80-102 (subject to change). Cast members who are under the age of 21 will automatically be assigned to Wellness Apartments (dry, no alcohol). All others will be in Non-Wellness apartments unless you request otherwise, The number of bedrooms in an apartment run from one (2 people) to four (8 people). You will work in an hourly position at one of the Disney theme parks, water parks or resorts. Disney also makes available to students, college level courses. Here are the current offerings: - Organizational Leadership - Advanced Studies in Hospitality Management - Corporate Communications - Creative and Innovation - Human Resource Management - Marketing U - Corporate Analysis - Experiential Learning - Interactive Learning Program What are the ACADEMIC requirements to participant in the Program? MCC Academic requirements to participate in the Disney College Internship Program: 1. You must have ATTENDED MCC at least one semester as a full-time student for that semester. 2. Your CUMULATIVE GPA MUST Be at least 2.0 by the time you leave for Florida or California. (a 1.999 is not acceptable). 3. In the semester prior to participation in the College Program, you must be registered for...and passing at least TWO academic COURSES (excluding TRS courses) with a C or better grade. 4

Disney s Requirements to participate in the Disney College Internship Program 1. Meet your college s academic requirements 2. Be enrolled in college courses as a full or part time student. 3. The College Program may not serve as your first semester in college. 4. Be at least 18 years of age. 5. Possess unrestricted work authorization. Will I have a personal interview? NO. Disney will first arrange a computer based testing session for you; if you pass, they ll then schedule you for a phone interview. How many hours a week will I be working while at Disney? You are guaranteed 30 hrs. a week but may be asked to work as many as 45 hrs. when your class is in session, and be available days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Days include early morning and evenings and may include after midnight hours. During peak times, you will be required to work as many as 60 hrs. per week (when classes are not in session). You can, however, elect to work hours beyond the imposed cap. You can check the EXTRA HOURS HOTLINE for additional shifts in your work location or in other areas, or even different roles. The hourly rate will depend on whether the hours are straight time or overtime. 5

Will I receive credit? YES. While at Disney, you will be required to participate in an MCC Internship (CE255-001). Upon successful completion of the internship, you will receive a grade and six (6) elective credits. You will need to pay for the six credits at MCC before you leave for Florida or California. Will I be a full-time student while on the College Internship Program in Florida or California? YOU COULD BE, (but it is not advisable). To be full time means that you would be enrolled in courses totaling twelve (12) credit hours. This would involve your taking an additional six (6) credit hours while at Disney. In addition to the MCC internship requirements (six credit hours), some students in the past have taken additional courses either through MCC on-line or Disney s College Program courses, thus making them full time. This, unfortunately, has not worked out for some students because of the demands of their internship responsibilities. If I am not accepted the first time I apply to Disney, may I apply again? YES. A student may apply immediately when the next recruiting season begins. What expenses will I incur while at Disney? Starting from the time you leave home, you will be responsible for all expenses that you incur (transportation to Disney, housing, food, entertainment, etc.) You will earn from $7.00 $9.00 an hour (subject to change) at your internship job. While the pay is modest, you will be given perks such as free admission into the parks, discounts on food and merchandise you buy while in the parks. Because of your Disney status, some Orlando merchants will offer discounts to you as well. 6

What are my responsibilities once I am accepted into the program? Once you interview and have been accepted into the WDW College Program, you then have the responsibility to take positive steps to participate in your internship. Be serious and sincere about your commitment to participate in the program before you apply. If your circumstances change and you cannot participate, please go on-line and decline the offer. If you decline, it is one less student from MCC who will have had the opportunity to participate in the Disney Program. (Are you L I S T E N I N G to what this IMPORTANT MESSAGE SAYS?) What are my chances of being accepted? HARD TO SAY. A lot depends upon Disney s needs during each recruiting season. Generally, if you are a strong candidate as determined by the Disney Recruiting Team, (on-line question survey and phone interview) AND are sincere about going to Disney AND meet MCC s academic requirements your chances of being made an offer are good. Will I lose a semester if I participate in the WDW college program? PROBABLY. You will be away from the college while participating in the Internship. However, you may take MCC on-line courses while on the program or take additional courses at MCC during the semester following your return to the college or in summer school. Will I receive financial aid if I participate in the Disney College Program? POSSIBLY. The six elective credits you receive for successfully completing the Disney Program must fit into your MCC degree program. Is there a summer program? Currently there is no Disney College Program in the summer for first-time applicants. When will I receive an answer regarding my acceptance into the Disney Program? Generally, within two to three weeks following your telephone interview, you will be notified by Disney via email. 7

Is Housing Available to students who participate in the Disney College Program? YES. One to four (1-4) bedroom apartments are available at three different locations and your rent is payroll deducted. If I am accepted into the Disney College Program, can I be a Character Performer? YES. Students majoring in Performing Arts, Theatre or Show Production or who display desired natural talents are the greatest opportunity at an audition for a costumed character role. Rochester is sometimes an audition location. If I decide to do the Disney Internship, will I go to Florida or California? YOUR CHOICE! The Disney College Program now has opportunities at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida and at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Can my parents accompany me to Florida or California on my arrival date? There is limited activity for a parent who arrives with his/her son or daughter at check -in time. Parents will be given an opportunity to tour the housing area and to visit an apartment and to ask questions. There is a Disney website for parents that will provide background information on the Disney College Program. It is located at www.disneycollegeprogram.com; Click on: Walt Disney World: then click on Family Members (top of the screen). Students will be assigned housing and then travel by bus to the Casting Office for more orientation. Parents will not have the opportunity to reunite with them until later in the day. Could I become an MCC campus Rep after returning from Florida or California? Yes. You are welcome to become part of MCC s Campus Rep Team. As a Disney College Program Rep, you have the opportunity to promote awareness and support for the Program. You can earn reward points offered by Disney for such activities. The rewards in the past have included VISA gift cards, trips, merchandise, etc. You will be eligible for complimentary admission to Walt Disney World theme parks and restaurant discounts. Visit the Disney Website for more information. You must apply on-line while you are in Florida and/or California for the semester at MCC when you return. 8
