RADIANTGRID PLATFORM INSTALLATION PREREQUISITES Revision 1.3 2012--03--30 [w] http://www.radiantgrid.com [e] info@radiantgrid.com 2012 RADIANTGRID TECHNOLOGIES, LLC A WOHLER TECHNOLOGIES COMPANY
2 1. SERVER CONFIGURATION RadiantMachine Hardware / Software Requirements (Applies to all RadiantMachine nodes, including stand-alone systems running RadiantManager and RadiantMachine services on same physical server) Intel Xeon X5600/E5600/L5600/Core i7 Series Dual, quad-core or hex-core CPU 2.93 Ghz (minimum) 24GB RAM (minimum) Mirrored system drive (SAS or SATA) o NOTE: SAS may be more reliable than SATA under long-term use. Local RAID or dedicated NAS/SAN for media storage (StorNext preferred) 1Gbps or 10Gbps (recommended) Ethernet NIC or SAN attached for external storage. RadiantManager Hardware / Software Requirements (Applies to RadiantManager-only node, when not running RadiantMachine services on same physical server) Intel Xeon X5600/E5600/L5600/Core i7 Series Dual, quad-core or hex-core CPU 2.2 Ghz (minimum) 8GB RAM (minimum) Mirrored system drive (SATA or SAS) o NOTE: SAS may be more reliable than SATA under long-term use. Local RAID or dedicated NAS/SAN for media storage (StorNext preferred) 1Gbps or 10Gbps (recommended) Ethernet NIC or SAN attached for external storage. Required Software: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 (required on all servers) RadiantManager ships with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 x64 Express o Customer may opt to provide Microsoft SQL Server 2008 x64 (Standard or Enterprise) if preferred, but is typically not necessary for most installations. Optional GPU (optional for transcoding, required for Cinnafilm options): nvidia Tesla series (specific recommendations require further discussion depending on requirements) 2. PLAN YOUR DEPLOYMENT RadiantGrid is highly configurable to your workflow, your storage environment and to your performance requirements. When planning a deployment, you may
3 wish to start with a simple deployment to build familiarity with the product and to validate critical functions. Example of a Minimal One-Server Test Deployment The simplest deployment of RadiantGrid requires a single server to act as both the manager and machine node. All activities of the transcoding workflow are conducted on a single machine. While this is a supported configuration, it is only recommended for testing purposes. 4 SQL Server Configuration (SQL) Operating System: Windows 2008 R2 Standard Server Primary Role: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2008 R2 Express 3. INSTALL AND CONFIGURE OS PREREQUISITES RadiantGrid is tested to run on server operating systems for the highest reliability and performance in a production environment. Where noted, "or access to internet" means that the RadiantGrid automated installers will attempt to download the missing components from the internet. If you don't have access to the internet, you should perform a manual installation. Windows Server 2008 R2 For multi-server deployments, all Windows Machines need to be on the same domain account. RadiantGrid *must* have a domain account for login and assigning to services. For single-server deployments, we'll create a local service account. Create an Administrator User with Logon as a Service Right The RadiantGrid services will run under a domain service account. Create a domain user, for example named "RadiantGrid", and add it as a member of the local server Administrators group. This user must be granted "Logon as a Service Right". For more information on granting this right, read the following article from Microsoft: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739424(ws.10).aspx If the customer doesn't have a domain, or doesn't want these servers in their domain, RadiantGrid can promote the manager server to a domain controller, but that requires access to the Windows installer DVD on the RadiantManager server. 4. INSTALL AND CONFIGURE DB PREREQUISITES Database Server Selection The RadiantGrid database is a critical component of a RadiantGrid deployment. RadiantGrid services communicate and manage the status of the transcoding workflow through the database. Production database installation, configuration
5 and management can be complex and time consuming. Before selecting a database server to support the RadiantGrid system, take into account your goals for deployment and whether you or your IT department has the expertise to manage and maintain the database. RadiantGrid will install SQL Server 2008 R2 with the setup process, unless the customer would like to use an external SQL 2008 R2 database server. In all cases, the RadiantGrid Platform requires the Full Text Searching feature. Ensure that during installation of the database server, you include this feature. The SQL database server may need to be configured to for network protocols. Using the SQL Configuration Manager enable Named Pipe and TCP/IP protocols. Database SQL 2008 R2 SQL Express 2008 R2 Installation Requirements Notes and Limitations.NET 3.5 Install Full Text Indexing Best choice for high Enable Remote availability production environments. Enable TCP/IP.NET 3.5 Install Full Text Indexing Enable Remote Enable Named Pipe Enable TCP/IP Database Security Configuration During the SQL installation process, specify mixed Windows and SQL authentication. The Database Installation and Configuration section of this guide will assume that you will be using Windows accounts and authentication for accessing databases.
