What is external storage? External storage is all addressable data storage that is not currently in the computer's main storage or memory. Synonyms are auxiliary storage and secondary storage. Whatis.com

Why use external storage? Advantages of external storage External storage devices provide additional storage other than that available in the computer. Data can be transported easily from one place to another. It is useful to store software and data that is not needed frequently. External storage also works as data back up. This back up may prove useful at times such as fire or theft because important data is not lost. Wikipedia

What types are available? Mechanical External Hard Drives An external hard drive (HDD) is a portable storage device that can be attached to a computer through a USB or FireWire connection, or wirelessly. External hard drives typically have high storage capacities and are often used to back up computers or serve as a network drive. Capacities can be as high as several terabytes. The speeds for a 7200 RPM HDD are 100 MB/s and 90 IOPS. Whatis.com Buildcomputers.net

What types are available? Optical storage devices CD CD stands for Compact Disk. The speed is much lower than that of a typical hard disk. The storage capacity is 700 MB. These are usually used for audio and similar small data files. (KB) Red laser light is used to effect the read-write process with these disks. Wikipedia

What types are available? Optical storage devices DVD DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disk or Digital Video Disk. The speed is much faster than that of a CD but not as fast as a hard disk. The storage capacity is 4.7 GB. (Approximately seven times that of a CD.) These are usually used for video and other medium sized files. (MB) Red laser light is used to effect the read-write process with these disks. Wikipedia

What types are available? Optical storage devices BLU-RAY Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a digital optical disc data storage format designed to supersede the DVD. The plastic disc is 120 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm thick, the same size as DVDs and CDs. The speed is up to 32 MB/s or 8X, as limited by the usb2 interface. The storage capacity is typically 25 GB. (Five times that of a DVD.) it is capable of storing high-definition video resolution (1080p) HD movies. Blue laser light is used to effect the read-write process with these disks. Wikipedia

What types are available? Solid State Devices Solid State Drives (SSD) An SSD is a data-storage device that serves the same basic data storage function as a hard disk drive (HDD). Most SSDs use NAND based flash drive which retains data without power.

What types are available? Solid State Devices Solid State Drives (SSD)

What types are available? Solid State Devices Solid State Drives (SSD) SSD units are currently available in sizes up to 1 TB. Prices are about 4 to 5 times those HDD units. Speeds run around 740 MB/s and 120,000 IOPS. These are mostly being used in laptops but are available in formats that can be installed in desktops or used as external portable drives.

What types are available? Solid State Devices Secure Digital (SD) Units These units are non-volatile memory cards. (Solid state devices.) Capacity: SDSC (SD): 1 MB to 2 GB SDHC: >2 GB to 32 GB SDXC: >32 GB to 2 TB Usage: Portable devices, digital cameras, handheld computers, phones, etc.

My cloud or their cloud? What is the Cloud? A remotely located (not contained in the computer) hard drive or hard drive group that is used to store electronic data such as photos, videos, documents, etc. The drives may be in one location or in several locations. The data may be accessed from any compatible device and from any compatible location. There are two types of Cloud : (Their) Public Cloud Service, and; (My) Personal Cloud Storage.

My cloud or their cloud? The choice is yours! Their Cloud: The service company provides the needed expertise. The service company manages the hard drives and the backups. Your data is stored along with other persons data on the same drives. There is usually a free base amount of storage provided. Additional space is available for a fee. Their cloud service is not physically located in your house so there are no worries about theft or other unforseen happenings.

My cloud or their cloud? The choice is yours! My Cloud: Some computer savvy is needed. Only your data is stored in the system. You have total control over all aspects of the system. Your costs are essentially a one time expense. You choose the number/size of the drives.

What devices do you want to use to access your cloud? Make sure that the software will work with each of your devices. (iphone, Windows tablet, Android smartphone, etc.) Is the system and software compatible with your computer? Windows 8.1, Mac OS X, etc. Redundancy backup mode desired. (One or two drives or more.)

Personal cloud setup Personal cloud products can cost from $150 to $300 for a 2TB drive. Although, the software for these solutions is intuitive, you definitely need to have some computer knowledge to setup and maintain them at home. If you want other family members or friends to have access to your personal cloud, you ll be responsible for setting up accounts for them.

Personal cloud setup The setup and running software and instructions are included with the hardware package or are on-line. Once you select a personal cloud solution, you ll need to install it on your home network. These are the typical steps you ll need to follow. 1. Take the NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive out of the box and attach it to your router or a network node. 2. Power it up. 3. Open the included software on your computer. You ll likely have to run installation software first.

Personal cloud setup 4. Open the program and follow the prompts to pick an IP address. You should also be able to name the drive and make a few other customizations such as adjusting the power settings. 5. Next, identify which files you want to backup to the personal cloud. This is a good time to choose how often you want your files backed up. 6. Create your login information. This is what you ll use to access your personal cloud from other devices. 7. Update your router to point external traffic looking for this resource to your storage device. This is sometimes known as port forwarding. This may not be necessary when using manufacturer s own NAS portal.

Personal cloud setup 8. Login to your personal cloud from your smartphone or tablet. (Note: Make sure there s software or apps included that will work with your devices.) Typically, your personal cloud product will include remote-access software. This is what you ll use to login to your cloud from other devices. http://www.real.com/resources/how-to-set-up-a-personal-cloud/ Please note that the process may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on the software used.
