It includes classical, contemporary and pop music productions, dance, literary, theatre and folk evenings, folk art shows and exhibitions, as well as a three-day International Jazz Weekend. Essentially this means that the organisers offer an alternative platform alongside the mother festival, with carefully selected programmes. Among 15 August - 15 October 2010 the circus performances, there will be 3-5 larger Hungarians in the Bauhaus productions from the representatives of New Circus, a movement which is gaining more and more popularity in our country. The central focal point of the programme is the Hungarian premiere of a production directed by Árpád Schilling and performed by the graduating students of the French Circus Academy. Works of fine art, paintings, prints, sculptures, architectural designs, models, photos, furniture, stage and costume designs, photographic and textual documents and film clips, will present one of the most significant art schools of the 20th century. Among its members are numerous artists from Pécs who became renowned throughout 23-28 August 2010 Europe. The exhibition (which will be presented XV. Pécs International Adult Puppet Festival by the Berlin Bauhaus Archive from November A festival consisting of a competition of foreign and domestic amateur and professional puppeteers, and invited renowned performance artists and companies, whose climax will be a gala performance. Planned programmes are: traditional Indonesian shadow play, Vietnamese water-puppet-show (Vietnamese National Waterpuppet Theatre), a traditional Japanese puppet theatre performance, Eric Bass and company (USA), Le Bal des Fous (F). A special attraction of the festival will be a roofed arena made from wood, serving as one of the venues for the 2010) musters up the Bauhaus artists from Pécs (Marcell Breuer, Ernő Forbát, Hugó Johan, Farkas Molnár, Henrik Stefán, Andor Weininger, Etel Fodor), other Hungarians that were active in Bauhaus (Sándor Bortnyik, László Moholy-Nagy, Gyula Pap) and the great names of Bauhaus of the 20th century (Josef Albers, Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Vaszilij Kandinszkij, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Theo van Doesburg). Classical Music 13 November 2010-31 March 2011 Europe of The Eight The Eight (Róbert Berény, Dezső Czigány, Béla Czóbel, Károly Kernstok, Ödön Márffy, Dezső Orbán, Bertalan Pór, Lajos Tihanyi) was the first artistic avant-garde group in Hungary that created its own art in accordance with the most modern contemporary European trends. In addition to Hungarian artists, the works of European contemporaries (Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Derain, Vlaminck, Duffy, Kokoschka, Kirchner, Pechstein, Bohumil Kubista) will also be displayed. 2 January - 9 December 2010 World famous Stars in Pécs Among the performers participating in this year-long concert series will be: Andrea Meláth mezzosoprano, Mikulas Peter bass, László Hadady oboe, Latry Olivier organ, Kraggerud Henning violin, Say Fazil piano, Elschenbroich Leonard cello. Pécs Highlights 2010 4 5 15-22 August 2010 Pécs Cantat An international choir festival with over one thousand participants from all regions of the world. Under the direction of Hungarian and foreign conductors renowned in Europe, the singers will be working in six workshops to create a joint production. The audience will be able to enjoy the production at several locations in Pécs and surroundings. The event will be complemented with workshop concerts and joint choral performances. 6-12 September 2010 Improvisatio-Creatio An international symposium and a master class in improvisation, with an improvisation competition in honour of Ferenc Liszt, including public concerts by the renowned participating performers. November - December 2010 Hungarian World Stars in Pécs A series of concerts presenting internationally famous Hungarian orchestras and soloists in the newly built Concert Centre. Popular music and World Music 21-24 April 2010 Pécs University Days The largest youth event in Pécs, hosting some fifty bands on four separate stages over a period of four days, including at least fifty Hungarian and foreign performers. The concert programme will be complemented with theatre, street theatre and dance performances, exhibitions and film shows. 