Introduction to the Speaking Test Foundation Tier The test is conducted by the teacher and recorded for marking. It should take about 10 minutes altogether. It is worth 25% of the marks for GCSE and is marked out of 80. The examination should be conducted in the following order: Role-plays, candidate s presentation and conversation. The candidate has 10 minutes to prepare for Role-plays. Candidates are not permitted to use a dictionary for the Speaking Test. Role-plays 16 Marks Two Role-plays containing four tasks each. The candidate has 10 minutes to prepare for the Role-plays. The candidate may use the CCEA pro forma to make written notes. These may be brought into the examination. At the end of the examination the candidate should return the pro forma to his/her teacher, who will forward this to CCEA. The settings and responses provided are intended to assist teachers in the conduct of the Role-play tests and to help standardize the responses made by candidates, thus making for greater reliability in the marking of the tests. On the Foundation Tier Role-play, teachers are asked to adhere strictly to the responses. Teachers must not, however, help the candidate, either by translating or by suggesting words to use, as no marks can then be awarded. Presentation 26 Marks The candidate talks about a topic of his/her choice from the CCEA GCSE Specification for 1 minute. The candidate may use the CCEA pro forma to write five short headings. Each heading should contain no more than five words. The candidate may look over the pro forma during the preparation time, and may bring this into the examination. In response to questions from the teacher, the candidate should talk about two topics. The conversation should last for not less than four minutes and not more than five minutes. This timing must be strictly adhered to. A Grid, which illustrates the conversation topics for each timetabled Role-play session is included on page 5.
