Learning Objectives 1. Understand the history of laser-scanning and its development within the built environment. 2. Utilizing Scan to Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools. 3. Implementing Sustainable Practices through Scan to BIM.

History of Laser Scanning LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) Laser scanner emits laser pulses in a predefined array pattern. Pulse reflects back to scanner upon registering a solid object. Coordinate values are calculated for the point struck by the laser. In addition, coordinate points are assigned an "intensity value." By recognizing changes in intensity value between points, different building materials can be identified. Individual scans are then registered together to form overall point cloud of the building. This point cloud made up of more than 60 million points, yields a level of detail down to one quarter-inch. Unfortunately the file size of the point cloud is often several gigabytes in size.

Laser Scanning Scan Up to 500,000 pts./sec Range 900 feet Accuracy - 1/4 Laser - Eye safe Class 3R - DIN EN 60825-1

How to Implement Scan to BIM. Building Information Modeling (BIM) Database of information rather than electronic drawing. Model queries- How many? What type? Interface and collaboration Network Solutions

Building Information Modeling Parametric Information 4d cost 5d schedule 6d sustainability Geographic Information System (GIS) Transformative software beyond CAD

Scan to BIM enables an interactive engagement with the existing environment. Ability to create smart structures out of existing conditions (or as-builts) Integrate campuses into an integrated network. Remote review and management of holistic systems not just individual structures

Selling Scan to BIM as an Added Value Selling Scan to BIM as an added value service to clients through stand-alone development or an integral component of project life-cycles.

Implement 3D imaging into your practice Team up with a local 3D imaging service provider. Extend your service into creating existing conditions BIM execution and management plan

Laser Scanning Benefits SURVEYING/PRE-DESIGN 1.Immediate orthographic projections for survey. 2.Accurate accounting of scope for design purposes. 3.Dimensionally accurate data 4.Reduced surveying time. CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS (DESIGN) 1.Precise location of all Architectural features 2.Orthographic projections increase dimensional and architectural accuracy while reducing production time and saving money. 3.Remote access reduces site visits and improves design efficiency. 4.3D visualization facilitates troubleshooting, leading to improved design.

Laser Scanning Benefits BIDDING 1. Remote access results in more accurate contractor pricing. 2. Remote access reduces bid qualifications.(less Exclusions) 3. Reduces site visit coordination. CONSTRUCTION/CONTRACT ADMINISTRATION 1.Remote access improves communication between all parties 2. Fewer change orders 3. Eliminate unnecessary site visits POST-CONSTRUCTION 1. Remote access for property management to obtain services from vendors 2. 3D archive of scope at time of data capture. 3. Foundation for future development of 3D database of building information 4. Marketing
