SUPPORTED WELCOME TO MEET PORTUGAL IN NEW YORK FESTIVAL Portugal and the United States of America have outstanding bilateral relations that date back to the eighteen century, with Portugal being one of the first countries to officially recognize the Union. It is also interesting to note that the Consulate of the US in Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands, is the oldest continuously running US diplomatic office in the world. It is therefore important to continue promoting awareness in the US for the values of contemporary Portugal. In this context it is particularly interesting to recognize that the festival Meet Portugal in NY renders recognition of the exceptionally vibrant Portuguese community that thrives in New York. I congratulate the promoters of the events for their efforts and sincerely hope that the New Yorkers and other visitors will enjoy meeting with Portugal in June. Nuno Brito Ambassador of Portugal to the US Portugal is the closest European country to the US and a few thousand miles of Atlantic Ocean are all that separate Portugal from New York City. But this June, a series of events across New York will give New Yorkers a chance to see another side of Portugal. And it is with great expectations that we launch the first edition of the Festival. The reality is that the Portuguese community in New York is so diversified and successful in so many ways, that the opportunity was there for a closer encounter: let us Meet Portugal in NY. The Festival is being organized in close partnership with private Portuguese companies and institutions that do business in New York, as well as with some of the most respected New York cultural institutions. As so, this Festival will be a great opportunity to network with members of the trade community and create business opportunities. I do want to thank and recognize the enthusiastic welcome, given by the promoters of the different events, at our idea of launching this umbrella campaign, which will profile a contemporary Portugal with its values of creativity and culture. It s a unique blend of elements. Don t miss this opportunity for such a rare experience. We are proud of what we have achieved and we would like to share it with you: please join us and taste a world of difference in the wines of Portugal. http://winesofportugal.info Strings of Thought is a contemporary dance piece that uses digital media as part of an interactive scenography. Conceptually, the project intends to evoke human self-reflection and its consequence on the decision-making process. This introspection also questions the duality of who we are and who we wish to be. In the performance, this argumentation is materialized through a scenic setup of suspended cables attached to various points of the dancer s body. They represent the abstractions of our personal dogmas, and condition movement and dexterity. Since 2006, Ivan Franco and Lígia Teixeira have developed several performances that explore physical interaction with interactive systems, creating a true dialogue between body and machine. Strings of Thought will premiere on July 11-13rd in Europe, in the context of the European Capital of Culture 2012. This work-in-progress has been presented last December in Portugal and since has evolved to be a Luso-American collaboration, by integrating Liza Wade Green, American writer and performer and David Grubbs (PIMA MFA) as its artistic advisor. www.milliways.pt

The particular conditions of the soil of volcanic origin, the proximity of the sea, the climate conditions and the one of a kind production process give the wine its unique and singular characteristics. This robust, fortified drink, was the wine of choice for many of the Founding Fathers and was even used to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson purchased and cellared more Madeira in his life, than any other wine. Although even if the wine is thoroughly entwined with the early portion of American history, Madeira wine is enjoying a revival and, it s not just that this most noble of fortified wines from Portugal has a timeless spirit about it, but due to the complexity of aromas, it can be drunk at any hour of the day or night. Born in Oporto, Reis found renown first as a poet before making a series of documentary shorts that attracted the attention of Manoel de Oliveira who invited Reis to be assistant director on Oliveira s first radical masterpiece, RITE OF SPRING. The pioneering mode of poetic ethnographic cinema which Oliveira and Reis defined guided the course of the four extraordinary works Reis co-directed with his wife, the psychologist Margarida Cordeiro. The films of Reis and Cordeiro invented a poetically liberated and hypnotically cinematographic film language, a style and sensibility that set the course of Portugal s lasting tradition of radical cinema, exerting a formative influence, for example, upon João Cesar Monteiro. Yet equally important was Reis career and legacy as a longtime senior professor of film production and aesthetics at Lisbon s Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema. This retrospective includes a selection of works by Reis s students including Pedro Costa, João Pedro Rodrigues, and Joaquim Saphino. Introduction written by Haden Guest, Director of the Harvard Film Archive. Special thanks to Haden Guest (Harvard Film Archive); Pedro Fernandes Duarte (Rosa Filmes); Alexandra Pinho (Instituto Camões); Paulo Cunha Alves, Consul General of Portugal in Boston; José Manuel de Costa & Luis Miguel Oliveira (Cinemateca Portuguesa); João Pedro Rodrigues; Pedro Costa; Ana Conboy & Sofia Soares (Boston College), and Rui Boavista Marques (Portuguese Trade and Investment Office). Film prints are courtesy of the Cinemateca Portuguesa. The short film Celeste portrays the lives of Portuguese immigrants in 1980 s, in the Ironbound community. Shot in seven days, on location in Newark (NJ), with renowned Portuguese and American actors, such as Joana Pais de Brito, Dinarte Freitas and Tiago Castro. The score was composed by Björk s right hand man Matt Robertson, who is known for his work on Sucker Punch, Inside Job and Quantum of Solace. The original 80 s music was written by indie band St. Lucia s Jean-Philip Grobler. The film also features the famous portuguese song O Corpo É Que Paga, from iconic singer António Variações. The look of the film was achieved by cinematographer Daniele Napolitano, in close collaboration with Technicolor s colorist Tim Stipan, known for Black Swan, Haywire and Margin Call. Financed entirely through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter and a personal loan, this is director José-Maria Norton s first short film with an actual budget. The filmmaker ensured very high production quality through high-end visual effects by VFX company Light of Day, color grading at Technicolor, 5.1 audio mix at a Dolbyapproved theater and proper conforming and finishing work in Smoke. The director / filmmaker and some of the cast will be present at the screening. www.celesteshortfilm.com
