1 FIELD OF STUDY COURSE PROPOSAL LAIS 333 A. Cover Application 1. Proposed field of study: FSLT 2. Course number: LAIS Course title: Introduction to Luso-Brazilian Literatures 4. Catalog description: Introduction to literary movements and tendencies, along with representative authors, within the context of the Portuguese-speaking world. Critical tools for approaching specific literary genres: narrative fiction, poetry, and drama. Readings are selected for their literary, cultural, and historical significance. Taught in Portuguese. 5. Prerequisites: LAIS 313 or LAIS Unit: 1 unit 7. Estimate of student enrollment: By whom and when the course will be offered: The course will be offered each spring (beginning spring 2012) by the Director of Portuguese or another member of LAIS faculty. 9. Staffing implications: Currently none. As the Luso-Brazilian Studies program grows and more students enroll in the program, a need may arise to hire a part-time adjunct. 10. Adequacy of library, technology, and other resources: Library has mostly adequate listings; some works in Portuguese and in English translation are available. As the Luso-Brazilian Studies program grows, the acquisition of additional materials will be required. 11. Relation to existing courses and curricula: This course complements our offering of LAIS courses in both Latin American and Peninsular cultures and literatures. Students will be able to take this course as part of their Portugueselanguage curriculum, or as an elective in the LAIS major or, perhaps, to fulfill a requirement in International Studies (pending approval). Also, there are a number of study abroad opportunities in Brazil and in the Robins school of Business through which possible linkages can be established. The course will serve, moreover, as a cornerstone for the future Luso-Brazilian studies minor that is currently under development in the LAIS department. 12. Contact person: Dixon Abreu

2 B. Explanation of Field of Study fulfillment How the course fulfills FSLT: This is an introductory literature course taught in Portuguese. It is conceived as a gateway course that will introduce students to basic concepts of literary analysis within the multiple cultural contexts of the Portuguese-speaking world. Drawing upon a series of canonical and non-canonical works that exemplify the diversity of literatures from the Portuguese-speaking lands, we shall study how to approach, analyze, and comment upon a literary text. The course will thus provide students with the analytical tools and critical approaches necessary to engage in advanced writing and research in Portuguese at the 400 level. While the course will expose our students to some of the major aesthetic, political, and social issues that have informed the evolution of Luso-Brazilian literature, emphasis be placed on how a given text produces meaning and underscores specific issues of representation. Students will be exposed to an expansive body of literary works in Portuguese, with reading assignments averaging 50 to 100 pages per week, in addition to regular participation in class discussions, preparation of written compositions, and midterm and final examinations. The course will center on close reading and commentary of primary texts; however, supplementary readings may be used at times to illuminate our discussions and offer students a series of theoretical models. Readings will cover several literary genres, periods, and geographical regions. The syllabus will include the Age of Discovery (e.g. Pêro Vaz de Caminha), the Renaissance (e.g. Bento Teixeira), Romanticism and Realism (e.g. Machado de Assis), Saudosismo (e.g. Teixeira de Pascoais), Brazilian Modernist poetry and prose (e.g. Carlos Drummond de Andrade), Brazilian and African Crônicas (Lya Luft, Manuel Lopes), Post-Colonial Africa (Mia Couto) and Post-Modern fiction and Theater (e.g. Rui Nunes). See attached syllabus for more details.
