2 What is an Addiction? Addiction is a predictable, progressive and chronic disease. A chemical addiction (drug and or alcohol) is characterized by tolerance, psychological and physical dependence Natl. council on Alcoholism. 3 What is the difference between an addicted person and a frequent user? Addiction is often characterized by preoccupation due to chemical changes in brain functioning. Addiction typically has harmful consequences, such as DUI and other legal problems, loss of control, loss of job, relationship difficulties, etc. An addicted person has lost the ability to choose and experiences loss of control.

4 What is an intervention? An intervention is a systematic method of interfering with the progressive use and abuse of alcohol or other mood altering drugs. An intervention is an effective technique that families can utilize in helping a loved one suffering from chemical dependency or other addictions. Intervention is powerful step for a family can to take in initiating the recovery process of the addicted family member. Who participates in the intervention? Spouse, family members, significant others, sometimes the employer, and the counselor

5 What is the role of Transforming Life Counseling Center? TLCC assesses the individual to determine the depth of the problem and the level of care necessary for successful healing; inpatient, outpatient, or other types of treatment and support. Educate, support, and assist in the recovery for the family of the addicted individual. TLCC therapists are trained to address the family issues caused by addiction and abuse. Education for Pastoral Staff TLCC staff are available for training church staff to recognize potential problems of addiction and how to refer the addicted individual and families for treatment.

6 What is the cost? Cost is based upon an hourly rate of the counselor. Average intervention is 4 6 hours. At times two counselors are used during the intervention. Follow up counseling sessions for the addicted individual either individual counseling or group counseling is strongly recommended. Family counseling is helpful for successful healing and assisting the family of the addicted loved one. Discounted hourly fees are available for church members. TLCC provides trained interventionists and licensed counselors.

7 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Is Alcoholics Anonymous the same as treatment? NO, AA is an important support program of non professionals designed to help support recovery, not treat addiction. What happens after intervention? If necessary TLCC will help identify early on in the process a treatment facility (inpatient). TLCC will continue to work with the family and access other resources to help the family to recover. What happens after treatment? TLCC will work with the addicted individual following the intensive phase of treatment to provide aftercare counseling. TLCC will work directly with the treatment facility (inpatient) weekly and during the discharge planning phase to ensure quality care for the addicted individual.
