It s Smart with Less Waste Website In 2008: 406 000 downloaded pages, 80 % of the downloads at the site which were aimed towards the teaching sector User surveys 2008 and 2010 Sari Kemppainen/ Waste Management 11-12-07 27

Cooperation Cooperation with several organisations, examples: EU level HSY participated in the workshop organised by the European Commission in October 2009, which collected information and examples for a handbook on waste prevention at source HSY participated in the cooperation meetings organised by the ELY centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment), in conjunction with the waste plan for Southern and Western Finland until 2020. Climate Info, started 2010, coordinated by the Environment Centre of the City of Helsinki, HSY is one of the main partners RCE (Regional Centres of Expertise) Espoo network, started 2011, the central theme is sustainable development education, HSY is a partner Sari Kemppainen/ Waste Management 11-12-07 28

Measuring the Effectiveness Results The actual amount of unsorted waste per inhabitant (target was set at 172 kg per inhabitant) year 2007 2008 2009 2010 kg/inhabitant 174 172 170 168 The share of those who sought information concerning reasonable consumption or reduction of the waste amount year 2009 2010 % of respondents 17 16 Better indicators, which would help to evaluate the actions in an easier and more reliable way, are however required to measure the results of the waste prevention at source. Sari Kemppainen/ Waste Management 11-12-07 29

Total Household Waste 2004-08 Sari Kemppainen/ Waste Management 11-12-07 30

Conclusions from the project The project (JESSE 2008-2010) achieved numerous successes By accessing those forums in which the potential customers already are, savings can be made in marketing. An effective example was the Kotikokki service utilised in the project. The experiences from the food waste project were encouraging. Food waste proved to be a topical theme. HSY s study on food waste in Finland was groundbreaking and served as a stimulant for the work of other operators. Cooperation with cities expanded further Methods were developed further. The Dismantle the Waste Bomb workshop successfully utilises electronic media and interactive methods. And challenges Measuring of the waste minimization needs new tools Genuine cooperation is not always granted Sari Kemppainen/ Waste Management 11-12-07 31
