3 What is Laser Scanning? Laser Scanning is a technology used in the construction industry to capture highly accurate 3D detailed images. The process can be used inside or outside a building and allows physical objects to be recorded digitally to capture existing conditions and facilitate BIM modeling. The high speed laser scanner produces millions of points called point data. This point data is a precise representation of a surface object captured from the line of sight of the laser beam. Point data is further processed as a point cloud for use with BIM related software. This highly accurate data gives modelers an enhanced overview of design parameters; assisting development of precise 3D models of existing systems.

4 Advantages of Laser Scanning 1. Fast, accurate results of field conditions without the need for a time-consuming field layout. 2. Encourages collaboration amongst trades through quick documentation of existing conditions and digital files that can easily be shared. Allows for real-time interactive collaboration via Webshare cloud. 3. Smaller size and portability of the unit allows scanning to be executed in both large and confined areas.

6 Scanner Unit Small and Compact design (9.5x8x4in) for portability Touch screen interface Indoor/Outdoor Scanning range up to 120m Accuracy of 1/16 of an inch per 10m- 25m range Vertical/Horizontal scan parameter of 305deg/360deg Single scan takes about 5 minutes Photorealistic color scans up to 70MP resolution High performance battery for hours of use without external power

7 Set-Up and Scanning Scanner is mounted on a tripod and positioned in areas of the intended 3D model design Scan targets are placed around unit for processing multiple scans together After engaging the unit, a beam of low emitting laser (20 mw-class 3R) fans out from the unit to capture surroundings while scanner rotates Once a scan is completed, unit is moved to another area and process is repeated Scan files are stored onto a SD card

8 Processing Scan Files The files are transferred from the SD card onto a computer With the aid of Scene software files are processed and viewed Scan files are exported out in a format readable by Kubit software and AutoCAD With the combination of both Kubit and AutoCAD, 3D backgrounds are developed for references used within AutoCAD These backgrounds are used when 3D modeling begins for accurate routing of mechanical systems or equipment placement

9 BIM Software SCENE This software is used in conjunction with Faro laser scanner for processing scan data Kubit VirtuServ This software serves as a linkage between scan data and AutoCAD for developing 3D backgrounds AutoCad and Kubit PointSense Scan files are imported into AutoCAD s environment as point clouds for constructability by using Kubit PointSense Navis Manage This software is used for coordination and clash detection between 3D drawing models submitted from individual trades

10 Creating CAD Backgrounds A single scan contains millions of points and has no solid base. By using Kubit s VirtuSurv and PointSense, 3D solids are created in CAD to be used as background references. Both programs have a multitude of functions for developing backgrounds on structural, architectural, equipment, and mechanical systems Scan files eliminate the need to travel back and forth to the field to gather missing information

11 3D Modeling and Coordination After 3D solids are created CAD modelers can then model around actual existing conditions for greater routing accuracy. This process will also discover routing issues of the intended design, offering engineers the opportunity to re-evaluate their designed system if clashes exist. In Navisworks Manage, 3D models are imported from all trades for an overall coordination effort. This minimizes rework and gives greater tolerances on prefabricated work. Dimensions are more precise for installation of hangers, systems, and equipment placement

12 Creating Drawing Sheets Drawing sheets are created to reflect the 3D modeling. Detailed Plans, Elevations, Sections, Views, and Spools for piping, are created for fabrication and installation Before finalization of a drawing sheet, it is Issued For Review to the project team for evaluation and, if necessary, changes to the drawing prior to final approval Once approved, sheets are Issued For Construction and sent to the Project Manager for distribution of drawing sets

13 As-Built Documentation After complete installation of the design system, any changes made during the construction phase are documented and updated on the drawing sheets and the 3D model Updated drawing sets are submitted for as-built documentation. A copy of the 3D model can be generated and formatted for view on Navisworks Freedom viewer. The free viewer can be downloaded from the Autodesk website. (See next slide for HTML address)
