4 About The RHN and our services About the (RHN) is a national medical charity, independent from the NHS, which works to rebuild the lives of adults affected by severe neurological disability through specialist long term care and rehabilitation. Founded almost 160 years ago, the RHN finds ability in disability and seeks to advance the science of care through its research and education, helping to achieve the best possible quality of life for everyone living with neurological disability. Message from the Chief Executive I am delighted to introduce the 2013 brochure to promote education and training activities at the RHN. As a leading centre for the rehabilitation and longer term care of those with severe disabilities due to neurological impairments, we are keen to share our knowledge with other specialists in the field as well as inform those who are seeking to develop their skills. The events in this programme are designed to achieve both of those objectives with the single aim of improving the quality of life for people affected by neurological disability. Conferences 5 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE - Music Therapy Advances in Neuro-disability: Innovations in research and practice Friday 7 Saturday 8 June 2013 Early bird rate (registration before 1 April 2012): 250 Standard rate: 300, Students: 200 (limited places available) This conference offers delegates an opportunity to share knowledge and information on the therapeutic applications of music for those with neuro-disability through acquired or neurodegenerative conditions. Presentations will focus on evidence based research and practice in this exciting field. Professionals from the fields of music therapy, music in health, music neuroscience, music psychology and music technology will present under the following themes: Research Current research projects, research methodology, systematic reviews or the development of theory with relevance to the field of music therapy and neuro-disability Practice - Focussing on music therapy and music in health practice for people with neuro-degenerative conditions, stroke and brain injuries, including the development of new techniques, theory and case studies. Submissions from non-music therapy backgrounds with relevance to clinical work in this field are welcomed. 6 Conferences Doing the impossible: Meeting the challenge of complex neurorehabilitation Wednesday 25 Thursday 26 September 2013 Royal Over-Seas League Over-Seas House, Park Place, St James s Street London, SW1A 1LR Early bird (registration before 14 June 2013): 250 Standard rate: 275 The world of neurorehabilitation is changing and we are all finding ourselves working with ever more complex situations and seemingly more disabled patients and their families. Increasingly it seems that the expectations of those we work for and with are growing. So how do we meet this challenge? This exciting two-day conference brings together experts in the field of complex neurorehabilitation with an emphasis on how best to deliver services to this challenging group. The conference will focus on methods and techniques of assessment and rehabilitation with patients, whether the measures we use to demonstrate our outcomes are fit for purpose and how we can best support families managing a catastrophic brain injury. The need for interdisciplinary working in this field is reflected in the multidisciplinary speakers and in the emphasis on working together. The conference is split over two days and there will be symposia on assessment, including complex capacity assessments, rehabilitation, outcomes and working with families. Delegates will leave this event with a new confidence in the assessment and delivery of rehabilitation to this very complex group of patients and the support they can offer to their families. Specialist Training Courses 7 Managing behaviours that challenge in brain injured individuals: The positive behaviour support approach s Tuesday 29 January / Thursday 9 May / Friday 13 September 2013 70 This one day course is open to anyone working with individuals affected by brain injury who may wish to increase their skills and knowledge of managing behaviours that challenge. It offers a theoretical and practical introduction to the positive behaviour support approach, which is highly effective and rewarding for those clinicians applying the methods in a range of settings. By the end of the course attendees will: Have an understanding of the possible causes of challenging behaviour after a brain injury. Be able to describe the possible functions of challenging behaviour - Why is it happening and what is it telling us? Have an understanding of the development of both pro-active (preventative) and reactive strategies. Be able to appropriately select and use a range of verbal and non-verbal strategies to prevent or respond to challenging behaviours. Be able to identify methods that can be incorporated into the client s environment that can lead to the reduction of the incidence of challenging behaviour. Be proficient in the completion of documentation of challenging behaviour (e.g. ABC s) and understand the purpose of collecting data. Have an understanding of how debriefing and regular staff support mechanisms may help teams working with people with behaviours that challenge. Specialist Training Courses 9 The Assessment and Management of Communication in Complex Brain Injury and Neuro-disability Thursday 14 March 2013 120 This course is aimed at speech and language therapists with some neurological experience. Learning objectives are: To provide an overview of complex brain injury and neuro-disability including disorders of consciousness, challenging behaviour, locked in syndrome and Huntington s disease. To consider the principles and practicalities when assessing the communication needs of these client groups. To gain increased knowledge of therapy approaches including the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and Facial Oral Tract Therapy. 