The Telfer Master of Health Administration Do you have a passion for health? Are you passionate about improving health services, expanding access to essential care and state-of-theart treatments, and ensuring healthcare personnel and systems enhance the lives of Canadians? So are we. For close to 50 years, the Telfer Master of Health Administration (MHA) has been a vital part of this country s healthcare community. Our program is acclaimed throughout Canada for its success in preparing talented individuals to assume leadership positions at all levels of Canada s rapidly changing health system. The Telfer MHA can ensure that you gain the knowledge, skills and integrated training you need to translate your passion for healthcare into genuine results for patients. These are exciting times in the health sector. From frontline workers to administrators, all players in the health system face unprecedented challenges: improving the quality of patient care and safety, ensuring effective and efficient healthcare, integrating services delivery and mitigating the effects of resource shortages. Health systems at the provincial, national and international levels are quickly evolving; regionalization of governance, utilization of information technology to facilitate access to care and inter-disciplinary approaches provide opportunities as well as challenges. Talented, passionate healthcare professionals can lead transformation and truly make a mark in their chosen field. Ariyan Marvizi and Edmund Kwok, 2011 MHA Alumni

Where passion and excellence meet THINK LIKE A LEADER The Telfer MHA begins with two intensive courses: Management Skills and the World of the General Manager. These courses will enable you to carry out the role of a senior executive who must establish an organization s strategic goals and then allocate resources, motivate personnel and make vital tactical decisions to achieve these objectives. A SOLID FOUNDATION IN MANAGEMENT Unlike health management programs at most other schools, the Telfer MHA enables you to gain a deep appreciation of business management. Courses in key areas of modern business will arm you with the knowledge required to set budgets, understand organizational development, manage resources and supervise development of information systems. All this prepares you for opportunities both in the public and private sectors. HEALTH MANAGEMENT EXCELLENCE AND LEADERSHIP Healthcare is different from other industry sectors. The bottom line in this distinctive field is the quality of people s lives. The health management component of the Telfer MHA equips you with the vital skills and integrated training necessary not only to run, but also transform healthcare organizations and systems. Health is one of the four strategic areas of development in research at the University of Ottawa. Furthermore, health systems management is one of the strategic areas of excellence at the Telfer School. Students benefit from the wealth of interdisciplinary research on campus, along with opportunities to interact and network with faculty members and leaders from the health community. Drawing on the expertise of Telfer MHA professors and other healthcare experts, the program focuses on fostering the professional excellence and leadership skills of healthcare managers. In particular, the courses prepare you to tackle challenges unique to modern healthcare systems, such as: regionalization of health governance and integration of health services managing costs reducing wait times preventing disease, promoting health and wellness mitigating the effects of professional shortages leading teams of diverse health professionals in with one common goal improving the quality of patient care, safety and lives UNIQUE RESIDENCY PLACEMENTS The most distinctive feature of the Telfer MHA is the administrative residency. Taking place in your final academic session, your residency will enable you to work in a dynamic healthcare setting and participate in making and carrying out crucial organizational decisions. A unique opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills and put into practice your business and health management training, your residency will include the active participation of Telfer MHA faculty members, executives in residence and a preceptor. Preceptors are senior executives in host organizations who have a vested interest in cultivating the next generation of healthcare leaders. These executives ensure that students achieve their residency objectives, engage in stimulating residency projects, and forge enduring relationships with influential managers within their host organizations. They also counsel MHA students regarding potential career opportunities. Whatever your learning objectives and career aspirations, the Telfer MHA has partnered with a renowned healthcare organization that is right for you. For more information regarding the residency please consult the MHA program website www.telfer.uottawa.ca/mha. INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR Over the last few years, the MHA students had the opportunity to experience health management first hand with an international trip. They will be able to use many of the lessons learned during their trip to improve our system s successes. Previous destinations include Sweden, France, Netherland and England.

