Overview The Learning Management System (LMS) prvides functinality that can be used by faculty members and students t facilitate classrm and distance learning in the Web-based envirnment. Faculty can view curse schedules, curse descriptins, and enrlled students. They can als rganize and present curse dcuments, create and mnitr curse grups, make and grade assignments, and track attendance. Students can view their curse schedules, curse descriptins, assignments, grades, and attendance. They can als cmplete nline assignments and participate in chat grups and frums. All My Curses The All My Curses prtlet allws bth students and faculty t view current, past, and future curses, depending n the value yu select in the Shw drp-dwn list bx. If yu are nt registered fr any curse in the selected drp-dwn, the fllwing message appears: "There are n curses t display." Curses are gruped by academic terms, and maximize and minimize icns allw yu t expand (Shw) r cllapse (Hide) the list f curses assciated with each term. Each curse listing displays the fllwing: Curse Cde Curse (name) This cde is the fficial cde frm the academic catalg. The sectin number is displayed in parenthesis. This element is nly displayed n the Main Screen f the prtlet. The curse name is als a link t the Main Page (default page) f the curse cntext. Available functinality is dependent n yur security settings. Avg Schedule This link shws ne's current verall average (grade) in a curse. It brings the student t his/her Gradesheet fr that curse. This clumn lists the meeting times f the curse. JICS 6.4 3

Curse Search The Curse Search prtlet allws yu t enter search criteria fr lcating curses in the curse catalg. Yu must enter at least ne f the fllwing search parameters befre yu click the Search buttn: Curse Title, Curse Cde, Faculty Last Name, Term, and/r Curse Descriptin. If yu want the curse descriptin t display in the search results, select the Shw Curse Descriptins check bx. If n curses are fund that match the search criteria, the fllwing message appears: "There are n items t display." If curses are fund that match the search criteria: The Curse Cde, Curse Name, Faculty (name), and Schedule (meeting times) are displayed in the Search Results sectin. Clicking n a particular Curse Name link in the Search Results sectin will display the Main Page f its curse cntext if yu have access t it; therwise, the Curse Infrmatin page/prtlet will display. Clicking n the icn beside a faculty member's name pens the My Inf prtlet fr that particular faculty member. Since My Inf is a ppup windw, it may be blcked by yur brwser r tlbars like Yah and Ggle. Curse Infrmatin The Curse Infrmatin prtlet displays read-nly infrmatin fr a particular curse, including the name and term. The Faculty sectin can display a pht f the faculty member alng with an email address and ffice hurs. Clicking the icn beside the faculty name pens the My Inf prtlet fr that faculty member. Clicking the email address link pens a blank email addressed t the faculty member. The Schedule sectin displays the schedule infrmatin fr the curse sectin and includes class meeting days, start/end times fr the class perids, start/end dates f the class, and the classrm in which it will meet. The Descriptin sectin displays the descriptin f the curse t which this sectin belngs. JICS 6.4 5

Attendance Student Yu can view attendance fr a curse by clicking n the Attendance page in the curse's sidebar. Attendance Stats include the ttal number f excused, unexcused, and missed sessins and the number f minutes attended if yur instructr uses minutes t track attendance. Yur Attendance Recrd displays the date f each sessin, yur attendance status fr each sessin, and the number f minutes yu attended each sessin if yur instructr uses minutes t track attendance. Blank listings mean that yur instructr has nt yet saved the attendance fr thse days. If make-up times have been set, they are displayed at the bttm f the page. JICS 6.4 6

Gradebk Student Yu can view yur Gradesheet fr a curse by clicking n the Gradebk page in the sidebar f the respective curse. The fllwing grade infrmatin is displayed: Grade Results Overview This table displays yur verall grade in bth letter and percentage frmats and any feedback entered by the instructr. This table displays a summary f the Attendance & Other Detail scres Cursewrk Detail scres. Attendance & Other Detail This table details attendance and custm Gradebk scres. The Attendance sectin shws ttal number f sessins r minutes and number f sessins r minutes attended fr each student. The scre includes any lss f attendance credit as set in the initial Gradebk setup. The Other sectin includes a clumn fr each custm item, such as field trips, class participatin, etc. The Overall Attendance & Other is a summary f the infrmatin in the tw sectins. Cursewrk Detail This table shws a detailed view f the cursewrk assignments and their scres. Clicking the linked type/unit displays all assignments fr that type/unit. There may be ungraded items and sme items that have nt been assigned values. Clicking the View All Assignments link displays all f yur individual assignments and grades by type. Clicking the Hide All Assignments link displays nly the averaged grade fr all assignments by type r unit. JICS 6.4 7

