Learn. play. Explore. Camp fuller

Dear Campers and Parents I am so glad that you are considering spending time with us at Camp Fuller. Our camp on Rhode Island s beautiful southern shore is a magical place that allows young people to explore both water and land-based opportunities. For over 125 years, young men and women have experienced new activities, participated in exciting adventures, and made lasting friends in a safe and nurturing environment. Our veteran staff loves Camp Fuller as much as our campers. They return each year to insure that campers enjoy every opportunity offered. Moreover, all of us at Camp Fuller and the YMCA of Greater Providence believe that all children and teens deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. I am excited to say that every day campers enjoy new experiences and build new relationships that develop better skills, stronger values and positive lifelong behaviors. If you have questions about any aspect of Camp Fuller, please don t hesitate to contact me. I welcome the opportunity to tell you about all the things that make this camp so special. I look forward to seeing all of you this summer! Best, Peter M. Swain Executive Director 800-521-1470 pswain@gpymca.org We had so much fun. Can t wait to come back next year. Experience Camp Fuller Camp Fuller is a residential summer camp for boys and girls ages 7-16. Located on Point Judith Pond in Wakefield, Rhode Island, the camp s 64 acres of shore and woodlands provide the perfect environment for both water activities and land-based adventures. Since 1887 campers have spent summers on our shores. They come from places near and far to learn, play, explore and have fun, and they leave enriched with new friends and lasting memories. Whether a first-time or seasoned camper, the two week and/or four week session is the best way to experience all Camp Fuller has to offer. Strong friendships are cemented, and campers can participate in more activities in the longer time-frame. Come experience Camp Fuller. We welcome you to visit the camp on one of our Open House dates listed on the enclosed insert. We re confident you ll find it to be the perfect camp experience. 3

4 5 Life at Camp Fuller Leaving home for the camp experience can be intimating for first-time campers: will I fit in, will I like my fellow campers, the food and the activities? Not to worry our experienced camp counselors make sure everyone settles in and is comfortable with their cabin, bunkmates, the food and the camp schedule. The camp population is divided into four divisions: two for boys and two for girls. Campers live with staff counselors in cabins assigned by age. There are seven-to-nine cabins each with eight campers and two staff members. Camp Fuller allows campers to select activities that excite and interest them. In fact, counselors encourage campers to try something new in addition to their old favorites. Once chosen, activities and learning opportunities make up a full day s schedule. Camp parents should know that the health and wellness of every camper is supported by an on-site health director and licensed nurse. In case of emergency, Camp Fuller has a strong relationship with a local clinic along with quick access to nearby South County Hospital. Canoeing Kayaking Marine Biology Paddle Boarding Swimming Water skiing Windsurfing GETTING WET Sailing Learning to windsurf was the coolest thing ever! Camp Fuller is one of very few camps located on the Atlantic Ocean and offers numerous water-based activities for all ages. I got to try so many awesome new things.

6 Archery 7 Arts & Crafts Basketball Chess Climbing tower STAYING DRY Dance Gardening High ropes Mountain Biking Specialty Camps Camp Fuller sets aside one week in August to present six specialty camps to campers from 10 16. (See enclosed insert for dates.) These programs offer campers a more indepth learning experience in areas of special interest while still enjoying traditional camp activities. SeaQuest Marine Studies: Ages 10-16 Explore and study the marine habitats of Point Judith Pond. Using our marine study boat, sample fish populations with seine nets, investigate the inhabitants of a salt marsh and explore the tide pools in the Harbor of Refuge. Perfect for anyone interested in science. Point Judith Sailing: Ages 10-16 One of the top sailing programs on the East Coast. Our experienced staff offers small group instruction and outstanding leadership with a variety of challenges for sailors of all skill levels. Courses for beginning to advanced sailing and seamanship are available. Climbing is fun and challenging. I had to keep focused! Music Outdoor Skills Photography Rocketry Skateboarding Soccer Volleyball I m glad I signed up for sailing. It was a great experience! Yoga

8 9 White water rafting was the most exciting activity of all. On The Edge: Ages 13-16 Depart from the traditional summer camp activities with a different outdoor adventure every day. Explore exciting activities like the Rhode Island Rock Gym, white water rafting in Massachusetts and zip-lining. Be sure to sign up for these challenging trips early because space is limited. Camp fuller staff The staff at Camp Fuller is an integral part of running dayto-day operations. Many are veteran staffers, returning to camp year after year. They have the training, experience, know-how, sensitivity and passion to make camp special for every camper. Some of our directors, who provide leadership and direction to campers and camp staff, were once campers themselves. They have an appreciation for just how important it is that everyone enjoys their camp experience. A health director, food service director, and other onsite directors provide supervision and help maintain all necessary health and safety standards. Specialty Camps Open-water SCUBA: Ages 12-16 Take the first step in learning the snorkeling and scuba techniques of the PADI Open Water Dive course. We will teach you the basics and give you a head start toward successfully completing the written and practical parts of the PADI exam. Space is limited. Medical restrictions may apply. Advanced SCUBA: Ages 14-16 Now that you have your scuba certification, let s go diving! Practice advanced skills including underwater navigation, deep dives to sixty feet and lower as well as night diving. Current open-water certification is required. Space is limited. Medical restrictions may apply. Leaders in Training: Ages 14-15 Campers will participate in immersive hands-on workshops that include team building games and challenges, lectures with key staff members and opportunities to shadow Senior Counselors and Program Directors to get a feel for working at camp. Participants will work as a co-educational group on a Camp Improvement Project, and plan and implement an all-camp activity for the last night of the session. This specialized program is intended for campers who are serious about becoming an LD and/or CIT at Camp Fuller. I get to help create memories to last a lifetime.

10 I plan to be friends with the people I met forever! Leadership Development Programs Young adults have the opportunity to learn and grow into future Camp Fuller counselors and staff members. Speak to a current member of the Camp Fuller staff if interested. Additional information Financial Assistance With the generous support of our many donors, Camp Fuller strives to make camp available to all youth and teens even if they are not able to pay some or all of the camp fees. Financial assistance may be offered to anyone who can demonstrate a verifiable need. Please contact us for more information, or visit our website for an application. Meeting the Standard Camp Fuller is accredited by the American Camp Association, the only independent accrediting organization in the country that reviews camping operations against strict quality standards.