17-19 June 2010 Fishing on Orfű An alternative pop festival held in Orfű, a village near Pécs, on the shores of a picturesque lake. Some eighty bands will perform on three large and several smaller stages. The concerts are complemented with cooking competitions, workshops, film showings, stand-up comedy, disco and nocturnal hikes. 25-26 June 2010 Pécs Folk & Roll Festival One of the main goals of this festival is to liven up and renew folk music traditions. The winning productions of a talent scout competition are presented, where popular music, rock, jazz, metal and numerous other genres meet musical traditions from different nations and ethnical groups. Planned performers are: Vágtázó Csodaszarvas, Csík zenekar András Lovasi, Kálmán Balogh Gypsy, Cimbalom Band, Kormorán Memory Band, Boban Markovic Palya Bea 2-11 July 2010 X. Jubilee Rock Marathon One of the most significant rock festivals of Hungary is held in the picturesque Malomvölgy Arboretum where, over 10 days, famous international and domestic representatives of underground musical trends (rock, metal, alter, punk, blues, etc.) entertain the public. 11-13 November 2010 East-West Passage, 2010 Balkan World Music Festival A programme consisting of world music concerts, art exhibitions, conferences and dialogues aimed at presenting the cultural diversity of the Balkan Peninsula. Planned performers are Félix Lajkó, Boris Kovac and the LaDaBa Orchestra, Gayan Utteyak Orchestra, Mercan Dede, Ferus Mustafov and the Söndörgő Együttes, Fanfara Shavale.

Pécs Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture 6 7 The OPUS2010 Conference and Concert Centre (already popularly known as the Snail House, thanks to its shape) will provide the region s largest concert hall with a capacity for an audience of one thousand, as well as providing a venue for cultural events and conferences. The unique feature of the building is that the whole auditorium can be raised, or made to disappear. other with its architectural memorials from many peoples and nationalities. The face of the town is enriched with the early Christian underground town, the Mosque, Minaret and Türbe of the Turks, the tiny houses of the Bulgarian gardeners in narrow streets clinging to the side of Havi Hill, and the palaces decorated with Zsolnay ceramic work. The Zsolnay Porcelain Factory is synonymous with the name of the city of Pécs and its history is now entering a new phase. The redevelopment of the world-famous factory will prove the largest such development of listed buildings in Central-Eastern Europe, involving 35,000 m² and 25 buildings. Alongside the existing porcelain The borderless colourful variety is provided by the festivals of Pécs, lasting from spring until autumn: the Pécs Spring Festival (March), the International Folk Dance Meeting (September), Promenade Festival (June), the International Culture Week in Pécs (ICWiP, in July), the Heritage Festival (September), and by the bustle of people throughout the night at concerts in public squares of the widest variety of styles, by the wines of the Mecsek and Villány Hills and by the flavours of dishes from the Croatian, German, Gypsy and Balkan cuisine. Alongside the many events Pécs is planning significant infrastructural developments for 2010. Pécs a part of the UNESCO World Heritage The historical city centre of Pécs boasts the richest collection of Roman remains in all of Central Europe and in light of this was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2000. Pécs Pécs a part of the UNESCO World Heritage 8 9 The entrance to the Cella Septichora Visitors Centre (1) can be found amongst the chestnut trees lining Saint Stephen s Square, where we enter the seven-foiled chapel, from which the name derives, and step back into the past. The entrance boasts an unusual glass-concrete gateway, which reveals its true beauty during the dark, making a night-time walk worthwhile. In the same square we find the Early Christian Mausoleum (2), the largest two-storey funereal building, under the site of what was once a series of water steps. Its walls are decorated with scenes from the Old Testament. Two sarcophagus may also be viewed in the exhibition. If you are hungry we recommend: The Pezsgőház (Champagne Factory) Restaurant (5) (12 Szent István Square) You may choose from the specialities of the menu of one of Pécs best restaurants accompanied by fine wines of the region and the champagnes produced here, as recommended by the house sommelier. Another example of architectural bravura is the monumental glass roof covering