Introduction to Evaluating StoneGate FW/VPN in VMware Workstation The purpose of the StoneGate Firewall/VPN evaluation is to offer the users of VMware Workstation the possibility to test the StoneGate Firewall/VPN in a virtual environment, before purchasing production-ready StoneGate Firewall/VPN appliance for VMware ESX Server environment. This document provides basic guidelines for downloading and configuring the StoneGate Firewall/VPN into VMware Workstation environment for evaluation purposes. There are three installation options: either the Firewall/VPN and StoneGate Management Center (SMC) which controls the firewall can be installed inside the Virtual Machine in the VMware Workstation host (Scenario 1), the SMC can be installed to a separate physical computer (or also an already existing installation of SMC can be used (Scenario 2)), or all the components can be installed into one Virtual Machine (Scenario 3). 1 StoneGate Firewall/VPN How-To

For additional instructions on StoneGate installation, refer to StoneGate Installation Guide. Prerequisites To be able to configure and evaluate the StoneGate FW/VPN, you must have an installed and correctly configured VMware Workstation, version 6.0 (or newer), for Windows or Linux environment. Before configuring the StoneGate FW/VPN, you must define and connect the VMware Workstation interfaces to match your testing environment. The VMware Guest device has been set up as follows: Memory: 256 MB Hard Disk: 2.0G Ethernet: Bridged Ethernet 2: Host-only The above suggestions are default values, and can be changed, if necessary. Also, the number and configuration of Ethernet interfaces can be changed. For additional information on VMware Workstation configuration, refer to VMware product documentation. Installation Instructions The main installation steps for StoneGate Firewall/VPN evaluation are as follows: 1. Plan the IP addresses of the system (SMC IP address and FW/VPN control IP address). 2. Download the StoneGate evaluation licence from the Stonesoft licence download area: https://my.stonesoft.com/license/evaluatestonegate.do. Note To get the evaluation licence, you need to input the IP addresses defined in Step 1. 3. Download the StoneGate Firewall/VPN VMware evaluation software file and StoneGate Management Center installation file from the Stonesoft download area: https://my.stonesoft.com/download.do. 4. Unpack the downloaded evaluation software file and save the resulting files on the desktop. 2 StoneGate Firewall/VPN How-To

The downloaded evaluation software zip-file contains two files, a.vmx file, which contains the configuration, and a.vmdk file, which contains the StoneGate FW/VPN. 5. Start VMware Workstation. 6. Open the.vmx file in the VMware Workstation/VMware ESX Server with the command File Open. You will see the following message: Select I copied it and click OK. The StoneGate Firewall/VPN configuration sequence begins. 7. Configure the StoneGate Firewall/VPN and StoneGate Management Center as instructed in the StoneGate Installation Guide. For more information on using StoneGate, refer to the Online Help system or StoneGate Administrator s Guide. For background information on how the system works, consult the StoneGate Reference Guide. 3 StoneGate Firewall/VPN How-To
