Safety Information 3M SelfCheck System C-Series C1 Model 877 Read, understand, and follow all safety information contained in these instructions prior to and during the installation of the SelfCheck System. Retain these instructions for future reference. Intended Use The 3M SelfCheck System C-Series C1 Model 877 is intended for use by library patrons in checking RFID-tagged books back into a library with minimal assistance by library staff. The system must be installed as specified in the 3M SelfCheck System C-Series Contractor s Package. It is intended for use in a library environment, and has not been evaluated for other uses or locations. System Overview 3M SelfCheck System C-Series C1 Model 877 The 3M SelfCheck System C-Series C1 Model 877 is an automatic book return that checks in items equipped with 3M RFID Tags as they pass through a chute. The chute with faceplate is mounted through a wall inside or outside the library building. All of the SelfCheck System electronic components are kept within the interior of the building. If more than one chute is to be installed, install chutes no closer than 12 in. [30.5 cm] apart, as shown at right. A 12 in. [30.5 cm] minimum distance must be maintained between coaxial cables from each chute. Maintain sufficient distance between the chute and any large metal objects, electrical wiring, or equipment to avoid electromagnetic interference (EMI). Keep the chute away from other 3M RFID equipment by at least the following recommended minimum distances: Detection System Model 8800, 4 ft. [1.21 m]. Pad Staff Workstation Model 895, 2 ft. [61 cm]. Electrical outlet The customer must supply an electrical outlet within six feet [1.8 m] (cable-run distance) maximum of the outlet box. A dedicated 100/120 VAC, 15A circuit is recommended to prevent overloading. Circuit loading must not exceed 50% of the rated circuit current to help ensure voltage stability. Faceplate options 3M-supplied Faceplates 3M offers two faceplate options. Extended faceplate 21 in. [533 mm] 18 7/8 in. [479 mm] 10 in. [254 mm] The extended faceplate option (Figure 3) can be used for drive-up book drops. The flat faceplate (Figure 4) is typically used for walk-up book drops. Item opening: 14 7/8 in. x 3 1/2 in. Customer-supplied Faceplate Requirements A custom, customersupplied faceplate must meet the dimensional requirements for the system. Custom faceplates supplied by the customer must be designed to mount to the framing shown in Figure 8 on page 8. Contractor Installation Instructions 3M SelfCheck System C-Series C1 Model 877 The contractor must follow these installation instructions to help ensure that the system performs as designed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in reduced effectiveness of your 3M SelfCheck System. The customer must follow all applicable federal, state, and local codes when planning and completing the installation of this equipment. Before you begin 1 Read and understand all installation instructions before starting this installation procedure. 2 If there are any questions, contact 3M Library Systems Technical Service at 1-800-328-0067 (U.S. only). Step 2 Determine the proper height for the SelfCheck System Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements The wall opening elevations in Figure 7 shows the required height for ADA compliance for each of the 3M Faceplate Options. Step 3 Create and frame the wall opening Once you determine the optimal location for the chute, the wall opening must be cut and framed to support the chute through the wall. Wall Construction Frame the wall opening using the dimensions shown in Figure 8. Installation requires wood or metal framing materials that will accept the #8 screws supplied with the system. This illustration shows a typical 2 x 4 (1-1/2 in. [38 mm] x 3-1/2 in. [89 mm]) framing with 5/8 in. [16 mm] gypsum board construction, with all framing members (studs, header, sill members, etc.) covered so as to not be visible. Top view 16-7/8 in. ± 1/8 in. [429 mm ± 3 mm] 5-1/2 in. [140 mm] 877_CP_011 RF shield The chute enclosure functions as RF shielding and helps prevent the system from reading RFID tags of items that may be brought near the chute but not passed through it. Step 4 Attach the side brackets to the chute 1 Determine the mounting orientation for the side brackets. (See Figure 9.) 2 Layout the holes required to mount the side brackets to the chute: a b c d Insert the chute into the opening so that the front of the chute is flush with the exterior wall. Make sure that the chute is placed in the final mounting position. Place the side bracket where it will be mounted on the chute. The bracket should lie flush to the chute and the wall as shown in Figure 9. Thin walls may require a spacer between the wall and the bracket as shown in Figure 10. On the chute, mark the three holes where the bracket will be attached to the chute. Repeat for the other side bracket. 