Readings The Readings prtlet is used t display varius textbks, jurnals, and ther reading materials that are assciated with this curse. By default, this prtlet lcated n the Syllabus page f all curses. Readings can be gruped accrding t similar characteristics and identified with a set. Readings that are identified with a particular set will appear within the same categry when they are viewed. If a reading is nt assciated with a specific set, it will display within the Ungruped set that is autmatically created. The main view f the prtlet displays the Header f a set alng with maximize and minimize icns that allw yu t expand (Shw) r cllapse (Hide) the list f readings assciated with that set. Preferences Order Readings Alphabetically Frm the Readings prtlet: 1. Click the Wrench icn t custmize the prtlet. 2. Click the Preferences tab. 3. Select the Order Readings Alphabetically check bx t always have readings be displayed in alphabetical rder. Hwever, yu will nt be able t manually rder readings if this preference is selected. 4. Click the Save buttn. 5. If this is the nly setting yu want t change, click the Exit buttn. Order Sets Alphabetically Frm the Readings prtlet: Shw Empty Sets 1. Click the Wrench icn t custmize the prtlet. 2. Click the Preferences tab. 3. Select the Order Sets Alphabetically check bx t always have sets be displayed in alphabetical rder. Fr example, if this preference is nt selected and the default Ungruped set is empty, then this Set/Header will nt display. 9. Click the Save buttn. 10. If this is the nly setting yu want t change, click the Exit buttn. Functins Student The Readings prtlet allws yu t view textbks, jurnals, r ther reading materials that may be needed fr this curse. These reading materials are made available t yu by yur instructr. The readings are usually gruped, and clicking the linked title displays details abut the selected reading. Als displayed within a reading's infrmatin may be an external link t a Website related t the reading. Clicking the G t Main Screen link displays details abut all readings. Handuts (Dwnladable Versin) The Handuts prtlet is used t prvide syllabi r ther handuts that can be upladed by a faculty member and dwnladed by students. By default, this prtlet lcated n the Syllabus page f all curses. Handuts can be gruped accrding t similar characteristics and identified with a set. Handuts that are identified with a particular set will appear within the same categry when they are viewed. If a handut is nt assciated with a specific set, it will display within the Ungruped set that is autmatically created. The Main Page f the prtlet displays the Header f a set alng with maximize and minimize icns that allw yu t expand (Shw) r cllapse (Hide) the list f handuts assciated with that set. The listing fr each handut in a set includes the file type, file size, and the number f times the handut has been dwnladed. Preferences Order Handuts Alphabetically Frm the Handuts prtlet: 1. Click the Wrench icn t custmize the prtlet. 2. Click the Preferences tab. 3. Select the Order Handuts Alphabetically check bx t always have handuts be displayed in alphabetical rder. Als, if this preference is nt selected, the default Ungruped set will nt display. 9. Click the Save buttn. 10. If this is the nly setting yu want t change, click the Exit buttn. Functins Student The Dwnladable Versin r Handuts prtlet allws yu t view and/r dwnlad handuts made available t yu by yur instructr. The handuts are usually gruped, and clicking the link pens the handut. Right-clicking n the link gives yu ther ptins, such as printing, cpying, emailing, saving as, saving as a favrite, etc. 11

Curse Syllabus and Abut This Curse The Curse Syllabus and Abut This Curse prtlets are Custm Cntent prtlets, which allws instructrs t add cntent relevant t the syllabus fr this particular curse cntext r the curse itself. JICS 6.4 12

