Preservation and enhancement of the biodiversity of animal species in Tuscany

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY local breeds Tuscany has a wide variety of animal and plant species: we have twenty native breeds of different species, in every province.

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY the bio territory There is a direct relationship between the native breeds and its territory: the age long presence of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs and donkeys has patterned the Tuscan country and it continues to preserve it as we all know.

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY the bio territory The presence of animals and people guarantees the preservation of the environment, of our landscape, the balance between the cultivated areas and forest, rural roads, watercourses, nature and farmhouses.

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY the bio territory The preservation and the development of biodiversity imply the presence of farmers on the territory to ensure the maintenance of the environmental conditions and the landscapes that characterize Tuscany and its standard of living.

I deliberately omit in this presentation the scientific motivations that require the presence of biodiversity, for example, the preservation of genetic heritage, with greater resistance to diseases, the genetic variability that is the basis of any work of genetic improvement and production, etc.

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY actions of protection The operations of biodiversity of animal species adopted in Tuscany are based on economic support to breeders and on the initiatives of the commercial promotions.

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY financial support to farmers The economic support to the farmers is necessary to compensate, at least in part, the higher production costs and especially the low income from the sale of the products. The local breeds have lower yield than the global breeds.

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY financial support to farmers The RDP Rural Development Programme 2007 2013 in Tuscany paid about eight million euros to the breeders of local breeds of limited diffusion.

ANIMAL BIODIVERSITY IN TUSCANY the commercial use At the same time, the Breeder Organization in Tuscany made marketing activities to identify and promote the consumption of local products, deriving from the native breeds. It is using registered trademarks and PGI that meet strict production rules.

Well, thank you for your interest. I invite you to come to Italy to attend EXPO in Milan, until the 31 st of October. The theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" is very close to what we are discussing these days in Brussels. And don t forget to visit Tuscany! Have a nice day!
