4 05-06 Catalog The Emporia State University Department of Nursing, is a department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and offers a four year baccalaureate nursing program that prepares graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to function as professional nurses. Students completing the program earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. There are two educational tracks leading to the BSN. The majority of students will complete the required 8 credit hours to earn the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The nursing curriculum usually requires three years for completion once admitted into the major. Graduates of ESU Department of Nursing are eligible to take the national licensure examination for registered nursing (NCLEX-RN). The program also offers the RN-to-BSN educational track for registered nurses seeking to earn their BSN. An individual who has completed a nursing program and is licensed in Kansas as a registered nurse (RN) may apply for admission as an articulating student to the Department of Nursing at Emporia State University (ESU). The student must first meet with an articulation advisor in the Department of Nursing to develop the proposed plan of study by contacting the Department of Nursing at (60) , extension The Department of Nursing at Emporia State University (ESU) may admit up to forty-four students annually for the generic nursing class seeking the BSN and up to 0 students seeking the RN-to-BSN. Admission to the Department of Nursing is competitive and requires a specific application and review process. BSN Admission Requirements Admission to Emporia State University Completion of Department of Nursing Application Procedure Applications for admission to the nursing major are due MAY for August entry. Completion of Prerequisite Courses Applicants should have completed the following 0 credit hours by the end of the spring semester of the application year. Applicants who need to complete no more than 6 nursing prerequisite hours in summer school should submit with the application a written request for special consideration. The 0 credit hours must be completed by the end of the summer semester of the application year. English I (EG0) English II (EG0) Math (MA0*) Biology (GB40*) Biology Lab (GB4*) Chemistry (CH0*) Chemistry Lab (CH*) Introductory Psychology (PY00) Developmental Psychology (PY) Public Speaking (SP0) Introduction to Sociology (SO0*) *May choose any course that meets general education requirements. Achievement of at least the Minimum Admission Grade Point Average (GPA) Grades earned in the admission prerequisite courses will be used to calculate the Department of Nursing admission GPA. A minimum Department of Nursing admission GPA of.5 with at least a C in the admission prerequisite courses is required; however, admission to the nursing major is competitive.
5 05-06 Catalog Achievement of at least the Proficient Level on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), Version V This required standardized pre-admission test must be completed as part of the application process and applicants must achieve at least the proficient level. Test information, including testing dates, is available from the Department of Nursing and web site. Students are responsible for reserving a test date and time and for paying the costs associated with the pre-admission test before May. Foreign Born or Non-native English Speaking Students In addition to the above admission requirements, a student born outside of the United States is required to submit proof that he or she has successfully completed the TOEFL ibt (Test of English as a Foreign Language- Internet Based Test). Be advised that by current Kansas law, the Kansas State Board of Nursing may refuse licensure to applicants with certain arrests, misdemeanors, and felonies. For more information, contact the state board of nursing in the state where you intend to practice. The Department of Nursing reserves the right to refuse admission or progression to an applicant or student who has been convicted as a felon or has otherwise committed offenses inappropriate for a nurse. RN-to-BSN Degree Completion Requirements The BSN degree requires a minimum of 6 credits with at least 66 credits in non-nursing courses and 60 credits in nursing. Non-Nursing Courses The minimum of 66 credits in non-nursing courses include at least 45 credits in required general education courses and credits in cognate courses that support the nursing curriculum. General Education Requirements The minimum of 45 credit hours in general education courses provide students with the foundation for the baccalaureate degree in nursing. Collectively, the general education courses are at the core of the college experience and offer a coherent, well-rounded curriculum, consisting of a body of knowledge and skills designed to prepare a person to function successfully and effectively in a global society and workplace (ESU Undergraduate Catalog). Cognate Course Requirements The cognate courses have been selected to enhance the depth of understanding of the student's education and to support the nursing curriculum. At least credits of cognates are required for the baccalaureate in nursing degree. Nursing Courses The 60 credit hours of required nursing courses include 8 credit hours of upper division nursing courses and credit hours that are transcripted to ESU based on RN licensure. Required Upper Division Nursing Courses During the nursing program, students will be required to enroll in 8 credit hours of upper division nursing courses at Emporia State University Department of Nursing. Courses will be completed through a combination of presentation methodologies: web-enhanced courses, precepted courses, seminar courses, and/or face-to-face courses. Nursing Course Credits Transcripted To ESU A licensed RN admitted to the Department of Nursing will receive credit for hours of nursing courses based on successful graduation from an accredited associate degree or diploma nursing program and documentation of current Kansas licensure without restrictions as a Registered Nurse. The credits granted will be posted to the student s transcript the semester prior to graduation.
6 05-06 Catalog The Admission Requirements for the RN-to-BSN are: Meet with a Department of Nursing Articulation Advisor to develop a proposed plan of study An individualized curriculum plan of study must be completed for each articulating RN student. To develop the individualized curriculum plan of study, the student must consult with a Department of Nursing Articulation Advisor prior to applying to the program. Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree must be completed within five years of the admission to the Department of Nursing for articulating students. Current Kansas Licensure Without Restrictions as a Registered Nurse Completion of Admission Prerequisite Courses Applicants should have completed the following 0 credit hours by the beginning of the semester they plan to begin the articulation program.
