The National Plan of Action in AnGR of Argentina: Actions and Challenges Carlos Mezzadra INTA Argentina
The Global Plan of Action 4 Main Strategic Areas: Inventory Sustainable Use and Development Conservation Policy issues
The Situation in Argentina Argentinean stock: Cattle: 50 M Sheep: 15 M Goats: 4 M Pigs: 3 M Guanacos:
The Situation in Argentina Commercial breeds of the main species very spread and used for commercial production; attended by private sector. AnGR Germplasm Banks Network established and consolidated by INTA 11 Active Banks 1 Cryogenic Bank No precedents in the country!
INTA s AnGR Germplasm Bank Network Animal species included: Cattle: Sheep: Goats: 5 Active Banks 1 Active Banks 2 Active Banks 1 Active Bank Guanacos: 1 Active Bank Poultry: 1 Active Bank Bees: 1 Active Bank Tecnología Agropecuaria
INTA s AnGR Germplasm Bank Objectives: Network Maintenance of genetic variability in animal populations. Characterization and evaluation of animal germplasm. Conservation of lines of animal biotypes of present or potential value. Documentation of the germplasm conserved. Capacity building in Human Resources (training at graduate and post graduate levels).
Specific lines of Angus and Hereford breeds. Criollos: : actions in situ in INTA: Leales (Tuc( Tuc.) Balcarce El Colorado (Fsa( Fsa.) La Rioja Santiago del Estero Cattle

INTA Santiago del Estero Maintenance and Evaluation of the breed as purebrebred Ministerio de Agricultura Universidad de Lomas de Zamora Maintenance of a population of Patagonic Criollo
Future actions Maintenance of the Active Banks. Establishment of a common data base in order to estimate genetic values at a national level (including Breeders Associations). Searching of candidate genes for productive traits. To Explore alternatives for documentation systems (DBGERMO). Technical support to Experimental Stations with less installed capacity or absence of geneticists.
Criollo Goats Criollo Goat from Neuquén, ecotype "Chilluda" - Location: : Veranada del Tromen (Prov. of Neuquén) Criollo Goat from Neuquén, ecotype "Pelada" - Location: : Veranada del Tromen (Prov. of Neuquén)
Criollo Goats Animal products (meat) mainly to own consumption, familiar economies of subsistence. Very high Social impact. Criollo goats have not been recognized as a formal breed yet (but documented in DAD-IS). Criollo goats are still reared under transhumance conditions.
Criollo Goats Breeding Program of INTA Bariloche: Started the first conservation and breeding program for Criollo goats in the country, together to the search of economic and environmental sustainability of the productive system. Valuation of goats products: Meat Origin Denomination (Successful Story FAO FAO s Adding value.) Cashmere Exportation market
Criollo Goats Orientation: MILK (northern region of the country) Conservation activities: In vivo: : experimental flock Bank of semen Characterization: Morphological Milk quantity and quality Growth Reproduction and meat quality.
Criollo Sheep Morphological and morphostructural characterization of Criollo sheep. Wool samples analysis (Regional Lab. Bariloche). Polls to farmers and users oriented to establish use of the resource. Documentation using DAD-IS, including information of specific lines. Another successful story.
Morphological and morphostructural characterization of populations isolated. Determination of fiber quality. Definition of selection objectives (fiber, body size, temperament, reproductive performance). Organization of genealogical records at a farm level. Guanacos
Poultry: Araucana breed Determination of the cultural link between this resource and familiar economies. Phenotypic characterization (productive) Census of population size and use level of Araucana breed.
Honey Bees GERMOPLASM BANK: Maintenance of an enhanced closed population originated from 6 different genetic populations. Preservation of semen: Establishment of a protocol for cryopreservation.
Honey bees Characterization Traits: - Tolerance to diseases Hygienic behavior Meekness (selection at a beehive level) Prolificacy (associated to honey yield) Tolerance to Varroa
Main achievements Consolidation of a Network of 11 Animal Germplasm Active Banks and 1 Cryogenic bank Strong institutional and inter institutional interaction, in all species included in the Banks Advances have been achieved in protocols of methodological aspects both for preservation activities and information evaluation
Future Challenges Inventory: main problem. Livestock census do not discriminate by breeds. A possibility exists..for 2011 Legislation: up to now, no legislation exists at a national level. First try: TIRF.
Future Challenges Policy building: the actions taken, in spite their impact and success, have been promoted and performed as isolated efforts, but not as a consequence of a national agreed policy. Now, CONARGEN Financing: an eternal pending matter.
