Installing the SIM Card You must install the SIM card into the 3G modem before you can configure the modem. To simplify the installation process, we recommend that you disable the PIN code on the SIM card before installing the SIM card (for example, by using a mobile phone). SIM card SIM card tray (opened) To install the SIM card into the modem 1. Remove the protective cover from the modem. See Parts and Indicator Lights (page 7). 2. Carefully pull out the SIM card tray that is located next to the USB plug of the modem. 3. Insert a SIM card into the tray. 10 Installing the SIM Card
Make sure that the beveled corner of the SIM card is facing the top of the modem. 4. Push the SIM card tray back in. Proceed to Connecting the External Antenna. Connecting the External Antenna For optimal modem performance and speed, it is recommended to always use the external antenna with the modem. To connect the external antenna 1. Locate the external antenna included in the delivery. 2. Open the protective cover of the antenna connector at the side of the modem and pull the cover out slightly. See Parts and Indicator Lights (page 7). 3. Insert the antenna cable firmly to the antenna connector. 4. Attach the antenna to the wall with the two 3M Dual Lock fastening strips that are included in the delivery. Attach one strip to the surface of the antenna and the other strip to the wall surface to which you want to attach the antenna. Both strips are self-adhesive. Connecting the External Antenna 11
Position the antenna in such a way that the transmission level is optimal (for example, near a window that faces the direction of a base station). Proceed to Connecting the 3G Modem to an Appliance. Connecting the 3G Modem to an Appliance To connect the 3G modem to a Stonesoft appliance, you must insert the modem in a USB port on the appliance. For safety reasons, it is recommended to use the USB extension cable when connecting the 3G modem to an appliance. To connect the modem to an appliance 1. Locate the USB extension cable included in the delivery. 2. Attach the USB extension cable to the USB plug of the modem. 3. Connect the USB extension cable to a USB port on a Stonesoft appliance. Proceed to Initial Configuration (page 13). 12 Connecting the 3G Modem to an Appliance
Initial Configuration This section explains the basic steps in configuring the 3G modem for use with a Stonesoft appliance. For detailed information on configuring the appliance, see the Appliance Installation Guide delivered with the appliance. The use of the 3G modem is only supported on specific Stonesoft appliance models of the following types: appliances that have pre-installed Firewall software appliances that have pre-installed Security Engine software and are used in the Firewall role. To start using the appliance, you must activate the network interfaces and establish a secure connection to the Management Server. Note The appliance must contact the Management Server before it can be operational. There are two ways to start using the 3G modem. You can configure the modem after you have configured the appliance and the appliance has made initial contact with the Management Server. See Using the 3G Modem With a Configured Appliance (page 14). You can configure the appliance and the modem at the same time. See Using the 3G Modem With a New Appliance (page 14). Initial Configuration 13
Using the 3G Modem With a Configured Appliance To use the 3G modem with a configured appliance 1. Configure the Modem Interface in the Single Firewall element properties through the Management Client. Fill in the Modem Interface details according to the information you have received from your service provider. 2. Insert the 3G modem in one of the USB ports on the appliance. 3. Refresh the Firewall Policy on the engine in the Management Client to transfer the configuration changes. Using the 3G Modem With a New Appliance To use the 3G modem with a new appliance 1. Create the Single Firewall element in the Management Client. 2. Configure the Firewall interfaces, including the Modem Interface. Fill in the Modem Interface details according to the information you have received from your service provider. 3. Save the engine s initial configuration on a USB stick or upload the initial configuration on the Stonesoft Installation Server. 4. Connect the cables to the appliance according to the instructions in the appliance-specific Appliance Installation Guide. 14 Initial Configuration
5. (If the initial configuration is on a USB stick) Insert the USB stick on which the initial configuration was saved in one of the USB ports on the appliance. 6. Insert the 3G modem in one of the USB ports on the appliance. 7. Boot up the appliance. If the initial configuration was saved on a USB stick, the appliance automatically imports the configuration from the USB stick and then tries to make initial contact with the Management Server. If the initial configuration was uploaded to the Stonesoft Installation Server, the appliance tries to contact the Installation Server to fetch the initial configuration. It then tries to contact the Management Server. 8. After the appliance has made initial contact with the Management Server, install the Firewall Policy on the engine in the Management Client. If there are problems with importing the initial configuration from the USB stick, the appliance fails to contact the Stonesoft Installation Server, or the initial contact to the Management Server fails, it may be necessary to configure the Modem Interface settings and the settings for contacting the Management Server in the Engine Configuration Wizard. See the Firewall/VPN Installation Guide for more details. Note You can (re)start the Engine Configuration Wizard at any time using the sg-reconfigure command on the engine command line. Initial Configuration 15
Changing the SIM Card To simplify the process of changing the SIM card, we recommend that you disable the PIN code on the new SIM card before you install it in the modem (for example, by using a mobile phone). Caution The modem must always be disconnected from the appliance before changing the SIM card. To change the SIM card 1. Disconnect the modem s USB extension cable from the USB port on the appliance. 2. Carefully pull out the SIM card tray. 3. Remove the existing SIM card from the tray. 4. Insert the new SIM card into the tray. 5. Push the SIM card tray back in. 6. Attach the modem s USB extension cable to the USB port on the appliance. 7. Modify the Modem Interface details in the Single Firewall element properties in the Management Client according to the information you have received from your service provider. 8. Refresh the Firewall Policy on the engine in the Management Client to transfer the configuration changes. 16 Changing the SIM Card
