9 Chapter 1 Overview of Package Anomaly Add-on for Veritas Operations Manager This chapter includes the following topics: About Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on Features of Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on Prerequisites for installing Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on About Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on To take advantage of vendor-specific technological expertise and minimize dependency on single product or technology, today organizations invest in truly heterogeneous storage environment. A typical enterprise s datacenter contains a large number of servers. These servers are grouped in clusters, business units, or any other group depending on their main usage. All the servers in a group are expected to be similar as far as the installed packages and patches are concerned. In large enterprises, the installations are usually carried out using automated tools. Thus, the installed packages are identical on all the servers belonging to a group. However, subsequent fixing, tweaking, and other maintenance activities may lead to disparity in package configuration. It becomes a complicated task for the administrator to monitor and maintain these packages considering the high number of such installations. The Veritas

10 10 Overview of Package Anomaly Add-on for Veritas Operations Manager Features of Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on lets you automate the package installations, and generate the report that contains package installation anomalies across your datacenter. It provides you with an end-to-end visibility across your datacenter. The Package Anomaly Add-on lets you compare all the servers against a set of packages and patches. It helps you find the systems that are non-standard, or have installations different than other similar systems. The Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on 4.1 is compatible with Veritas Operations Manager 3.1, and later. Features of Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on The Package Anomaly Add-on provides the following features to the users: Ability to select one or more objects and run the Package Anomaly Add-on. Provides a single view of all selected systems, installed packages, their current state (installed, not installed, and version) in the graphical view. Prerequisites for installing Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on Before you install Veritas Operations Manager Package Anomaly Add-on, ensure that the following pre-requisites are met: You have installed Veritas Operations Manager 3.1, or later. You are logged on as domain administrator.

You can filter the available systems based on business entity or the operating system. To run the Package Anomaly Add-on on selected objects 1 In the Veritas Operations Manager console, do one of the following: Click Manage > Hosts. Under the Hosts table, click Actions > Package Anomaly Map. Click Solutions. Under the Package Anomaly Map section, select Package Anomaly Map. 2 In the Package Anomaly Map panel, select how do you want to filter the managed hosts - based on business entity, or based on the hosts' operating systems. Select the grouping criterion for the managed hosts with package anomalies. See Package anomaly map panel options on page Click OK.

12 12 Using Package Anomaly Add-on 4.1 Viewing the results of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the Graphical view Package anomaly map panel options Use this panel to select the scope to run Package Anomaly Add-on on the managed hosts. You can select the managed hosts based on business entity and platform. The combination of these two parameters lets you further refine your selection criterion. For example, if you select BE as a business entity and Linux as the platform, only Linux based managed hosts under the BE business entity are selected. Table 2-1 Fields Business Entity Platform Group systems by Package Anomaly Map options Description Select the business entity as the scope to run the add-on. All managed hosts in the business entity are selected for the analysis of anomalies. Select the platform. It lets you select host based on their operating systems. Determines the managed host grouping criteria. If you select Cluster, the managed hosts are grouped and displayed as per their respective clusters. See Running Package Anomaly Add-on on selected objects on page 11. Viewing the results of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the Graphical view Use this page to view the results of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the graphical view. Based on your selection (business entity, operating system, or both), the package installation details are displayed. The packages are listed vertically, and the systems are displayed horizontally. These systems may be grouped under clusters depending on the specified grouping criterion. Each cell in the grid represents a system-package combination. Click the specific cell to view more information about the system, package, patch, and the installation state. The displayed package installation states are: Not installed: Managed hosts where the package is not installed. Installed: Managed hosts where the package is installed. Version mismatch: Managed hosts where a different version of package is installed.

13 Using Package Anomaly Add-on 4.1 Viewing the results of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the Textual view 13 To view the results of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the graphical view 1 In the Veritas Operations Manager console, do one of the following: Click Manage > Hosts. Under the Hosts table, click Actions > Package Anomaly Map. Click Solutions. Under the Package Anomaly Map section, click Package Anomaly Map. 2 In the Package Anomaly Map panel, enter the required information, and then click OK. See Package anomaly map panel options on page In the Package Anomaly Detection page, under the Graphical View tab, you can view the results. Viewing the results of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the Textual view Use this page to view the result of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the textual view. Review the following information on this page: System: The name of the system. Package/patch: The name of the package or patch. Resolution: Action that you need to perform on the system. For example, if the package is not installed, you need to install the package on the system. If the version is not correct, you need to upgrade the package on the system. To view the results of Package Anomaly Add-on run in the textual view 1 In the Veritas Operations Manager console, do one of the following: Click Manage > Hosts. Under the Hosts table, click Actions > Package Anomaly Map.

Under the Package Anomaly Map section, click Package Anomaly Map. 2 In the Package Anomaly Map panel, enter the required information, and then click OK.