the underground layer of Roman remains. The second stop on our tour of the World Heritage Site is the Peter and Paul Grave. Following this octagonal grave we come to the Pitcher Grave. Its name derives from the painted pitcher and glass depicted in the small recess in the northern wall of what was once a barrel vaulted tomb. At 8 and 14 Apáca Street (3), we may find a cemetery chapel and a double grave with painted walls, whilst walking a little further down Jókai Street we may find the remains of a Roman-period dwelling and the apses of the attached three-nave bath in the Római-udvar (4) (Roman Court). Pécs Pécs of the Turkish period 10 11 If you are hungry we recommend: Kalamáris Restaurant (6) (30 Rákóczi Road) Taste, style and quality fitting descriptions for this facility, in which gastronomy and art are harmoniously fused together. We begin our Turkish tour with the largest Muslim temple in Central Europe, the Mosque of Gázi Kászim pasha (1). We may see, in what today is a Catholic church, fine calligraphic quotations from the Koran, the mihrab, or prayer recess, in the south-eastern wall pointing towards Mecca and a period container for holy water. Walking along one of the town s most beautiful pedestrian streets, Ferencesek Street we come to the remains of the Baths of Memi pasha (2). We may only imagine the pomp of the formerly vaulted building on the basis of the extant partial reconstruction. Just a few paces from here we find the Mosque of Jakováli Hasszán pasha (3), which has remained intact along with its minaret, and which still functions today as a place of worship. It is unusual in the way in which its outstanding acoustics were ensured with the building of jugs into the walls. We could spend the whole day studying the Turkish period, in which case we need to walk further in the town. The keel-arch windows of the Turkish architecture may still be seen in the Church of Saint Augustus (4) (pages 20-21) in Ágoston Square. On Rókus Hill, in the garden of the Children s Clinic, we may find the Grave (Türbe) of Idrisz Baba (5) (pages 20-21), one of the most worthy examples of Turkish architecture in our country. The thousand-year-old Pécs Bishopric The four-towered Saint Peter Cathedral (1) is the emblematic building of Pécs. Even if you have only half a day to spend in town you should not miss it! The building of the predecessor of today s cathedral, the seat of the Pécs Bishopric, began in 1009, during the reign of King Peter Orseolo. Only the crypt remains of the 11th Century cathedral, which at its time was the fourth largest in Europe. visitpecs.hu
Pécs The thousand-year-old Pécs Bishopric 12 13 For believers we recommend an afternoon visit to Máriagyűd, where you may marvel at the pilgrimage centre for so many from far away, thanks to the Croatian, German and Hungarian tribute to the Virgin Mary. To the east of Pécs we may find another religious shrine. According to tradition the legendary 11th century Queen Margaret of Scotland was born in Réka Castle in Mecseknádasd. With the arrival of the good weather you can enjoy the bustling atmosphere of Pécs street life on the terrace which seats 120 guests. During the course of many redevelopments its style has developed into the Neo-Romanesque form that it enjoys today. In the side chapels the paintings of Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz may be seen. During the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1990 the Cathedral was raised to the status of Basilica Minor. The mediaval and renaissance sculptural memorials of the building - such as the originals of the reliefs on the stairs down to the crypt, copied by György Zala - may be found in the adjacent Cathedral Museum and Lapidary (2). Stepping out of the cold of the cathedral, a sculpture depicting Franz Liszt may be seen on the right side of the square on a balcony of the Bishop s Palace. The sculpture was erected as a memorial to the composer s visit to Pécs. Walking a little further we may find the collection of Bishop György Klimó in Szepessy Ignác Street, one of the richest sources of Hungarian and European cultural history. Pécs the town of Zsolnay ceramics visitpecs.hu The character of the city is partly provided by the rich ceramic decoration of various facades and the coloured, patterned roofs originating from the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture, which has been functioning in Pécs for over 150 years.
