FOUNDATION APPRENTICESHIP: SOCIAL SERVICES AND HEALTHCARE An exciting, brand new qualification for senior school pupils which equips students for the workplace and an industry recognised qualification. Attendance Mode / Duration Borders College, Scottish Borders Campus, Galashiels Duration 2 x years Day TBC Year 1 August 2016 to June 2017 Attend Borders College 1 x day per week January 2017 to June 2017 Attend workplace experience of between 100 140 hours Year 2 August 2017 until June 2018 Attend college to take part in SVQ 2 tutorials. Complete 370 hours workplace experience as part of the SVQ 2 learning and assessment process The work placement aspect of the course is intended to provide a practical understanding of working in the health and social care sector. It is designed to enable students to understand the features of working in a relevant setting and to build skills and competency to work with a range of clients, patients and service users as part of a team of other professionals. It may be that you will be expected to attend outwith the school timetable, e.g. evenings, weekends and school holidays. 3
Benefits of studying the Foundation Apprenticeship Social Services and Healthcare The Foundation Apprenticeship programme in Social Services and Healthcare is designed to meet the needs of employers both locally and nationally. Employers highly value the employability skills developed through similar courses (such as NPA and SVQ programmes) as they equip learners with the skills and knowledge for the realities of the workplace. The completion of this course will demonstrate to employers that you have the vocational skills and the ability to succeed in the health and social care sector. You would have the opportunity to experience further education level study in health and social care that is not available in schools. This can give you an advantage when progressing to college, university or applying for an apprenticeship and will add value to your C.V. or course application personal statement. Course Summary The course incorporates NPA (National Progression Award) Social Services and Healthcare and SVQ Social Services and Healthcare. The Foundation Apprenticeship is made up of 5 x units of study. It is a nationally recognised qualification which provides students with an understanding of the values and principles which underpin health and social care. The course will prepare students for entry into employment and develop the skills appropriate for working in care settings and provide opportunities for progression to NQ, HNC or degree level studies. The fundamental principles of health and social care will be developed along with the knowledge, theory and practice to equip candidates to work effectively in a range of work settings. Year 1 NPA Social Services and Healthcare (5 x SQA units and SCQF Level 6, 24 SCQF credits) Communication in Care Relationships Human Development and Social Influences in Social Sciences Safe Practice and Well-Being in Social Services Safeguarding People Social Services in Scotland Year 2 SVQ 2 Social Services and Healthcare Assessed workplace experience to meet VQ requirements 4
Progression On satisfactory completion of the Foundation Apprenticeship the pupils would be eligible to enter employment with SSSC registration as a support worker. It would also provide a solid basis for progression onto the Modern Apprenticeship in SVQ 3 Social Services and Healthcare at SCQF Level 7 which is designed to qualify individuals as a senior support worker and enable them to obtain employment in a range of services and settings across the care sector. Successful completion of units within this course can lead to further education entry for the Higher Health, Higher Social Care, HNC Social Care and HNC Care and Administrative Practice (Biology at a minimum National 5 is also required). Career Paths The successful completion of this award will allow the candidate to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) at support worker level typical roles include work with lots of different people in different settings such as: Older people Children and young people Carers of people who use services Children and adults with physical and / or learning disabilities People with mental health problems People with addiction issues Homeless people Refugees and asylum seekers People with HIV/AIDS or long term illness 5
Entry Requirements School verified prediction that the pupil is on track to achieve at least 4 x National 5 qualifications to include English and preferably Mathematics and/ or a Science Successful performance at interview (verbal and written) Positive behaviour and attendance report from school Clear Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme record required. How to Apply for courses delivered in College: Borders College send schools Application Packs to complete. Pupils apply through their schools via the Pastoral staff. Completed Application, Reference and Medical Information forms along with pupil and Parental Agreement forms should be returned to the pupil s Pastoral Teacher. These are forwarded on to Borders College. Pupils who apply are invited to attend an Information/Interview session at Borders College.