Cursemates The registered students and instructr(s) f a curse are listed n the main view f Cursemates. Each name may als be identified by the rle (Student r Faculty) t which they have been assigned. By default, images are nt shwn in rder t speed up the lading time. The level f infrmatin available fr each member depends n the details that have been entered by each individual in their respective My Inf prtlet. A pht f the cursemate/faculty may be displayed, depending n whether the pht was attached t their My Inf and whether they have elected t shw r hide the image. In additin t viewing infrmatin fr cursemates/faculty, yu can als email selected curse members. NOTE: This same functinality is als available fr campus grups. When it is used in that cntext, the prtlet is called Grup Mates. Preferences Highlight Faculty/Leaders Frm the Cursemates prtlet: 1. Click the Wrench icn t pen the Prtlet Settings and Preferences screen. 2. Click the Preferences tab. 3. Select the Highlight Faculty/Leaders check bx t have names f faculty r leaders f grups displayed with highlighting n Cursemates. Functins View My Inf fr Cursemates Frm the main view f the Cursemates prtlet: 1. Click the assciated with the name f a particular persn t pen My Inf fr that persn. 2. The infrmatin shwn is determined by the individual cursemate in his/her wn My Inf prtlet. Shw/Hide Images Depending n individual settings in a persn's My Inf prtlet, pictures may r may nt be available. Frm the Main Page f the Cursemates prtlet: 1. Click the Shw Images link t display the images f the cursemates. 2. Click the Hide Images link t nt display any images f the cursemates. Email Selected Members JICS 6.4 13

Learning Management System Student Guide Cursemates Frm the main screen f the Cursemates prtlet: 3. Select the check bx beside the name(s) f the individual(s) yu want t email and click the Email Selected Members link. OR Basic Select the Select All check bx if yu want t email all cursemates. 4. The Recipients page pens. In rder t cmply with security measures and FERPA requirements, the actual email addresses will nt appear. Only the full name f the recipient(s) will be displayed. 5. If yu need t include thers in this message, select ne f tw views: Advanced The Basic view allws yu t select r unselect recipients f the message. It includes nly members assciated with the current curse cntext. The Advanced view includes additinal grup flders that yu may have access t. This view allws yu t add recipients frm utside this particular curse. 3. Select recipients by users r by rles. If yu select t view by users, the rle als displays. Hwever, user names d nt display if yu select t view by rle. 4. Enter the subject and the bdy. 5. Click Send. 14

Cursewrk Cursewrk Student Cursewrk assignments will always be ne f three frmats (see further details n each f the fllwing pages): Online ( ) File Exchange ( ) Offline ( ) These assignments can be rganized by Unit r Type and are srted by Due Date by default. Each assignment listing includes the frmat, the due date, type, and status. The listing f assignments can be srted by any f the five clumns n a Unit by Unit r Type by Type basis depending n hw the prtlet was rganized. Details f the assignment can be viewed by clicking the assignment name. Infrmatin displayed depends n the assignment type and state. JICS 6.4 15

Learning Management System Student Guide Cursewrk Online Assignments Online ( ) assignments are quizzes/tests/exams created by yur instructr and which yu cmplete within the prtlet. Clicking a linked assignment name in the Cursewrk prtlet will display different views f the Student Assignment Detail screen, depending n the state f the assignment. An Online assignment might be viewable but inactive, which means that yu can learn abut the assignment but yu cannt cmplete it. The Online assignment culd als be Active and thus ready t be cmpleted. If the Online assignment has already been cmpleted, yu will see a screen infrming yu f that fact and pssibly prviding access t the grade and any feedback received. The Student Assignment Detail screen displays the fllwing: The Header displays the type and name f assignment, unit, frmat, grading methd, time limit, grading infrmatin, status message, and due date infrmatin. A Descriptin is always displayed. Instructins are displayed nce the assignment is active r has been cmpleted. Any links t relevant Files are displayed fllwing the same parameters as the Instructins. The Cursewrk sectin allws yu t cmplete the assignment and view cmpleted and graded assignments. Single-Attempt Assignment If yu have nt yet taken the test, a message t that fact displays in the Header, the Cursewrk sectin displays sme Imprtant Infrmatin abut the test, and the Take this Test link is available. If yu started the test but did nt cmplete it, the test is assumed t be in prgress. If the assignment allws re-entry, the Imprtant Infrmatin will display the time remaining and the Resume this Test link is available. If the test is cmplete but nt graded, the fllwing message appears: "Yu tk this test (time and date). Yur grade is nt available." If the test is cmplete and graded, the My Results table displays the final grade, cmpletin and graded dates, and a Review cmpleted/graded test link (if allwed by the instructr). If yu submitted an assignment that was returned t yu fr rewrk, which yu edited and re-submitted, a Wrkflw table may display the flw f the assignment. If s, an Individual Results table will display each attempt and its cmpletin date, the scre, time spent n the attempt, and status. If the assignment has been cmpleted and graded, Review links are available fr viewing all attempts. Multiple-Attempt Assignment If yu have nt yet taken the test, a message t that fact displays in the Header, the Cursewrk sectin displays sme Imprtant Infrmatin abut the test, and the Take this Test link is available. The Header may als display hw many times the test has been attempted and hw many attempts are remaining. 16