10 Specialist Training Courses Overview of the Principles of Assessment & Management of Patients with Disorders of Consciousness and Introduction to SMART Monday 22 April 2013 120 The SMART (Sensory Modality And Rehabilitation Technique), is a standardised assessment specially designed for low awareness state patients. The SMART was recommended as the assessment of choice to detect awareness by The Royal College of Physicians (2003). The course is open to experienced clinicians, scientists and physicians to provide an overview of disorders of consciousness and also to any delegate who meets the SMART person specification who requires further information pertaining to low awareness states, SMART and may be considering attending the full five day course in the future. Specialist Training Courses 11 SMART Assessor Training Monday 22 Friday 26 April 2013 Early bird rate (registration before January 20 2013) 750 Standard rate 785 The SMART (Sensory Modality & Rehabilitation Technique) is a standardised assessment specially designed for the low awareness states. The SMART was recommended as the assessment of choice to detect awareness by The Royal College of Physicians (2003). More recently, the judge in a ground breaking test case stipulated that SMART must always be used for cases for withdrawal of nutrition and hydration. The full five day course is designed for senior neurological clinicians (AHP s, clinical psychologists, nurses, doctors) to gain their accreditation as SMART assessors. This intensive course will enable the delegates to develop both the skills and knowledge in SMART assessment and treatment planning through tutorials, formative assessment and practical sessions. Following completion of the course the delegates will be required to complete one to three SMART assessments (dependent on the accreditation pathway selected) to complete the SMART accreditation process. Re-accreditation is required after a four year period. SMART assessors share common values and are encouraged to network and share ideas on research, care pathways and the management and treatment of this unique patient group. 12 Specialist Training Courses An Introduction to Thermoplastic Splinting of the Upper Limb in Neurological Conditions Tuesday 21 Thursday 23 May 2013 360 An exciting opportunity to attend an intensive course to learn about the challenges of splinting abnormal tone with complex pathologies such as acquired brain injury and low awareness states. The course includes theory and practical sessions with all materials provided. This course is aimed at clinicians, who have some basic experience of working with thermoplastic materials, wishing to gain further handling skills and understanding of splinting the neurologically impaired upper limb. Specialist Training Courses 13 Foundation Degree in Clinical Technology September 2013, two years, one day per week (includes work-based learning) London South Bank University On application This foundation degree was developed, as part of an RHN initiative, to support technical and support staff working within rehabilitation settings such as special seating, prosthetics, and orthotics. The programme of study is formulated to broaden, deepen and extend the experience gained in the workplace. The aims of the course are: To prepare students for careers in the design and fabrication of special seating (bespoke wheelchairs), prosthetics and orthotics. To provide knowledge and understanding of the relationships between special seating, orthotics and prosthetics and engineering design and manufacture. Specialist Training Courses 15 An Introduction to Casting in Neurology Tuesday 12 Thursday 14 November 2013 370 This three day course offers a theoretical and practical introduction to casting complex neurological patients. It is primarily focused on the use of soft and scotch cast materials, and will provide an overview of casting techniques and clinical reasoning in splinting. There will be a large practical element with all materials provided to enable learning to be directly applied to practice. Splints covered will include elbow, wrist & hand, back slab, knee and ankle. Training Brought To You 19 Although the majority of the training we offer is held at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, it is possible for some specialist training courses to be organised at alternative venues. For example, SMART Assessor Training has recently been held at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne, Switzerland and at Pattison s Academy for Comprehensive Learning, South Carolina, USA. It provides assessments for communication aids, computer access, environmental control and powered wheelchair controls for inpatients and people living with neurological disabilities in the community. Compass can provide training in this technology for equipment users, relatives and professionals in rehabilitation, either on a one-to-one basis or for groups. Training can cover assessment methods, technical skills or any requirement related to electronic assistive technology provision. It can be provided at our premises in Putney or in the community.