877_CP_013 For most installations, the brackets attach to the side of the chute and the interior wall surface. 877_CP_014 For installations with thick walls, the side brackets may be attached on the top surface of the chute and to the inside of the wall. Figure 9: Determine the mounting orientation for the side brackets. Side view 3 Attach the side brackets to the chute: a Drill three 0.147 in. (#26 drill / 3.7 mm) holes in the chute in the locations marked above. Insert #8-32 thread-forming screws from outside of chute. (6 places). b c Attach the bracket to the chute using three #8-32 thread-forming screws. Repeat for the other side bracket. 877_CP_015 You may need to add wood spacer blocks behind brackets to align bracket holes with chute. Step 5 Attach the chute assembly to the wall opening 1 Insert the chute into the opening so that the front of the chute is flush with the outside surface of the exterior wall. Inside of chute. Front of chute is flush with opening. 877_CP_017a 2 Use three (3) #8 x 1 1/2 in. screws through holes in bottom of chute to attach the chute to the bottom of the wall opening. 877_CP_017b 3 Pull the top of the chute forward until the front of the chute is flush with the wall opening at the top and install two (2) #8 x 1-1/2 in. screws through upper holes in each side of chute. Chute is flush with outside Of wall opening at top. 877_CP_017c 4 Install remaining two (2) #8 x 1 1/2 in. screws through lower holes in each side of the chute to complete fastening chute to wall opening. 877_CP_017d Figure 11: Attach the chute to the wall opening. 10 78-7129-2210-8 Rev. Step 6 Attach the two side brackets to the wall The two side brackets help secure the chute assembly to the wall. Use six #8 x 1 ½ in. screws to attach each side bracket to the wall. Step 7 Install the faceplate 1 Apply caulk or sealant appropriate to the site to the faceplate as shown in Figure 13. 1 Apply caulk or sealant in a continuous bead approximately 1/2 inch [13 mm] from all edges of the back of the faceplate. 877_CP_020 Figure 13: Apply caulk or sealant to the faceplate as shown. 2 Use four (4) tamper-proof screws to attach the faceplate to the exterior wall. Two sets of different length screws (1 1/2-inch and 3 1/2- inch) are provided. Select the length required to securely attach the faceplate to the framing studs. Make sure to align the faceplate as shown in Figure 14. A special tool is provided to install these screws. Front view Insert ONE item at a time Side view 1 in. Appendix A: Warranty Effective 12-12-05 One Year Library Systems Product Performance Guarantee: Subject to the Limitation of Liability below, 3M guarantees your satisfaction with the performance of any 3M Library System Product for 12 months from the date of installation provided that a) you are the original purchaser: b) you have executed a one (1) year 3M Service Agreement for maintenance of the Library System product; and c) the product has not been subjected to abuse, misuse, accident or neglect. Performance means the product meets 3M published product specifications. If you are not completely satisfied with the performance of your Library System Product, you may return the Library System product for a prompt refund. 3M will pay all reasonable de-installation and shipping charges to return the product to 3M. Note that all claims under this guarantee must be submitted to 3M within 12 months from the date of installation of the 3M Library Systems Product. Failure to submit a claim within this time frame will invalidate this guarantee. IMPORTANT: Consumables and non-3m branded products are excluded from this Guarantee. Warranty and Limited Remedy for Non-Software Library Systems Products Not Covered by Performance Guarantee: Unless stated otherwise in 3M product literature or packaging, 3M warrants that each 3M Library Systems Product meets the applicable specifications for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of shipment (or, in the case of hardware installed by 3M, from the date of installation). Any warranties related to 3M software are contained in separate 3M software licenses. Consumables and non-3m branded products are excluded from this Warranty and Limited Remedy. 3M MAKES NO OTHER GUARANTEES, WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OR CONDITION OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OR CONDITION ARISING OUT OF A COURSE OF DEALING, CUSTOM OR USAGE OF TRADE.
