The Associate Degree Nursing Program at Thomas Nelson Community College has as its mission to empower students to obtain the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to successfully apply for the National Council for Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, to become safe providers of patient-centered care, to be competitive in a global healthcare market, and to become lifelong learners. The nursing program will anticipate and shape the future by providing individualized, flexible, technologically advanced education in a supportive environment that meets the diverse and evolving needs of its student body and the community. This program of study is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills required for employment as entry-level registered nurses in physician s offices, clinics, hospitals, long term care facilities, and mental health facilities. This program of study allows students the opportunity to articulate to a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) at four-year colleges and universities. Students should contact the specific four-year institution for further information. This program is fully approved by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing. The program is also accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta GA 30326 (www.acenursing.org) Nursing Program Outcomes The program outcomes reflect the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) 2013 Standards and Criteria. The licensure pass rate for Thomas Nelson Community College graduates on the NCLEX-RN for first time takers will be 100%. Eighty percent of students who are admitted into the Thomas Nelson Community College nursing program will complete the program within three years. Ninety percent of Thomas Nelson Community College nursing graduates will rate overall program satisfaction at average or above average. Ninety percent of Thomas Nelson Community College nursing graduates seeking employment will be employed within one year after graduation. Ninety percent of Thomas Nelson Community College nursing graduate employers will rate satisfaction of new graduate performance at average or above average within one year after graduation.
Nursing Graduate Outcomes Upon completion of the nursing program, graduates will be able to: Apply the nursing process to provide safe, patient-centered care to diverse populations. Apply principles from nursing theory, the humanities, natural, and psychosocial sciences when providing safe, patient-centered care to diverse populations. Demonstrate the ability to utilize therapeutic communication techniques when providing safe, patient-centered care to diverse populations. Demonstrate collaboration and teamwork to effectively function as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team when providing care to diverse populations. Demonstrate individual accountability and responsibility for personal, professional, and leadership development. Integrate evidence-based practice, professional guidelines from the Commonwealth of Virginia Board for Nursing Nurse Practice Act, and the QSEN core competencies for associate degree graduates. Demonstrate the ability to locate, utilize, and evaluate various information types from diverse sources. Additional Information: BIO courses used to satisfy degree requirements must be taken within ten years of application to the program. Nursing program promotion policy requires that students complete BIO 101, BIO 141, BIO 142, BIO 150 and ENG 111 with a grade of C or higher. Students intending to pursue a bachelor s degree may opt to complete HLT 230 instead of HLT 138. Students will be required to submit a course substitution form to the nursing department of health professions division office upon completion of alternate courses.