Learning Management System Student Guide Cursewrk If yu started the test but did nt cmplete it, the test is assumed t be in prgress. If the assignment allws re-entry, the Imprtant Infrmatin will display the time remaining and the Resume this Test link is available. A Mark as Final buttn is available fr yu t submit an attempt as the final ne, even if all attempts were nt used. Fr example, yu may make a perfect scre n the first attempt, making it unnecessary t use remaining attempts. The Individual Results table shws the number f attempts allwed and results f any attempts that have already been made. If a review is allwed, each attempt will have a Review link. If the test is cmplete but nt graded, the Imprtant Infrmatin will indicate this fact. If the test is cmplete and graded, the My Results table displays the final grade, any adjustments, feedback, and a Review link t review the graded test (if allwed by the instructr). Functins Take this Test Frm the Cursewrk prtlet: Resume this Test 1. Click the apprpriate assignment. 2. Click the Take this Test link. 3. Answer the questins n each screen. Each screen displays the sectin name and sectin surce material fllwed by questins fr that sectin. Yur instructr determines hw many questins are displayed per screen fr each sectin. 4. Althugh mving frm screen t screen autmatically saves yur wrk, yu may want t peridically click the Save Prgress buttn if yu wrk n ne screen fr a significant amunt f time. 5. The instructr may include ne r many upladed files, and yu can uplad ne r many assignments back t the instructr fr grading. An example f a file exchange assignment is a term paper. Clicking an assignment name displays the details f the assignment. This view will differ, depending n the state f the assignment. The Header displays the type and name f assignment, unit, frmat, grading methd, time limit, grading infrmatin, status message, and due date infrmatin. A Descriptin is always displayed. Instructins are displayed nce the assignment is active. The Cursewrk sectin allws yu t dwnlad any hyperlinked files upladed by the instructr, uplad and submit the assignment, and view cmpleted and graded assignments. The Uplad a File bx allws yu t lcate and uplad files that will be submitted t the curse instructr fr grading. The My Files table lists the files that yu have upladed fr the assignment, alng with uplad dates and ntes that were entered. Yu can als edit r delete the file by clicking the file name. The Mark as Final buttn is used t indicate that the assignment is cmplete. Befre the assignment is indicated as cmplete, yu can add, edit, and delete files and the instructr cannt view the files r assign a grade. Once the assignment is cmpleted and yu click the Mark as Final buttn, files cannt be added, edited, r deleted, and the instructr can view and grade the files. An assignment that has nt been submitted by the due date will be autmatically submitted with the files that have been upladed. It will autmatically be given a grade f 0, but the instructr can manually change the grade. A Wrkflw table may display the life cycle f an assignment. Fr example, yu may have submitted an assignment that was unacceptable and returned t yu fr rewrk, which yu edited and re-submitted. The Wrkflw table wuld display the flw f this assignment. The My Results table is visible after the assignment has been graded and shws the final grade fr the assignment, when it was cmpleted, when it was graded, any curse-wide bnus pints applied, and any instructr feedback.
