Course Description The study of the management of people at work with emphasis on recruiting, selecting, training, evaluating, and rewarding personnel. The study of the use of technology to streamline HR activities. Course Objectives To establish basic knowledge and practical familiarity with the major functional areas of human resource management oriented toward strategic application; to become familiar with the uses of technology in HR to allow greater HR focus on strategic activities. This is the initiating course in the field of human resource management. For students pursuing the MSHRM degree, this course will provide an overview of the field and introduce the functional areas that must be mastered during the program. For all students, the course will provide familiarity with the principles and theories relevant to good human resource practices in any job or career. Expectations for Student Engagement The normal expectation of study time for graduate study is 2-3 hours of study outside of class for every hour spent in class. This amounts to a total of 15-20 hours per week. While individual competencies vary, those desirous of enhancing their success in this course should attempt to achieve this level of engagement. Graduate study requires a serious commitment of time and mental focus which should be considered in light of other responsibilities such as employment and family demands. Therefore, we recommend that you discuss your educational plan each term with your employer and family who may be willing to work with you so that you can set aside the focused time needed for reading, study, and completion of written assignments. Student Learning Outcomes On completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Identify and describe the roles played by members of the HRM function in organizational strategy formulation. 2. Discuss the major functions of human resource management (including staffing, training and development, performance management, compensation, health and safety, and employee/labor relations) and their contribution to organizational success. 3.
