2 Course Content Description The Online MBA is for people who want the flexibility to study fully online or with some contact time at Durham. You will have access to all modules through our state-of-the-art virtual learning environment. Designed to be manageable alongside full-time employment, you will have the opportunity to gain the same critical skills and knowledge as our full-time students, but be able to apply what you have learned directly to the organisation that you work for. Our Online MBA offers excellent diversity and global spread; giving you the opportunity to network virtually with people from across the world. Online MBA: in detail Structured around a three year study calendar, you can combine online and residential modules within your personal programme of study, following our innovative blended-learning pathway. Alternatively you can opt for 100% online learning. Whichever route you choose, our comprehensive induction will equip you with an essential toolkit of study skills to help you prepare for your MBA. Our virtual learning environment is at the heart of your Online MBA experience. Through this you will receive online lectures, podcasts and webinars, as well as participating in a range of e-learning activities, discussion boards and virtual group work. There is a virtual campus, complete with powerful social networking tools to keep you in touch with your fellow students wherever they are in the world. This virtual campus is supported with an annual Summer School held here in Durham, offering a range of blocktaught credit-bearing modules that bring a valuable classroom dimension to your Online MBA study experience. You can also study core modules at Durham in April and October each year and have the option to study residential modules overseas, in locations which in the past have included Frankfurt and San Francisco. Electives provide you with an opportunity to enhance and deepen knowledge and skills in areas of particular interest to you, and that are relevant to your future career. You can opt for a broad-based MBA portfolio, or tailor your degree toward a particular specialism. Modules typically offered in previous years have included: Corporate Finance Delivering Service Excellence Entrepreneurship Financial Risk Management Global Strategic Management Project Management Small Business Management Social Media Strategies Strategic Supply Chain Management Sustainability, Ethics and Change Sustaining Change in Organisations. Dissertation or business project The programme culminates in a 15,000-word dissertation on a business topic chosen by you. This is an independent project, allowing you to develop your skills in analysis, interpretation and the presentation of information, observation and ideas. Summer School The Online MBA Summer School brings together students from around the world to provide support and inspiration whatever your module interests. The optional Summer School gives you the opportunity to attend a number of different 3-day modules over two weeks in July, including a rich menu of development workshops as well as the most popular electives. Hosted by the Business School, in the beautiful city of Durham, the Summer School also includes stimulatingspeakerevents, a variety of social events, and a truly unique opportunity to taste the Durham experience. 4 Admissions Process Subject requirements, level and grade A minimum of three (preferably five) years' relevant work experience since graduation of a managerial nature. An Upper Second Class Bachelor Degree or international equivalent. This course includes online activities, so you will also need a computer with internet access. Almost all activities will be possible from a modern desktop or laptop computer (purchased since 2010). All resources will be accessible from a moderate broadband connection (0.5Mbps) but a greater bandwidth (up to 8Mbps) will provide a better experience for some resources and events. You will need: A web browser (Resources are tested on the latest available versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome) The ability to open and edit Microsoft Office documents (e.g. Microsoft Office, OpenOffice or access to Googledocs) Flash player JAVA Ability to open.pdf documents (e.g. Adobe Reader) A headset or headphones and microphone To participate fully in some online events students should have a webcam and to access some tools and resources you may need the ability to install software.