Pécs The town of Zsolnay ceramics 14 15 Factory owner Vilmos Zsolnay, who was to become a symbol of creativity and innovation, won many of the most important prizes at trade fairs and exhibitions, thanks to his technological and artistic ingenuity; from Vienna to Torino and Paris to California. Today fashion designer KATTI ZOÓB is designing jewellery based on Zsolnay eosin. Eosin is the name given to a kind of reduction glaze. After applying the metal glazes and firing, the vessel takes on an iridescent metallic lustre. The outstanding project attached to the Cultural Capital of Europe event will be the development of the Zsolnay Cultural District (1) within the 35,000 m² area of the current ceramics factory. The oeuvre of the Zsolnay factory may be studied in the recently renovated Zsolnay Museum (2) (2 Káptalan Street). One of the finest examples of the public sculptures of the factory is the bull shead Zsolnay fountain (3) found on the corner of Széchenyi Square. In this square it is worth stopping to look at the façade of County Hall (4) (9 Széchenyi Square), where the symbols of the former savings bank are still present in the ceramic work. It is only a few steps from here to the Zsolnay sales outlet (5) (2 Jókai Square) where small memorial gifts, jewellery and even more serious dinner services may be purchased. We could spend a whole day studying the Zsolnay heritage in a walk around the centre of this Mediterranean-climate city. In the main pedestrian street, Király (King) Street, we may find the modern ceramic frieze on the Pécs National Theatre (1 Színház Square). A little further along the Neo- Renaissance decoration of the Vasváry House (6) (19 Király Street) is worthy of note, whilst one street down lies the Csukás House (7) (14 Perczel Street). Before going downhill from Jókai Square to the Post Office Palace (9) (10 Jókai Street), we must not miss the listed Szerecsen Pharmacy (8) (1 Apáca Street), and opposite to the post office we can find the Vine Fountain (10). The recently restored 100 hundred year old Zsolnay memorial sculpture (11) stands at the junction of Szabadság Road and Rákóczi Road. A little further from the town centre, the former Vasváry Villa (12) at 44 Jurisics Street (today the regional centre of the Hungarian Academy of Science) on the side of Mecsek Hill is not to be missed. Pécs the city of modern arts A visitor to Pécs desiring to become acquainted with the individual artistic values of the city can choose at will from a colourful and varied palette. It is worth beginning our tour at the locally known museum street, i.e. Káptalan Street and the Vasarely Museum (1) (3 Káptalan Street). Győző Vásárhelyi was born in Pécs and the permanent collection of the artist who invented Op-art is one of the city s outstanding collections. The Pécs collection covers the early Bauhaus-influenced period, then ranges from the analytical-geometrical graphics through to the architectonic Op-art works, covering almost his entire oeuvre. Pécs The city of modern arts 16 17 In the neighbouring street, Janus Pannonius Street, we may find the museum of the solitary giant of Hungarian painting Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry (2) (11 Janus Pannonius Street). Csontváry was one of the most significant advocates of plein-air painting, creating such works as the Lonely Cypress and the Greek Theatre in Taormina. The artist s career lasted only fifteen years or so and he produced only just over one hundred works, yet even so he is one of the most important representatives of modern painting. His works belong amongst the universal artists of the Post Impressionist movement. The Modern Hungarian Art Museum (3) (4 Káptalan Street) begins with the works of the founders of the Nagybánya School, outstanding artists of the turn of the century (e.g. Rippl- Rónai) and the Eights (Pór, Czóbel, etc.), followed by the avant-garde artists of the 1920 s (e.g. Moholy-Nagy) and outstanding works from the Szentendre School. In the garden of the museum we may walk amongst the modern sculptures of Pierre Székely s Stone Garden (4). The second part of the collection may be found in Papnövelde Street, in which we find a range of works from the second half of the 50 s up to contemporary art. Going further along the museum street we find a modern building which houses Erzsébet Schaár s Street (5) (5 Káptalan Street). Pécs not only boasts significant museums but also has a thriving contemporary art scene. The Pécs Gallery (6) (10 Széchenyi Square) shows fine examples of Hungarian and international contemporary art and Biennales on a monthly basis, whilst the Kisgaléria (Small Gallery) (7) (4 Szent István Square) tends to show individual exhibitions from various periods. The Parti Gallery (8) (1 Mária Street) was Pécs city s first, professional private gallery showing top quality contemporary art.
