Emergency Response System 1
Given the choice, most seniors and persons with medical conditions or physical challenges would prefer to live in their own homes and be as independent as they can. That's not always possible. For many, this dream can become a reality with the addition of a reliable, easy-to-use communications device. Your Emergency Response System connects to your home telephone line and automatically places a call for help when you signal for assistance, any time of the day or night whether or not you can reach the telephone. Family, neighbours, or medical personnel whom you pre-designate are notified immediately, so they can respond. This medical alert system has proven dependable enough to meet some very tough standards. It is listed by Underwriters Laboratories as a home healthcare signaling device. The heart of this system is the console itself, which is designed for tabletop use and is ideal for bedside placement. It features: a centrally located EMERGENCY button that can activate the alarm in the same manner as the personal pendant transmitters a CLEAR/RESET button, which cancels alarms or resets the system following an alarm. During an alarm, the console sounds a loud signal and also dials the monitoring station to alert them of the emergency. During a power outage, a back-up battery will keep the unit functioning for up to 8 hours. The system is dependent on a working phone line. If the phone line is down or not functioning, the unit cannot transmit any signals. 2
The Emergency Response System Many people on their own worry about what they should do, or maybe who they could call for help in a hurry. The Emergency Response System offers comfort to someone on his/her own. It provides a complete sense of independence. The Emergency Response System offers: Portable freedom in your own home. Versatility to be placed anywhere versus a fixed button or hardware. Twenty-four hours a day/365 days a year monitoring response service. Experienced personnel available at all times to respond to your needs. Pendant that is small and light as well as waterproof Flexibility a person may request an unlimited number of responders, or as few as one. Backup battery in case of power failure. 3
Please note: If the telephone lines are not working for whatever reason, the ERS will not work. It is dependant on a working phone line. If the back-up battery becomes fully drained (due to extended periods of no power to the unit), the system will squeal uncontrollably. Please contact the HHHS Community Support Services Division office at 457-2941. Please be aware that if you have a pet, there is a possibility that the animal may activate an emergency signal by stepping on the base unit. Please be sure to have the unit protected and placed somewhere that pets will not have access to it. The Emergency Response System is a reporting device at best and is intended and serves only as an aid and not as a preventative measure to an accident, sudden illness, crime of burglary or a fire. Your Emergency Response System automatically tests the communication to the monitoring station weekly. We Highly Recommend: Plug your unit into an outlet that is not controlled by a light switch. That you don't use a power bar for the Care Guard Units Not to use a phone splitter with the unit Not to hook up answering machines or internet connections on the same jack as the unit or through the unit. If you are in need of medical assistance, and are able, please call 911 for help. 4

The transmitter pendant can be worn around the neck or around the wrist. When this button is pressed, the base unit immediately signals the Monitoring Centre. The monitoring station will call back to your home by either using the two way voice feature on your unit or by normal phone contact. If you do not respond, they will move on to the Contact List you have provided or call Emergency Services. This transmitter pendant is the solution to all kinds of problems facing people living alone. The waterproof sensor/button can be worn as a wristband or as a pendant. It is strongly recommended to wear your sensor/button at at all times especially in the bath or shower. In the event you do not respond when summoned and an actual emergency is determined, the monitoring center will summon help from the appropriate local emergency response agency, such as the fire department, or paramedics. 6
Important - Please Read Should you be leaving your home for more than 8 hours at a time, we recommend that you leave the button at home. Your Emergency Response button communicates with the base unit/panel regularly. If you are gone for a long period of time a signal may be sent to the monitoring station indicating that there may be a problem with your button.
