The Mission and Purpose of HOPE Our Mission: Our mission is to provide faith-based support for those touched by addiction. Our Purpose: To provide education to the public about the disease of addiction, the consequences of untreated addiction, and the process of recovery. To dispel myths about addiction and the addict by sharing stories of recovery and by celebrating the success of recovery. To reduce stigmas associated with addiction. To identify and disseminate resources providing recovery support services for those in need. 1

Introduction HOPE..a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. We all hope for things in life: a new position at work, the chance to drive a sports car, good weather for an event, etc. Some people hope for help. There are members of our church community who are affected by addiction. They have searched for help with their addiction or help with their family member or friend s addiction or help to know where to go. They were hurt, they were embarrassed, they did not know which way to turn, they stumbled. We had enough! An addiction destroys families as much as it destroys individuals. Although, family, friends and coworkers may not be addicted themselves, their lives are greatly affected by the addictive behavior of a loved one and they too need support, advice and the opportunity to share and learn. This need has led to the birth of the H.O.P.E. Initiative. The Hope Initiative is a team of caring individuals wanting to help those affected by addiction get the help they need. Nowhere in Schuylkill County, PA can you find the support that you will find with us. It is our hope that this booklet helps those in need find the right path. 2

Signs to Look For It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction as early as possible. If you are worried that a friend of family member might be addicted, here are some of the warning signs to look for: Missing work or school Valuables disappearing Deterioration of physical appearance Changes in relationships, friends, favorite hangouts, hobbies, etc. Changes in appetite or sleep patterns Unusual or unexplained need for money or financial problems Change in personality or attitude Periods of unusual hyperactivity or agitation Lack of motivation; inability to focus Sudden weight loss or gain Demanding privacy Change in family beliefs and values 3
