3 COURSE SYLLABUS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS BUSI 644 HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT COURSE DESCRIPTION This course integrates theory with a practical approach to the topic of human resource development (HRD) with a focus on the design, implementation, and management of employee orientation, training, and career development programs. A comprehensive view of the concepts, processes, and philosophies of training and development is presented in this course. Emphasis is placed on current trends and research related to the various aspects of the human resource development function. Students will discuss the history and future of HRD, strategies, methods, materials, and measurement of training programs, as well as apply the processes involved in designing, developing, and implementing appropriate and effective training programs. RATIONALE This course directly supports AIMS 1 10 of Liberty University s Statement of Purpose. The human resource manager must have the necessary skills to be able to design, implement, and manage an effective training and development program to support the strategic mission of the organization. These tools will be the foundation upon which the resource manager will be able to provide complex decisions with regard to the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization s training and development programs. 4 V. COURSE OBJECTIVES A. Identify HRD functions and the influences on employee behavior. B. Describe the differences between learning and instructional processes. C. Design, implement, and evaluate HRD programs. D. Assess employee socialization, orientation, skills and technical training needs. E. Examine the integration of performance management and coaching in the organization. F. Evaluate organizational development models, theories, and concepts. G. Recognize the responsibility of HRD in a culturally diverse environment. H. Appraise the appropriate training programs for strategic organizational needs. VI. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Discussion boards Each student is required to answer one of the discussion questions provided in the week assigned and to respond to one other student s posting, using the 2x2 response method: 2 positive evaluative comments and 2 constructive critical comments. C. Two-part group collaborative research project This project will allow the student to design a training program for a small business. The first part (due week 5) is comprised of the training program package that would be necessary for your team s organization. The second part (due week 7) is a literature review, written in APA format, to provide support for your training program. D. Exams (2)