Program delivery options The Telfer MHA students take their management foundation courses as part of the Telfer MBA program, enabling them to interact with students from a variety of business and industry backgrounds. Health management courses are offered in the evenings and intensively during blocked weeks or weekends to enable full-time and part-time students to interact. The timing of lectures is conducive to inviting health leaders to share their insights and experiences to the classroom. Telfer MHA students can choose one of 2 program delivery options. Intensive Full-time 16 months This option is perfect for students who wish to quickly transition their careers to health management. As a full-time student, you will complete the program coursework in 12 months and then begin your four-month administrative residency, enabling you to hit the ground running in a health-management position in only 16 months. Professional Part-time 28 months Working professionals may complete the Telfer MHA courses over 24 months, followed by the four-month residency. Courses are offered intensively over certain blocked weeks and weekends, allowing professionals to take a slightly heavier course load during certain academic sessions to complete the course requirements in just two years with minimal disruption with their work. The program also maintains close relations with local, provincial and national leaders in the health-care sector many of whom are Telfer MHA graduates. These special contributors make it possible for the Telfer MHA to provide you with unique learning opportunities beyond the classroom: Bear Pit Sessions put healthcare leaders in the hot seat and give you a unique opportunity to delve into pressing issues in healthcare delivery, policy and governance. The Telfer School s partnership with the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) gives students a unique opportunity to network with health executives at the Healthcare Leadership Professional Development Series. Telfer MHA students can also use their academic credits towards a designation as a Certified Health Executive, giving them access to many high-quality professional development programs and services. For more information please visit the CCHL website www.cchl-ccls.ca. STRONG TIES TO ALUMNI Many Telfer MHA graduates have risen to senior positions in hospitals, continuing care, mental health, federal and provincial government departments, and national and provincial associations and organizations. Graduates maintain close contact with fellow alumni and with the Telfer School through the MHA Alumni Association. This vital group creates a strong sense of collegiality among graduates, provides students with opportunities for professional development, mentoring and creates mutually beneficial relationships among students, graduates and faculty. These relationships help students make smooth transitions from the classroom to working life. OUR ALUMNI The Telfer MHA is more than just a diploma. It is a passport that enables students to embark on a lifelong journey of educational, personal and professional development. The Telfer MHA provided me with a perfect balance of healthcare and business administration. I have greater insight into the history of the Canadian healthcare system and an understanding of our successes, challenges and opportunities for improvement. I also gained valuable skills in financial analysis, performance management, and leadership. The Telfer MHA program has provided me with a solid foundation upon which to build my career, and the tools to help make a difference in the future of healthcare Ellen Odai, MHA 2011 Quality Improvement Coordinator, The Ottawa Hospital Winner of the 2012 Robert Wood Johnson Award

Faculty Excellence The Telfer MHA is led by a dedicated and experienced faculty composed of many of Canada s leading health management experts and researchers with funded research projects. Highly respected in their fields, Telfer MHA professors work with small groups of students to provide you with individual attention, an excellent balance between theoretical and practical instruction, and penetrating insights into current and emerging issues in modern healthcare. Here are just three elite academics teaching Telfer MHA students: A professor with insight Doug Angus is a health economist and an expert in healthcare reform, strategic management, health policy and the cost analysis and economic evaluation of health programs. Prof. Angus provides students with trenchant observations on the range of complex issues that face today s health managers. A professor who understands change Samia Chreim is a management specialist renowned for her study of the impact of mergers and acquisitions on organizational and employee identities. Dr. Chreim shares with students her research findings on the dynamics of institutional transformation in healthcare settings. A professor who understands teamwork Modern healthcare is team care. No one has a firmer grasp of this truth than Dr. Craig Kuziemsky. An assistant professor at the Telfer School and director of the Telfer School s Master of Science in Health Systems program, Dr. Kuziemsky was recently awarded a substantial research grant to examine how these teams work. To be more precise, his research will enable him to develop a novel methodological approach for integrating the diverse information flows and work processes of interdisciplinary teams. For Dr. Kuziemsky s research goes to the very heart of how today s health services are delivered by several members of multiple professional groups who make complex decisions based on different levels of knowledge while they work at different locations. FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS The Telfer School provides you with several ways to finance your studies, such as admission scholarships, excellence awards, a student credit line and teaching assistantships.
